New to LRC Big Sur 11.7.8, LRC 12.2.1 I have hundreds of photos in a single folder on my local HDD. Those photos have been imported into Lightroom Classic. In LRC the photos have been edited, assigned keywords, colors, flags, and sorted into collections(and smart collections), etc. I understand the originals on the local HDD are never changed in any way but the edits are applied when the photo is exported.(?) The photos (graphs, charts, tables etc) are to be used in a 10 chapter document. The goal is to have these exports available by chapter in the sequence they would be used in each of the documents (like they are arranged in a collection). What is a useable workflow to accomplish this? Does it mean creating new folders for each chapter and putting the exports there or is there another way (or easier way)?

When I do a select, cut, paste in place, If I have selected more than 1 caption frame they come back exactly as they were before with the numbers still out of sequence. If I select only 1 caption frame cut, paste in place, It always comes back as the highest list number on that page, without regard to it's physical position. (unless there is a setting in the wrong position that I am unaware of) It appears the only way to arrange them in numerical order is to physically move the caption frame into order then cut and paste the content to the correct frame...that could become very tedious for a long document with numerous additions and deletions. As a beginner, I find anchored frames confusing to use, never knowing where the graphic will show up next. It makes a meaningful organization and display of graphics impossible (at least for me). For this material, it is not necessary for the graphic to be adjacent to or move with a specific block of text. hummm....what to do?

Yes that is correct. Headings number correctly.
Paragraph style for captions is shown in previous post above. A different numbered list is used for the Headings. graphics are inserted directly on the page and grouped with the caption text frame. In those cases where they may be inserted within a text frame the graphic is wrapped.

Numbering across multiple stories seemed to work for the numbered heading in each unthreaded frame when adding or removing pages. I have a similiar problem with the captions updating correctly, which I see has been a topic of conversation for several years. When adding or removing captions they don't update to reflect the change. Some post say it is numbered based on the order the text frames holding the caption was created and not it's position/sequence on the page. Some say the only way to correct this is to cut and paste in place in the order you want them to be numbered, which I haven't found to work very well and is not a practical solution for a longer document. Am I understanding this correctly or am I missing something important?

Just Learning ID I have a 2-page document with 2 columns per page. Each column is composed of a non-threaded text frame. At the top of each text frame is a heading style that contains the chapter and sequence number from a numbered list. 1-1 1-2 1-3 1-4 All is well until I insert another page with it's 2 columns and same heading style. Then I get: 1-1 1-2 1-5 1-6 1-3 1-4 I have read it is numbered on what order the text frames were constructed. Is there a way to renumber based on the order the text frame resides in the document rather that the order in which the text frames were inserted in the document? (am I going to have to cut/paste each frame again in the right order?)

Thanks. It will take me some time to work through your reference. This seems like a serious limitation on the content and length of a caption not present in FM.

I am building a table of content. One of the paragraph styles in the TOC is Caption. I want to include only a portion of each caption in the TOC and not the whole caption. How do I do that? I could do this in FM. I am new to ID.

If they show up in story editor and can be edited there, that resolves the issue. “Edits to the markers should be made in the Index panel.” I read where there is an option to “go to marker” in the index panel. That must be where you are suggesting the edit should be made. (Not working on my system right now so will have to try it out when I get back to it). Thanks to you both for your help and suggestions.

The graphic might contain names of persons places or things. It would be nice to mark those so you could find them in the index (or with the index). I understand that you don’t put the marker in(or on) the graphic but if you put multiple markers in the caption, while it may or may not result in overset text, they would be very difficult to edit (or identify them individually) should that become necessary, unless there is a way to just have all the markers in the caption listed so you could edit them. Is there something like that I am missing?

New to ID. I have placed a tiff file in a graphic frame. The graphic contains content that should be indexed. Where do I put the index markers? The graphic frame is grouped with a text frame serving as a caption, which isn’t large enough to contain numerous markers. What do you suggest?

Bullet #2 is where I am trying to get to. I will work with it a while and let you know how it goes. I’m not disappointed to see that Cross References have no part to play here. Thanks Again

Thanks for your responses. The problem was in the concept not the software. I initially thought I would build a complete list of illustrations in the TOC and it would come out under the correct subheading photo, charts etc. as they appeared in the Book....That may be possible, I don’t know, but the real question is why would I need a complete list of illustrations in the TOC when the next doc in the book is List of Illustrations which includes a complete list of illustrations arranged by type, photo, chars etc. I understand how to build the LOI doc using cross references, probably a little more labor intensive, but avoids the duplication inherent in the original plan. I am not sure i understand levels in the TOC setup but I will figure that out. Thanks again.

I have an indesign book. I have constructed a TOC using the ChaptNum, ChaptTitle, ChaptSubTitle and A-Head styles. The TOC generates nicely. In the front matter I have a doc following the TOC named List of Illustrations with A-heads for each of the major categories, Photos, Charts, Maps etc. I have illustrations throughout the book identified by their unique paragraph style like PhotoStyle, ChartStyle etc. etc. The goal is when I generate the TOC, that it puts a list of each Illustration under the correct subheading IN the TOC. (Not in the LOI doc). This works to some degree if you are generating a TOC for a specific chapter, beyond that ... not so much. How should I approach this. New to Indesign,

I just made one text frame for the page and adusted the styles to place those three items. Problem solved. Before I did that I extended the text frame of the ChaptNum from the upper right across the page to the left edge and the TOC came out correctly also. I had no idea It generated the TOC as Vladan_Saveljic described above. Thanks

I will try this soon. The ChaptNum style is in the upper right of the page so you would think it would pick that up on the top to bottom scan followed by the other two styles which are left side mid page. Sent from my iPhone

From your TOC set-up screen I would have expected to see Level 1 at the top, but instead it is at the bottom, so what you are saying is that since the text frames are not connected the position of the text frame on the page determines where they fall in the TOC? In my example, the ChaptNum style would have to be further left on the page than the other two OR the text frames have to be connected. AM I understanding you correctly?

I arranged the Layers Panel as you suggested above, but when I set the TOC up the results remain unchanged. I haven’t found anything that will change the order in any way. I can however, apply TOC Styles to the TOC, change the tabs, leaders, and the page numbers are correct, it’s just the order that I can’t change.

A doc has 3 styles of interest on the title page, ChaptNum, ChaptTitle, and ChaptSubTitle. They are all on the same layer and the frames are not connected. These styles are then arranged on the TOC setup as shown above. ChaptNum (level 1) Chapt Title (level 2) ChaptSubTitle (level 3) When the TOC is generated the order is reversed. ChaptSubTitle ChaptTitle ChaptNum How can I fix this? (New to ID)

Unfortunately this could be a real problem. It may mean I go back to FM and try to finish there. I like Indesign and it looks like it would work nicely for an 8 page newsletter but probably not so well for an 800 pg technical document with TOC,crossreferences, illustrations, captions, tables, footnotes, endnotes, index, etc. Thanks for you input.

I need to create a numbered list with 2 levels. Level 1 is “Actions”; level 2, indented is “Sub-Actions”. The first number enumerates all Actions and sub-actions sequencially (1.2.3.) . The second number only applies to the sub-actions within an action and starts at i (i.ii.iii.) 1. Action 2. i. Sub-action 3. ii. Sub-action 4. Action 5. i. Sub-action This is easily done in framemaker using run-in headings, but not so much here. Is this even possible in ID?

Arnis: My experience with this solution is: 1) anchored frame(s) outside the text column stay only on the page where the anchor(s) is, (but can be referenced from anyplace) 2) if you add another anchored frame(s) on the next page the numbering starts at 1 again (if i knew how, this could probably be fixed) 3) if you have 50 graphic frames with a numbered caption, does that mean i need 50 anchored frames to cross-reference?

Something isn’t working right on this. I place a graphic frame on the page which puts it in FlowA. I insert a graphic into the graphic frame and expand it slightly and draw a text frame. In the text frame I apply a paragraph tag for a numbered caption. It numbers the caption relative to the text frame inside the graphic frame and not FlowA. Each paragraph within THAT caption, numbers correctly but in the next graphic frame the numbering on the caption re-starts at 1. I want the captions to number sequentially in document.

Win 7, FM 2015 Is it possible to place a graphic on a page with a numbered caption and have it stay in the same place on the same page even if editing before and after is done? Anchored frames don't work because they constantly move around, Graphic frames don't work because the caption is out of the flow and won't update and tables won't work because you have to chose flow to avoid white space. Is there an answer I am overlooking? I am a novice.

This looks like it is going to work as long as the PageAnchor tag is the last tag on the even page. If PageAnchor tag is placed in the text someplace above text on the even page then the text below that moves to below the new table on the odd page, which isn't really a limitation for what I am trying to do. I guess there isn't a Float option here. Thanks again for your help.

In the table designer you have a choice of "top of right page" and "float" and others. When I insert the table anchor in the text on the even page with "top of right page" selected, the new table takes all the text with it below where the table anchor is located. If I select "Float" the text will remain on the even page but the table is anchored to the text and I have little or no idea where it will show up especially as text is added or removed. My original approach was to just anchor the graphic to the page, not the text, That way I could always assure the graphic is where I wanted it to be. Then add a text frame under the graphic for the caption. So what became a problem was the caption would not autonumber since it is disconnected from the main flow. I'll give your instructions above a try and let you know how it works. Thanks for your help.

FM2015,Win7, Newbie to FM. The requirement is to place a graphic on each odd page with a description/discussion on the facing even page. Anchored frames move the graphics around and graphics anchored to the page won't auto-number in a disconnected text frame. Tables for the graphic can be set to start at the top of the right page, but the text won't flow back. What am I missing here? What is the quickest, easiest way to accomplish this...I am rapidly getting further behind.
