Every time I open my InDesign file, it says that fonts are missing. However, I have all the font files and have gone through the process of "replacing" all the fonts with the same fonts that the programs says is missing. Even with saving, this never saves the linking of the fonts, so the error message for missing fonts always appears. Is there a way to permanently embed the fonts in InDesign? If so, how? Thanks!

All, Adobe Tech Support got back to me today. They said the gradient tool would not work properly due to insufficient video RAM in my computer. Apparently, you need at least 2 GB of video RAM for Photoshop 2021, while mine was much lower. Very odd the items that still work and random items that don't work due to this. Anyway, that's their official position, and I'd thought I'd pass it along. Thanks for all your input and help!

I'm not sure what is meant by 'layer mask settings.' I can go into 'Select & Mask' and adjust those settings, but I don't see 'density' in there. Thanks.

Thanks, So, yes, I have tried 'Black to Transparent,' with blending modes normal, but it just filled my entire mask with black. It's very strange.

Side note: I just asked someone else to check on their gradient tool's behaviors, and they have the same exact problem as me. We never knew the gradient tool was supposed to behave the other way, as you all have known. So, this problem must be rooted beyond just my computer.

Thanks. Just tried the grouping of layers and testing if the problem persists on masks of groups---The answer is Yes, the problem is still happening. I am using Win 10 via bootcamp (on a MBP).

I called Adobe Tech Support and showed them the issue remotely. They said that they would have to advance the case, so I'll wait on that. Side note, the workaround that I came up with for this---albeit extremely inefficient---is that you can repeatedly create grouped layers and then create a mask for each new group and then use the gradient tool independently on each one with no issue. So, you end up with several "nested groups." Not ideal but it works.

Thank you. There was no film cut. I also thought it was odd that 'Black to Transparent' created an entirely blacked-out mask. I only went into the Gradient Editor to demonstrate that I was indeed set to 'Black to Transparent.' I had already click the button for it, so there was no need to repeat this. I just tried it again with Black to Transparent and had same results. I have reset Photoshop, but this did not correct the issue. I don't know how to "reload standard gradients," but I have reset the gradient tool, but with no success in remedying this issue. Thanks.

Thank you. I have tried resetting the tool and resetting Photoshop preferences. Honestly, I've been using Photoshop for about 15 years, and the gradient tool always behaved this way, so I thought that was standard behavior for the gradient tool until I saw the tutorial video.

In this screen recording video, you'll be able to see me trying both Black to White and Black to Transparent for the Gradient tool (in the mask of the image). You'll see that it's not additive, but rather each new stroke wipes out the prior one. (Prior to this, I did try resetting the tool as well.) Interesting. Mine doesn't seem to behave in this way. Whatever is laid down in the prior gradient tool stroke disappears and only the new gradient tool stroke results seem to present themselves.

Thank you. However, this is not the issue. In the video, he is able to almost 'paint' like with a brush with the gradient tool, and it continues to add black to the mask. Conversely, for me, for every stroke of the gradient tool, it eliminates the prior gradient in the mask and starts fresh. There is nothing additive. Nothing builds upon the prior gradient tool stroke. It's all or nothing.

When I use the gradient tool, it affects the layer, and if I am unhappy with its results, I just UNDO and then try again. It is basically a "one shot deal" ... love it or hate it. However, in this YouTube tutorial (5:25 to 6 min.), the gradient tool in the mask seems to be ADDITIVE, like he keeps adding to what is being masked. https://youtu.be/oZr378NyOKM?list=PLHRSsMUaMQK3CeE_8Ayg36ix01Zgh9teI&t=325 When I try this, after one gradient tool stroke, it completely annihilates any prior masking and creates something from scratch. In Quick Mask Mode, what is the difference between the: Cmd+I: (this seems to invert whatever area is RED) vs. Cmd+Shift+ I (this seems to invert whatever is selected by the marching ants). I thought the red area always represented the area to be masked and so, this would be the same as the marching ants. Is the Cmd+Shift+ I just a special temporary manipulation of the marching ants?---because once I exist Quick Mask, those additional marching ants added in Quick Mask disappear. Thanks!

Thanks to both Jane and Jeff! I wasn't able to exactly replicate the steps from the video tutorial, but I used a bit from both of your advice. The following seemed to work: 1. As in the tutorial, I filled the upper shape with red and the lower shape with white. 2. While on same "path layer," lower white shape was set to Subtract Front, while the upper red shape was set to Intersect Shape Area. 3. Vector Mask, while red upper shape's layer is selected. 4. View from Paths tab... 5. White lower shape's layer hidden to show that only the upper portion of the red top shape remains. I'm not sure how the person who made the tutorial was able to get around this extra step of setting the paths to two different path operations. Thanks so much!

Oh, sure, Sorry for the confusion. The path created for the red lining was the "wrong" shape to then be able to apply certain fx like bevel/emboss to make it look like the lining was rolling back into the shoe interior (because the path was just a rough over-sized shape). (This will make more sense in the video.) I've posted a link to a short clip of the tutorial here. I was watching an excellent tutorial on rendering when they used 2 overlapping paths to then do a vector mask, resulting in only a portion remaining visible. One path outlined the white "upper" of a sneaker. The other path outlined the interior red lining of the sneaker. These paths overlapped, as when they drew the paths of the lining, they purposely made them overlap, as the lining would be hidden on a layer below. Using a test of two basic overlapping paths, I tried every path operation possible with a vector mask, and I still cannot get the desired result, that they did in the tutorial. It would be great if someone could help shed some light on this. (PDF attached) Thanks!
