FrameMaker

In Frame 12 all the templates have been updated.I built my book using unstructured templates because I wanted to get a feel for the changes from my last version of Frame (8).I now think I will need to redo the book entirely using the templates from structured Frame. The unstructured Frame template for a book has all master pages in every file in the book. The structured template for Chapter has only master pages: left, right, first. Is there a reason for this? (Should not every file in the book have the same master and reference pages?)Thanks.

I've seen videos with TWO columns for pods & structure view. How do I achieve this?More---Horizontal box on left has the open files in it.On right is one column with nested pods in it. I can separate pods from the nested area, but I cannot figure out how to get two columns of nested pods.Changing the Workspace view doesn't help me.Thanks in advance

Hi AllI am a Newbie. I would like to create a technical document using Framemaker and I have some questions.1. Is there a way to include source code from other source code editors like Sublime Text, Programming Language IDE etc?    Basically, I would like to copy source code listing with color syntax highlighting from a IDE,  "paste" it into Framemakers    and still preserving all the source code fonts, color highlighting alignment etc.Thanks and hope someone can advice me.RegardsAlan

Is there a way to extract the XPath results as separate XML files? I am currently looking to chunk a large xml file based on certain tags. I tried using XSLT, but I understand that FM 12 supports only XML version 1.0 and doesnt help in splitting. I am not familiar with Javascripting too. Is there a script or any easy way that can do this job. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

[Using FM 10] .... I inherited a two-page FM file from a coworker, so I don't know everything about it, and I am also a newbie at this. I was typing and the end of page 2 and it automatically added a page 3 as per normal. From the bottom of page 3 it added page 4, of course. But at the bottom of page 4, new text falls behind the "cutoff line" and does not flow to a new page. Why did it stop flowing to a new page?I guess I could add a disconnected page and use Master Page "Right" or "Left" or whatever, and then connect the two frames, but I'm afraid something else will go wrong.How can I fix it?Thanks, people.

OK, I need to be able to have a linked TOC, and also have destinations created in FM10 that will not be lost when I 1. Save the book as a PDF; then 2. I need the PDF to be as small as possible, but without losing my destinations. Anyone know how to do that??I had been saving as a PDF and then reducing the size of the PDF by printing it as a PDF with a degree of image compression. I write manuals with a LOT of screen captures and line art that needs to be clear. So it is a balancing act between image clarity and PDF size. The PDFs on the web need to be smaller - sure you can undertsand.Anyway, when I print the PDF again, I lose both my destinations and bookmarks.Anyone know of any way to avoid that?

I've used SHIFT+ENTER to force the rest of the heading onto the next line, but it screws up the TOC.Suggestions?

Adobe Frame 12 help says:"You can also use style sheets (.css) to manage the styles in the published output. In this case, you can export the current styles to a .css file. You can then open this file in a text or .css editor (such as Adobe Dreamweaver), make changes to the styles in this file and import the file back.To export and import the style sheet:To export the output styles defined for the current output, click Export . "OK, so where is this?Nothing I can find on the menus provide this option displaying regular Frame or XML view.Also, when I find it, do I need to load the css into Dreamweaver? Shouldn't I be able to use the XML view?

I would like to emulate the "Remove Structure from Flow" in a Script - I have found "FCodes.KBD_REMOVE_STRUCT" but I think that is only used to examine a keystroke in a script.

I can't find any way to make the Body paragraph not take up space!The first cell of my column-wide table gets shifted down by 2pt (the smallest font size I can set for Body).I've tried setting space above and below pgf to negative values and column padding/feathering.Is there any way I can get rid of the Body paragraph or some other workaround to make the cells line up properly?The small dots just above the left cell is the Body paragraph. Note how the left and right cells don't line up...

I have a book with two novellas in it (short stories) with a total of about 35 files. Each story has a cover page with the title which has a paratag called "HB_HeadingBook". I'd like the title of the novella to appear in the header of each page.So far Frame has resisted all of my attempts to do this using running header/footer 2 which I've defined as "<$paratext[HB_HeadingBook]>".How do I put a variable on the master page which updates with the correct title?Thanks.

Hello to those with great FM skills,I am saving a FM file as a PDF. The document has 7 sections with a few sub sections. All is well in the PDF except, the first section in the document is ending up last in the bookmarks sidebar of the PDF. It doesn't matter what I select in the PDF Setup dialog box. I've tried Thread by Column, Thread by Text Frame, and unchecked without success. The FM paragraph tags for each title are the same. It's a one-column doc with a left side head. The section titles begin in the side head and continue into the column. Any suggestions?Thank you very much.Frances

In the new templates provided in Frame 12, why is there no Title paratag?H0_Heading0 appears to be taking the place of Heading1 in earlier versions of Frame. In the "User Guide" template, it is used for Chapter. How does one insert a Heading "above" H0_Heading0, i.e. I want a heading for the Volume?How do I get running Header/Footer variable to get its information from a previous file in the book?Thanks in advance.

Using a Frame 12 template for a book, paratag "#S_NumberSection" has an autonumber format of "<$chapnum>< =0>< =0>". I want to reset $chapnum to zero or 1. (Not all files in the book are properly Chapters and the counters seem to think they are).How do I do this?Since I'm trying to end up with the same master pages, paragraph tags, etc. for all files in the book, I'm assuming that I'll need to create a new Paratag. Right?

In a book, several files have been selected. Then the Volume number is set to "1". When I click "Set" in Numbering Properties, does the book update with only the change to Volume, or is Chapter, Section, Sub-Section, Page, etc. updated as well?Frame 12, by the way.Thanks.

Hi All,Using structured FM 11 on Windows 7.I need a way to round-trip paragraph format tags. I know it is easy to assign them on import with the EDD, but I'm not sure how to save them on export.I was hoping the read/write rules could contain something along the lines of: attribute "paraFormat" is fm property paragraph format tag; I figure it can probably be done with ExtendScript or a custom API, but I would rather avoid these if possible.Thanks!Trevor

dear alli don't know what is wrong with my frame 11. until yesterday i had frame 10, 11 and 12 installed parallel on my win7 x64 machine. all of a sudden the creative cloud thingy came up and prompted me to login, etc. after that frame 10-12 didn't work anymore. i received the cryptic internal errors. happend already couple of times, i then ran the installers again and frame 10 & 12 worked after that. only frame 11 is still not functioning. i can start it, select wether structured or unstructred and that's it. it pops up quickly in the taskmanager but then disappears. latest updates are applied. deleting local maker.ini just brings the dialogue again. no effect after i made a decision. frame 11 refuses to start.i then deleted all frames and cleansed the registry by hand (i know what i am doing!), tried to reinstall just frame 11 - no success.now i start to wonder if my installer is corrupt somehow. can not find frame 11 or TCS4 anywhere to download. it's all gone.any clues or hints

i want to add a cross reference but i get a message saying i can't add one at the document, any ideas why??

Frame XML document content:<bookinfo>     <title>     <edition>     <copyright></bookinfo>As you can see, this doc does not yet have a PrefaceInfo element, although one is allowed by the DTD.  So the obvious solution is to either: 1) add one (wrap the <copyright> element in a <prefaceinfo> element as allowed); or 2) add an "E:Copyright" mapping to the ref page. Hi all! I have been making a book, and have been using our standard master page layout. I now have to change the master page layout of the whole book, and I have made a document that uses the new master page layout. I did the typical make new master page layout, gave it a name, and everything seemed normal. I then went to add it to the existing documents but, my new layout is nowhere to be found. How do I add this new layout? I thought I could just change out the current master page layout for the new one. The only changes are the graphics at the top, and some header and footer changes. Body text stays the same. I'm on FM11 by the way.

Hi all...Minor problem that I've been "working-around" for a long time now, but this AM, it just finally hit me to try to search out a solution.  I'm currently using FM 11 (in Windows 7), but this has been an issue as far back as FM 7.In a Bulleted List-type paragraph style, if I apply a Character Style to it, it seems to be "stuck" with that style -- Attempts to highlight it and set it back to the "Default (Paragraph Symbol) Font" Character Style don't work.  My work around has been to:Highlight the offending text.Select the "Default (Paragraph Symbol) Font" Character Style (even though nothing is applied).Select a new Paragraph Style (any one).Re-select the appropriate Paragraph Style.This resets the Character Style to the Default Font, but it's kind of a pain.Any ideas on why this is the case?Thanks a lot, - Chris

Hi,I've had FM 8 since 2008, and it's always worked fine, but since I upgraded to Windows 8 a couple of months ago, FM has started crashing randomly. It wasn't so frequent at first, and the symptom of the crash made me think it was just slow (it will suddenly say "Not Responding" at the top of the FM application). That can happen with anything, and it usually means that something is temporarily hogging the system or slowing it down for some reason. But in this case, FM never comes back from the not-responding state. If I click on the application, everything goes gray. Eventually I have to exit the program or kill it through the task manager.Here's mybasic info:System: Dell - 64-bit processors (2), 4 GB (3GB usable) RAMOS: Windows 8 Pro, 32-bitFrameMaker: 8.0p266I saw a similar post from 3 years ago, of FM 8 crashing in Win 7.
