Using FrameMaker 10 at work, our books keep getting their bookmarks shuffled around when we convert to PDF. Each chapter's headings get bumped into the previous chapter, and the first chapter's headings just get dumped into level 1 with the chapter titles. What our chapters containResulting PDF bookmarksChapter 1Ch1, Heading 1Ch1, Heading 2Chapter 2Ch2, Heading 1Ch2, Heading 2Chapter 3Ch3, Heading 1Ch3, Heading 2Ch1, Heading 1Ch1, Heading 2Chapter 1Ch2, Heading 1Ch2, Heading 2Chapter 2Ch3, Heading 1Ch3, Heading 2Chapter 3I did some searching, and the above issue is usually due to there being separate text flows for the chapter title and the body text. This is true. Our chapter template has a left & right page, and a title page. The title page just has a "Chapter Title" text flow.I've attempted to fix this, but immediately ran into a new problem. If I attempt to connect the Chapter Title text frame to the body text frame on either the left or right page, I get the following error mes
Hi Everyone. I am recursively processing an XML file using ExtendScript. I have a "level" variable so I can keep track of how deep I am in the structure. I want to detect when the level changes in either direction. I am having trouble figuring out how to use a "prevLevel" variable to keep track of the current level so I can see if it has changed. It seems to work when the level increases, but not when it decreases. Any help would be appreciated. Here is my script. It will prompt you for an XML file, which I will also post. main (); function main () { var xmlFile, xml; // Prompt the user for the XML file. xmlFile = File.openDialog ("Please select an xml file:","XML:*xml", false); if (xmlFile === null) { return; // User cancelled the XML dialog box. } xml = loadXmlFile (xmlFile);
(FM12 on Win7)Doh! I just posted a similar question in the CMS forum, but the answer to it is probably here instead.BackstoryMy new manager has asked me to consider SVN with unstructured FM.I wonder how to manage SVN merge conflicts among FM's binary (.fm) files? As a potential source of SVN-indicated change, when I update a .book, does FM always update every ID number of markers that have them? For example, the numbers in <MText and <XRefSrcText ?If yes, then presumably every book update would update every file in the book that has such a marker, including every inset that has such a marker, indicating lots of "change" that isn't really change that my authors need to manage.Thoughts? Suggestions?
I am trying to open a FrameMaker 5.5 document using scripting and convert it to XML. I can open the files in the interactive version, but when I try to open them in FrameMaker 2015 using ExtendScript it just won't open. No return parameter errors. Just says not valid document. Is there a parameter I can set in the open parameters to allow this? Anyone have an example of how to do this?Paul V
One of my coworkers got FM12. The rest of us have 11 but our IT department said they couldn't get a new license for 11, so he got 12. I supposed we'll all upgrade at some point, but...I've been trying to configure his copy to our output. I won't get into the trouble I've been having with that just yet; first, I hope someone can help me with this. While I was trying to get his output to work correctly, I accidentally overwrote his copy of ditafm.ini without backing up the original (I know...), and now I'm having a whole new set of problems. I need to start fresh, but, as you can see, I messed up.Could someone in this forum please give me a copy of the default ditafm.ini (not ditafm-output.ini) for FrameMaker 12, or even just post the text of the file here so I can copy it back in?I promise I'll be more careful in the future....Thanks in advance.
In the structured view, FrameMaker 12 has a "nice" feature that shows an attribute pop-up dialog when the pointer is over an element and the Ctrl key is pressed. This is especially handy for changing attribute values on the fly. However, I put "nice" in quotes because it's actually more annoying than useful in its current implementation. Right now, if the pointer is over any element tag, the pop-up appears immediately when the Ctrl key is pressed. If you are trying to use some key sequence, like Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Shift-H, etc., the dialog blocks that action. This makes it very difficult to use Ctrl-X/Ctrl-V to rearrange elements around, because the dialog is constantly blocking the actions. I end up having to juggle the mouse and the keyboard to move the pointer off elements as I select them, then use hotkeys. I'm amazed this one made it through whatever usability testing was performed for FrameMaker 12!Can you please find an implementation that allows Ctrl-key sequences to still work when t
Hi,does anybody know a script that resizes all images in a document (e.g. to a given dpi)?It would be even better if the resizing action could be confined to images in anchored frames that are placed in certain paragraph formats, but anything would help.
(FM12 on Win7x64)Anyone else noticing unexpected overrides on object styles?Object styles "govern" each text frame on my master pages. After content editing on Body pages for several days, I returned to the master pages and noticed overrides on every text frame that has an object style applied.Any ideas?Related question: how do I clear an object style from an object, so the object properties do not change and the style is not applied to the object?Best regards,
Have just tried adding the degree symbol to the Symbols menu. The label appeared but when I tried to use it 'x' was inserted instead of the degree symbol. Suspect the definition (<Definition \xB0>) is incorrect. Have tried changing the cmds definition to something that does work (plusminus <Definition \xB1>) and all seems okay with that.I am using FM9.0p196 on Windows 7.Tried searching the forum for this topic but have been having trouble getting any results for even the simplest search criteria!CheersStu
I have the Technical Communications program. Is there a new release for Captivate and RoboHelp? Is there a free upgrade?
Does anyone know where the setting is to remove the page number that appears after the Appendix heading in the TOC?? As shown below, I'd like not to have the page number generated when the TOC is created. Thank you!
Hi all,I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to add a prefix every time there's a line break within a certain element. I'm importing XML into FM with a structure that looks something like this:<note> <elem1>Some text here. <elem2>Some text here;that contains a line break. <elem3>More text here.</note>I have specified in the read/write rules that each sub-element should preserve line breaks. I have also specified in the EDD that each sub-element should have the prefix "-".So when importing into FM, the text currently looks like this:Notes:- Some text here.- Some text here;that contains a line break.- More text here. However, what I'd like it to look like is this...Notes:- Some text here.- Some text here;- that contains a line break.- More text here.Does anyone know if this is possible to accomplish within FM? Maybe by using the read/write rules? I'm pretty new to FM so any help is gr
I have a book with 9 chapters. In each chapter are numbered headings (1; 1.1; 1.2; 2; 2.1; 2.1.1; etc). I cannot get the numbers to incremment from one chapter to the next. In every chapter, they begin again with 1. I've tried to change it in chapter-level Numbering Properties and the book-level Number Properties, and they still refuse to incremment. Page numbers will incremment across chapters though - that one worked. What am I missing?
How do I install Acrobat Distiller Version 5.05 or higher
I have a subscription to FrameMaker 12. It was installed on my home and work computer. I no longer work for this employer and I uninstalled the program from my work computer. Is there any way my former employer can still access the program?

FrameMaker v11 crashes when scrolling within a file using a mouse wheel or Lenovo trackpoint. I have encountered this problem in multiple versions of FrameMaker. It does not crash if I use the scrollbar within the window. Is this just a known problem that has never been corrected, or is there a fix?
I have manuals I create that are based on other manuals and so I often copy whole folders, rename files and start there. This creates a problem with extra graphics in my Linked graphics folder when I'm done with a book. There are many that I've taken out of the book but they remain in the folder. When it comes to getting translations made I end up having a huge graphics folder to send along and I like to delete all the unused graphics. Is there a way to create a list of the graphics actually in the manual so I can quickly find them in my graphics folder and delete them? Thanks for any insights.Jon
Sorry, sometimes ago I asked something similar, but I can't finde the topic...Anyway: from Version 8, the command "Save as" doesn't work properly, especially saving from a format to another.Until version 7 it worked, now (from version 😎 it seems to work as a "Save a copy".For example, if I have a .mif file, and save it as .fm file, changing only file extension (Goofy.mif --> Goofy.fm), my open file still remains the same .mif file (Goofy.mif), while a .fm copy, called Goofy.fm is saved properly. So, if I want to work on my new file I have to close the mif file, and then reopen the .fm file.It seems a bug to me, because if I save (not export, or save a copy) a file, in any programs, with a different name, I expect that my open file will change name (as it did until version 7 of FM).
I installed the Frame demo version and the UI is tiny. I mean miniscule and unreadable. Is this normal? and how do I change the interface view to a readable size?
Using FM 10, how do I turn a long document (150 pages) into a book?Earle
Hi.I'm creating a Table of Contents in Japanese but my formatting is not coming out as is set in my Reference Page. I've done TOCs in many foreign languages so I'm pretty confident my settings are correct. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Japanese language / font? Does FrameMaker 12 support Hyojuno language? I've tried to fake my way through it by manually changing the font size / weight to what they're supposed to be, but then the font changes to question marks (even when only changing the font size). I've included some pics below. Anyone have any thoughts on what's going on? Thanks. This is what it looks like now with the incorrect formatting in the Head 1s. They need to be the same size as the Head 2, but bold. The leader lines are also missing. Here's a look at the Paragraph Designer for my Reference Page. The Language is set to English because I don't have Hyojungo as an option. And here's my tab stops on my Reference Page that should be creating the leader lines.TIA
Dear Adobe,We are using Adobe FM 11 and 8 in our organization, can you confirm we can use it on the same laptop?or it has to be on separate machine?ThanksJameel
I am creating documents with numbered headings (i.e. 1; 2; 2.1; 2.1.1; 2.1.2; 2.2; etc). I set up the heading numbering system using the Numbering tab in the Paragraph Designer. Whenever I try to insert a numbered list into the document, however, the heading numbers re-sequence after the list, and they do so in no logically discernible order. Has anyone else seen this issue before?
I'm having trouble adding an 11x17 master page. Advice?
