Yes, that is what I don't like about it, though if you have a book with sections and section toc's, I guess there isn't a choice unless a mini toc can be produced. I was just wondering if there was any other reason behind the two. Thanks!

Good Morning, Since there are two ways to make a TOC: a. Add TOC b. Special TOC for document Our component manuals have a cover, toc, body, and back cover. Our product manuals are set up by section, and have the toc, and body. Of course a cover and back cover. So my question is what is the difference in using one or the other toc:? We also have to have bookmarks and links in the toc? Just thought I would get the real reason behind which one is used for what. Thanks, LS

Thanks Jeff and Arnis, I did look into that. I may have been doing something wrong though. I added the book files and made a pdf. None of the table of contents were in the big book. It just skipped them. This would have given the bookmarks, sections and contents of each section. That would have been great. But, for a huge manual, as you said, it is crazy making a pdf. I only added 3 books to my big book and it took forever. I am not very familiar with scripts, but have used them from time to time. I may have to do that. Thanks!

Thank you for replying. We don't want to go to 2015...uggg. I have tried several different things and have been looking in the help files. I have yet to see anything that has more than one TOC. You can make a TOC, it is just that the bookmarks don't work and the Table of Contents have no links. Maybe I can find another way that the department will agree to. Thanks, ls

Hello All, I hope someone can help me. We have changed our Product Manual Templates to having a TOC in each section. The problem is that I haven't been able to get the TOC to have links when making a PDF. Also, the only way I have found to make a TOC for each section is using the Special TOC while the Body section is open (which I can't update, and isn't working). When I try to add a TOC to a folder within the book, it looks at the whole book. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!! I am using FM12....

Good Morning... Have updated Framemaker to the 12.0.4 version. When I try to use the type "A" button, I click in my frame and a message comes up giving me a Hotspot window. Can I still type text somehow without using the text box and then typing the text? Thanks, ls

Hi ais007, This is gonna sound really crazy, but this happened to me a couple of years ago. Below is the answer....hope it helps for you! Found the answer to this in the framers digest mailout (framers Digest, Vol 71, Issue 9). Hopefully it wll help you too. I am not sure about the Illustrator files, but for Photoshop, resize your images so that the last number is an even number. (example: change 3.25 to 3.24) This worked for me! I couldn't believe it! You can do a list of references and include font. This will give you a LOR document with all the fonts in the document. Check it and see if you see any that should not be in there. I had to do this with a few files myself. If you see a font that shouldn't be there, ctrl alt click on it in the LOR document and it will take you to the page of your document that it is on. You can then change it. Special>List of References>click on yes and the doc will generate the list from there. Hope this helps. I found this out on the forum here a few weeks ago. ls

Hi Jeff, After I realized that I didn't make the setprint.ini file, I did that and deleted the printer=adobe pdf in the .dll file. But it still doesn't work. I save to pdf anyway, I was just trying to optimize my usage by making the default printer in FM the adobe pdf printer. Anyway, the .dll file from above has the below information in it. nankinnankin, OH gosh, I have looked and looked to find a way to get rid of this. It got so bad the other day, we just upgraded to FM12. So far, I haven't gotten the error....but I haven't been working in FM that much. Mine was happening when I would copy and paste and do some other little things. I would go up to save and then get the error...course crash! I also had it happen on opening as you have had. I had decided it just didn't like the fact that I was doing things quickly. I also tried the MIF wash...ect.... Anyway, just wanted you to know that you definately aren't alone. I have read several posts on this and they were all different. Hi Arnis, I tried to use the setprint on initialization and it doesn't work. Wonder what I am doing wrong? Is there a specific place in the file that I should enter "Printer=Adobe PDF" (no quotes)? Oh sorry, I am in FM12.01 now instead of 10. Thanks, ls

Thanks so much for all your help!! I will defrag and I guess move my Adobe programs to the external drive so that I will have more hard drive space. It isn't a network drive. I did try the small pdf trick and it didn't make any difference. I will let you know if moving my programs makes a difference!! Thanks again!!! ls

Soooo my pdf just got finished. Took almost 20 minutes. But the good part is that FM didn't crash. I didn't click on "Tags" in the pdf setup. Yay!! Guess it couldn't take that. Now if I could get it to work like everyone elses computer... And yes their computers are the same. The only difference in the co-worker's computer is that he has 40 g hard drive left and I only have 20 g. Hard drive space is 118 g. We have tons of programs including Solid Works. The older computer had a bigger hard drive. I guess I can try moving all my Adobe to the external drive. That is what another co-worker had to do. What do you think? Thanks, ls

The pdf of the current one is 37m / actual file size of the body of the document is 62m.. The current tps is 400m. I use tiffs and ai files that are all referenced. Seems this is just my problem. A co-worker just made the pdf in about 2 minutes. One good thing. I had double spaces in the names of the files. Took those out and the links work in the pdf....yay!!.....Also, I didn't click on Tags. The file still took forever, but it didn't crash. I am trying larger file right now that the tps is 749m. Takes forever for the tps to start, much less make the pdf. Will let you know if it crashes on this. Thanks, ls

OH wow!!! I was soooo hoping that would work. I made a pdf of a smaller book and it was fine. This one did the same....FM ran out of memory..... Anything of any size is when this happens....this book isn't huge. But before this computer, although slow, this didn't happen. Thanks!

Well, it was, but we installed to an external drive hoping to help the problem. Nothing has changed. This was happening before we re-installed to the other drive. I now have another crazy problem though. Right after I posted, I went back to FM to try another file and it's links, hoping that it is just that book. Anyway, now I get a error saying that it can't find the file, make sure it exist. The only thing I can open is on my desktop. This is sooooo strange! Course I had moved the book to my desktop to see if it would be faster. Course it wasn't. I have rebooted and it still doesn't find files. UGGGGG..... I don't know what to do about all this. It was bad enough when it was shutting down every time.

Ha....now that you mention it....there is...we were just testing some things. I am also having a problem with links in this document...just weird. Anyway, have uninstalled, and installed. Have moved the book to desktop, and same happens. FM runs out of memory. Below are some pics.....I have never looked at the console error before. This is just for this books. Normally the pdf works, just that FM runs out of memory and I have to shut it down. This book just happens to be driving me nuts. Thanks!
