P: Please Provide Support for the WebP Image format

Dear Photoshop Team (as well as the Illustrator and Edge Tools Team):

The format improves upon .jpeg and .png use cases today while at the same time providing 2x-3x smaller file sizes at the same, comparable quality settings.

According to the image specificaitons, "WebP supports lossless transparency (also known as alpha channel) with just 22% additional bytes. Transparency is also supported with lossy compression and typically provides 3x smaller file sizes compared to PNG when lossy compression is acceptable for the red/green/blue color channels" (https://developers.google.com/speed/w...).

Being able to used on the latest Android devices an the latest versions of Chrome and Opera (I know they both use Blink, and thus it isn't a surprise that both support it already), according to caniuse.com, it is sort of reasonable to consider I think.

        WebP support is available in the Photoshop (Beta). Instructions to install.

            WordPress, which powers 40% of all websites on the Internet, added core support for WebP in release 5.8 today:

            "Adding support for WebP

            WebP is a modern image format that provides improved lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. WebP images are around 30% smaller on average than their JPEG or PNG equivalents, resulting in sites that are faster and use less bandwidth."

            Look, I dislike Google as much as the next person, but please Adobe, don't tell us to use a third party work around that breaks with every other update. It's clear this format is going to have (Already has) a more useful lifespan than jpeg2000 ever did.

              The continued lack of official WEBP support in Photoshop is unacceptable

              WEBP is highly efficient, delivering smaller filesizes for better quality than JPEG, all modern browsers support WEBP (including Safari) and as a result it's rapidly becoming the standard format for images on the web, replacing both JPEG and PNG.

              Open source code for encoding and decoding of WEBP is easily found at https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/download

              So there's no excuse really...

              Adobe please give us the native tools we need to create content for the modern web!

              Heads-up: So it looks like WordPress is about to add native support for WebP....

               

              In the #core dev chat last week, Mike Schroder said:

               

              I think things are getting pretty close for an initial commit for WebP support, so any testing and feedback on it, and the related filter for output, would be appreciated:

              This should drive further interest and need for WebP.  I've been using the free WebPShop plugin and it's decent, but of course it would be great to have native Photoshop support.

              i’ve been following this thread for literally years, ever incredulous to see the absolute lack of response from Adobe, particularly the “chief computer scientist“, who shall remain nameless but is still an annoying, pedantic, obnoxious piece of crap.

              I ended up retiring from graphic arts a couple of years ago and I’m sad to see this is still a hassle.

              piss on Adobe. They got our $$, that’s all they care about.
