"Edit Workspaces" doesn't do anything

Premiere 24.4.1

What is the "edit workspaces" feature for, if not to control what workspaces appear in the Workspaces menu item? But it literally does nothing in the menus. Despite what it promises, you can't reorder the menu items and "do not show" doesn't make them not show. You can't even delete workspaces.

Someone pointed out in another post that edit workspaces does change things in the menu that's accessible from the application frame. But what if you're like me and the first thing you do when you start up premiere is hide the application frame? This is a feature omission that feels more like a bug.

Totally agree with OP - this is completely bonkers and terrible convoluted UX. When you go to a Menu about Workspaces and then click "Edit" you've naturally assume that YOU'RE EDITING THE LIST YOU'RE LOOKING AT!
Editing menu items like this has been around in other (Adobe) programs for decades so, yes, that would be the DEFAULT assumption. Ive used Premiere Pro for 15 years and NEVER clicked on the Workspaces button before today.
I only use shortcuts and menus.
What makes it even worse is that the text in the Edit dialoge box doesn't say that youre actually making UI changes somewhere else entirely in the Program, further confirming the users belief that you're modifying the menu.
Pls stop making excuses for trivially bad design decisions and poor communication. This is UX for dummies.

Thanks @Kevin-Monahan, I don't think hiding the menu option is as necessary for me as long as I can use keyboard shortcuts for my custom workspaces. Appreciate the help!

Hello @veekastproduction,

Please see the correct answer. The Edit Workspaces function only works in the UI and not on the main menu. Read the response for a full explanation. Upvote if you'd like to see a change in how the function behaves.

As to your second feature request, see the following featured post: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/assigning-keyboard-shortcuts-for-premiere-workspaces/m-p/9668017/thread-id/130972

I hope the advice helps.

Thanks,
Kevin

Premiere Version: Premiere Pro 24.4.1

Device: M2 Macbook Pro running on Ventura Version 13.4.1

I use custom workspaces in Premiere and I'd like to display only those in the workspace menu, but whenever I go to Edit Workspaces and drag certain ones into the "Do Not Show" section they do not update in the menu. Tried opening a new project and restarting Premiere but the menu never changes. Has anyone had this issue or been able to hide the workspace options they don't use?

I'd also like to be able to add keyboard shortcuts for my custom workspaces but the only options displayed in the Keyboard Shortcuts are just labeled "Workspace 1-9" with no way of adding shortcuts for any custom layouts.

Moved to the Ideas forum. Would you like to edit the title to something similar to your request so others can upvote it? I can also do that if you like.

Thanks,

Kevin

What 'real estate' are you guys saving? AFAIK it's either a blank space or you can have 1 or a few workspace tabs displayed there. But if you turn those tabs off, there is no screen real estate saving, it's just an empty space you can do nothing with.

?

Did you find a way to use that space? 🙂

Cmd-backslash hides the bar, giving you an extra half inch of whatever

OK, I got it now. I agree, the locked on Home button / Import Edit Export pane that goes all the way across the screen, and can or cannot display some workspaces. It's strange because it something new-ish and they made that one pane not removable. So, there is no real-estate savings available with that pane currently. (That's what you are lamenting) 🙂 Thanks very much.

I gathered this screenshot before I realized Neil had this covered. So, here it is anyway...

You can sort your workspaces so that the ones you want will display across the screen.

Reg is right, that's just for use in the header bar area where the workspaces are listed while working. It's not intended to do anything in the main top menu area.

The Edit Workspaces allows you to re-order and/or hide workspaces that are displayed in both the Workspace icon and how they are displayed when you select the Show Workspace Tabs option. They are not intended for the Workspace file menu.

If you would like that feature to be added, please submit a request.

That seems like a bizarre usability decision, given that "edit workspaces..." is accessed from the very workspace menu that it does nothing to edit. Consider this a feature request!

The menu is designed and intended to show everything.

The only place 'hiding' things is actually useful is where it does work ... in the dropdown from the Workspace controls to the right up top of the app window. There, saving screen space is useful. On the main menu, there's no sense to 'saving screen space'.

So it entirely makes sense.

It really doesn't work if you're talking about the menu Windows > Workspaces and the dropdown with workspaces and keyboard shortcuts for each one.
