P: azerty keyboard shortcut for \ (backslash- show and hide overlay mask) - make it assignable

I am having an issue with displaying layer overlay, as I am working on a WIN10, PS CC machine, but I am based in Belgium (and using azerty keyboard) and therefor, I cannot reach the \ shortcut.  For me, that is ALT GR+<, which PS does not recognize.  It is driving me crazy! I have read articles and understand the menu shortcut is hidden (that is why I have just spent the last hour searching for it in vain, before I found this article).

I have also had to change "change brush size" in order to use my wacom intuos pro tablet some years ago (from "[" or "{" and "]" or "}" to "(" and ")". Does someone know how I can display the mask overlay (in ruby red, as Adobe calls it) for my machine?  Reading the above, I don't fancy changing my keyboard just for PS and having to change it afterwards every time, as I often switch between browsing, emails, PS and LR.

My question is thus : Make the backslash key for showing/hiding the mask overlay assignable to another key in Photoshop.

Hello, since discovering this thread I've been building a plugin that can solve this issue of making certain keys and shortcuts available to users with a non- American keyboard.

You can check out the recently released beta version of the plugin for Windows PC in this video.

I'm looking for people to test it and provide feedback that will guide the development of the plugin. Learn more about the plugin here and download it

Hello, is there any progress in the original issue, @CShubert or  @David Mohr  ?

Hello, keyboard shortcuts in photoshop on macbook m1pro periodically work incorrectly. The virtual keyboard shows that the combination is correct, but in reality, command + z works instead of saving option+command+S

It's confusing

Hi @Тарас24429919smgr, curious if you have tried any fixes shown here:

Thank you,

As said in the title, the keyboard shortcut tilda (`) for the brush doesn't work on International Keyboards (QWERTY), as the tilda key is a dead key on the International version of the QWERTY.

Dead key makes that when pressing it, Windows awaits for the next input to complete the entry, therfore making the shortcut non usable.

@dmohr   Any news on this? Would really appreciate some help. No workaround for azerty keyboard users. Can't program my Wacom either 😞

Same problems here, many shortcuts are not available to non qwerty keyboard users, when working with the english version of Photoshop. Hardcoding keyboard shortcuts sound like a poor design decision, maybe worth a rewrite ?

This is one of many such issues that localized users are facing.

Moreso, AZERTY kb users can't change brush or layer opacity with the top row of the keyboard, can't target a channel with CMD+numbers, can't target the layer mask with CMD+\ , can't select the next or previous layer via KBSC, making actions writing very difficult...

Plus the countless issues in the KBSC documentation.

Plus the fact that many "menuless" items are therefore not available in the KBSC editor, makes the experience terrible for localized advanced users.

I'm gonna write a medium post, as the list is simply too long, and it might help you fight our case to the program managers.

"Interesting", that after years, Adobe still doesn't seem to care about users with non-american keyboards... Just like many other things lately: Seems they try really hard to lose market position #1.

Remapping the key in windows isnt the kind of fix i'm after, as i use the key for multiple other program and whilst im working it suddenly changes my brush to clear. I just want to change it in Adobe Photoshop.
