Formatting options for uploaded .srt files

When uploading .srt files to Prem Pro, there are no options for specifying the number of lines for captions.

In fact, the formatting is an absolute mess. Because the video I was working on is over 30 mins, there was no way I was going to manually reformat the text in the Text window, so I've ended up doing it all in VEED.IO

It's so annoying that despite all the money I pay in Creative Cloud subs each month, I still have to take out another subscription with another company because Prem Pro isn't fit for purpose when it comes to captioning.

Grrr.

Moan ends.

lol. What is your goal? The relevance is for further suggestions. For example, PR imports very little as format. But it depends on the format.

It was an isolated case tbh but it flagged up the limitations of PP's
caption importing.

I'd made a 30-minute video for a client who then decided they wanted it
captioned. As they were already at the top of their budget, I generated an
srt from the auto-transcript and asked them to edit it, then I'd take the
edited srt and make the captions. Minimal effort on my part and minimal
cost to them. Because Prem Pro insisted on weird formatting like using 4
lines per caption, I ended up uploading the srt to VEED.IO and it threw out
perfectly formatted, animated captions in 5 mins.

@arewenotmen,

From PR, are you burning in? Exporting a sidecar file? Or both?

That's interesting Stan, thanks for commenting.

Must admit I don't know much about the different captioning file formats.

It's just every time I try and do captioning in Prem Pro, I always end up using different software because I find the whole process so frustrating!

Upvoted; I have no objection to more functionality.

But I'm not holding my breath. (I tried but I couldn't even get a good moan! lol.)

I like the free/donationware Subtitle Edit. It has a split line function.

I also agree with the formatting limitations, but PR is using the very basic SRT implementation. Other formats are more functional.

The two feature requests that get me more excited are .vtt export with real formatting and being able to import srt as a transcript with and without PR's transcription timing.

This link is to my summary of the .vtt request:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-ideas/export-captions-as-vtt-webvtt-files/idc-p/14524674#M14021

Import as transcript:

Importing as transcript then allows you to use PR's still evolving rules for length/duration of subtitles.
