FrameMaker

Does anyone have same experience with FrameMaker publishing DITA to PDF taking too long? I compared the time required for publishing the same document with DITA OT. It took around 10 times less than FM 2020. Do we have to simply live with it?

Hi @ all! First of all, I really appreciate the help one can get in this community. I may have only posted two issues so far but I received fast and reliable feedback - So thanks!  Now my question of today:I wrote a script to modify some things in a FrameMaker Document. My next goal would be to kind of "automate the automation". So I thought about if it is possible in any way to use Powershell or CMD to perform the following: 1. Open FrameMaker2. Specify a source of FM-Files (a directory with e.g. 5 .fm files)3. Iterate through the directory and open all the .fm files in FM4. Run a jsx script for ALL of the files5. save all files and close FM I don't know if this would be maybe even possible with just an jsx script to call that from the command line and it performs all the tasks above... Thanks in advance for your help!GreetingsYannick 

After the most recent update, CHM outputs are defaulting to Times New Roman formatting for all paragraph styles (most styles should be in some form of HelveticaNeueLT). Tables are missing all formatting, and are practically incomprehensible. The styles only seem to be corrected by exporting a CSS and adding/editing those styles, then mapping them in the .STS file after importing the new CSS. I feel like I'm missing something obvious - is there not a better way to just use the source Paragraph/Character/Table Styles?

everything was going great saving about every 20 minutes to prevent data loss, and i am geting this error. if i cant find a quick solution i will have to exit the program and load from the last save, which i really dont want to do. Any solutions for this?!

I have a 2020 Book with 18 chapters. The TOC is fine until halfway through Chapter 3 where the page number explodes exponentially! Like it is counting line numbers or something! The page numbering in Chpater 3 is correct. See attached.

Hi, I am using the ExtendScript Toolkit for FrameMaker on Windows 10. The performance is disappointing when I run a script from the Toolkit for development, testing, etc. There is always a delay and Not Responding after the script finishes. Is anyone using any alternative IDEs and are they interactive like ES Toolkit is? If so, any directions on setting things up would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi All,   Requesting a solution for a query that has been discussed earlier, but I am not able to fully understand the replies.   I have a book in FM 2019 with around 100 documents. Each document has a table, whose Table Title should be the same as the Document Title. Does a variable exist that has only the document title without the .fm extension? For example, I have a document called Oil Pump.fm that has a table that should have the same name, but without the .fm extension. I have tried to use <$chaptertitlename> or <$filename> variable but the inserted text is always "Oil Pump.fm" and not the desired "Oil Pump." Is it possible to create a variable that uses the file/document name without adding the .fm extension? If I can't have a variable free of the .fm extension, is there a method of 'Find and Replace' that will replace the "Oil Pump.fm" text in the Table Title with just "Oil Pump"?   Thanks in advance for your help.   Regards Apurva

I am looking to build an "office template pool" for FrameMaker and want to ensure that all of our writers are using the same templates for our document creation. I was wondering if there was a way to change the default template location of FrameMaker so that I can add the templates into a share so that when a writer creates a new document they are using the most current template?

We want to put our document title in the footer. I did it by editing the FM template to include an empty DocTitle variable, and importing a DocTitle variable from another file into the book after map-to-book. This works well. But is there a way to accomplish something similar that doesn't require post-processing after map-to-book? Currently, the only mention of the document title is in the title attribute of the map element in the ditamap file. Any suggestions on how to automatically pull the document title from the map attribute into the structured FM template for footer use? If it requires much coding, it may be easier to continue the manual import. But I wanted to check in case there's a simple solution. Any thoughts? Thanks, Larry

When I double-click the executable, FrameMaker 8 doesn't open. The exe shows in Task Manager as a Background Process. No errors during the install. This works on a separate laptop running Windows 10, but not my new one that is running Windows 10. Any suggestions?Thanks.

About a year ago when I started using FrameMaker I created an "Image Table" that was 1 Column and 1 Row to insert illustrations in line with a document. When I set it up I set it to have a table title below the table and that served as a caption box the title is automatically populated with Figure: <$chapnum>-<figure number> i.e. Figure: 1-1. Well, we updated the numbering for the figures and I created a new paragraph style with the new formula but can't remember for the life of me figure out how to insert the table with the title # already in the title box. Any tips for this so I don't have to go through 133 images and change each one manually and I can just update the style and have them re-number automatically?

I removed the word Chapter from the title.0 paragraph format and I added a numbering scheme to the title.1 paragraph format (to match the model used in my document).I edited ditafm-output.ini to look like this:I can get the layout I'm looking for, but I have two problems.First, my title.0 entries go from 1, 2, 3 on to 2, 2, 2 for the rest of the book.Second, my title.1 entries all use 1 for the chapter number.So I get something that looks like this:Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks,Wanda

Hi I'm using FM2017 Ditaxml 1.2 to create a new document. I can't figure out how to make certain chapters into appendices. I save the ditamap as Book 2017 w/ FM components... but still can't seem to figure out how to change some chapters to an appendix. ThanksRishi

I have some bulleted cross-ref lists where the bullets turn blue and are underlined like the text. I have other bulleted cross-ref lists in the same document where the bullets are black and are not underlined. Both have exactly the same settings in paragraph and character designer. How do I change the blue underlined bullets. to black without underlining? I've tried everything...no luck. Thanks.

Is there any way to break a ConRef link in Frame 2020? I have two similar documents, one has a number of ConRef’s to the other. It is creating a formatting nightmare. Can the link be broken so content becomes editable? Kind of like what can be done with text insets.

Adobe FrameMaker 2019Windows Server 2019 Anytime I update a FrameMaker book, I get the following in the Book Error Log:"Printer setting for color "X" is inconsistent." Is there a way to fix this? Not sure if these warnings slow the update down.Thanks!

Dear friends,FM-15: With an ExtendScript I get a complete list of all marker types - and discovered two types I have never noticed: End Marker Number Utility and Start Marker Number Utility.I have not found in Help what they are used for.→ Does anyone of You know what they are intended for?I only recently discovered the menu item Insert > Publish Markers with a number of marker types not listed in the Insert Marker dialogue. About these there is ample information in Help.

I have cross-refs I'm trying to reformat in Framemaker 2015 from 12pt ariel to 10pt calibre. No problem with the change at first. But once I save and reopen, they always revert back to the original setting. No matter what I try it keeps doing the same thing. Why won't these changes stick? Thanks. 

in a large framemaker document i am makin. I removed the auto flow tag but the pages are still connected. its messing with the whole flow of document and changing table placement amonst other things. This was a early product manual. I removed the flow tag on each individual page. but pages still appear to be connected..Any quick way to fix this. i construct my documents now in dissconncted pages because the large variety of different outlines. i am not yet comformtable using master pages in a dissconnected page setting..How can i assure these pages are disconnected on this document.
