OK...this is strange...I had deleted an old para tag called H2 parts pageTOC (with no space...just trying to make this work...), but I have attached what the TOC creates on its reference page. It includes the old para tag with no tab at the top of the page. I don't have that in my document anymore. Why is it including it in my reference page? When I click on the H2 parts page in the TOC...it is the old one with no space. How do I get rid of the old tag since it isn't in my body document any more. I have had this happen before....old tags showing up for no reason...when I know I have deleted them....kind of strange. When I delete the para tag in the TOC and save it and make a new TOC...I get the (thought it was courier but it is Times New Roman, 12 pt...with no properties set up and the old para comes back.... I am sorry for all this...I just would really like to use the reference table instead of manually using a different odd and even master page for our parts pages. Oh...and the only one with no asterik is the one that doesn't work. Thanks, ls

I have attached the first time I create a toc and the second time after I correctthe formatting in the first toc and save it. For some reason the only thing not working is the tab. Thanks, ls

My pages work great, they use the correct master pages. It is the toc that has the trouble. It doesn't recognize the tab. I have inserted a pic of the table thinking I did what you said...is this correct? It didn't help my TOC...so I guess I don't know what you are saying. Thanks, ls

I have attached the reference table, toc set up and results in the toc. H2, and H2 parts page toc are set up using the same tabs, but the H2 parts page toc isn't recognized. And as I said before, it worked when I was using a parts page odd and even master page and manually telling each page which one to use....so I figure I must be doing something wrong in the reference page table. I used the advice about the master pages with specific para tags using the table in the reference pages...I was so thrilled...but then I tried to make the TOC. I have tried to change the range indicator to see if that mattered...but it didn't. When I create the TOC...it will not reconize my tabs in the reference pages. It actually makes the parts page toc para tag into courier 12 point with none if the para tag properties. I can change it in the TOC and save it, then make another TOC and the para properties are there but my tabs aren't. My TOC worked in another document when I had a parts page odd and even master, but I was adding the correct master page manualy each time and not using the reference table. Any idea on what I am doing wrong? Thanks for your help, ls

I am using FM9....so I don't know if the same shortcuts apply, but this is what I found out last week. Use the Find and Replace tool: With smart quotes turned off and the Num Lock key turned on: Alt0147 will give you beginning quotation marks Alt0148 will give you ending quotation marks In the Find box use ALT0147 or ALT0148 for the beginning or ending quotes. When you click in the box and type one of the shortcuts the correct quote will be shown in the box. In the replace box type the regular straight quotes on your keyboard. I was thrilled that it would work!...course you do have to do them separately and be careful not to replace the curly quotes that you want to leave in your document. Hope this helps using FM8.... ls

Can you also do this with a running header? Our docs are set up so that the first heading is always in the header. But, we also have Replacement Parts pages that we only want Replacement Parts to be in the header and not the title of the part. Replacement Parts is only on the frist page and then each one after that only has the part number and name ect.... so, in the TOC, Replacement Parts is the Heading 1 and the parts themselves are Heading 2. I set up two new master pages...an odd and even....with Replacement Parts in the header. Is there an easier way.....so that I don't have to manually apply the odd or even Master Replacement Parts page? As you know...we have only been using FM9 for a few months and are still learning everyday.... Thanks, ls

What I have found out, is that if I turn the smart quotes off, I will get what we use for inch marks. Since we don't use quotation marks that often, I can use Alt0147 and Alt0148 for open and closed quotations with the Num Lock key turned on and it also works in the find and change box also...which is cool....! Still haven't figured out the fraction super and sub script. Any idea? Thanks, lsk

I am using Framemaker 9. Is there an easy way to type inch marks and fractions with super and subscript numbers? I did find where to change quotation marks to inch symbols in text, but need to also do this in text boxes. But turning smart quotes on and off seems to be a little much everytime, especially as much as we use the inch mark symbol. When I go to the Character Palete under File/Utilities and click on the inch mark symbol, it types a two, then I have to change the font to symbol in the document which seems like a little to much just to get the inch mark symbol. When I try to super and sub for a fraction in the character palete, it will not super or sub just the number highlighted.I have tried the hex code shortcut and I get a quotation mark. I know I am missing something pretty simple. Will someone give me a simple answer? Also I would like to be able to find and replace quotation marks to inch marks. Thanks, lsk

Hi, In case you haven't seen the below thread, you might want to read through it. Don't know if it is exactly what you are experiencing or not. My issue has not been resolved as of yet. Maybe that has been my problem all along also. I have been moving tabs to set up my para styles too. Whatever it is...I can't seem to change it. I am going to try Michaels idea when I get a chance. Thanks, lsk

I am using FM 9 and I made the tables in FM. Have been having several buggy problems. I have attached a screen shot of the custom cell ruling that I have applied. Beside it is what comes up when you click on "show current settings"....and you can see they don't match. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks, lsk

If you use the Custome Ruling and Shading window to make a border around a table cell and decide that you don't want it anymore....how do you get the ruling to go away? I have set everything to none...everywhere. I actually got this to work one time with the set line width option. It gave me the option of 0.0. But I have not been able to recreate that instance and I can't get rid the the ruling I set up. Anybody have this happen? I seem to have some very strange problems... lsk

I downloaded the new patch...but it didn't make a difference. Everytime I make a para format the para designer freezes.. just stops....you can't do anything...I have to shut the program down entirely...not just the document. Glad it's not just me though and I hope that someone can figure out what is making this happen to us. Thanks for continuing to try to help us out. lsk

I am also experiencing this problem again. The problem went away after the patch and I switched to PDF default printer, but has returned. Every time I make a paragraph format, I have to close FM down to make another one. I am also running Windows XP, Service Pack 3, with 3.4 GB Ram free. Just glad to see this back on the list of questions. Hopefully someone can figure out what else could be the problem. Thanks, ls

Thank you!!... that absolutely worked for the paragraph style. I have downloaded the patch though....don't know why this started happening again. I changed my default printer back to PDF printer and rebooted to make sure it would take. But every time I make a different paragraph, I have to close framemaker.... ls

I am still getting the text as Bold and everytime I make a para format and move things around my panel freezes. I had this problem when we first got FM9 but it was solved...it has re-appeared....... I remember we did something with the Character Format list to get the Note: bold (or whatver the paragraph format is). ls

Don't know for sure if this applies, but it sounds like it. I made a blank page para tag that would begin on the next page, and used a reference page with "This page intentionally left blank." typed on it and named it blank page. In the paragraph designer for the para blank page I just selected the Frame Below Pgf. to be blank page. It works great!! ls

Just to let you know....I don't know why I couldn't get the table change bar to work yesterday. But....I did it today, and again, by adding a paratag after the table and making sure to highlight through that tag, I got a complete change bar line down the side of the table. Yea!! ls

After playing around with it, I went to a one column document to see if it would work there. Of course I was importing paragraph tags from a document with side heads, so everytime I would try to do anything I would get an error message about side heads. Anyway, you have to make sure that from the anchor down past the figure and paragraph tag after the figure is set up to be across all columns and/or columns and sideheads. Hightlight from the anchor of the figure, all the way through the figure tag/or spacer tag and click on the change bar radio button and it will make the change bar down the whole side of all. It also works if a figure is set up in a table, but you need a body/spacer tag after the table for it to highlight the whole thing. I couldn't get it to work on a regular table. I had to highlight the table cells for the change bars to show up. I would like for the change bar beside a table to be a complete line, but we haven't found a way to get it to do that. They just correlate with the cells. (Which is fine, at least we can get them there now...lol.) Hope that helps someone!! ls

How can I make a change bar down along the side of a figure or table that is center across columns. I have no problem when the figure or table is inside the column even with two column documents. I have tried "across all columns" with two columns and with a side head column with no luck. I have also tried the different positions that the change bars can be placed. It will only place the change bar where the figure or table is anchored. I have some examples if needed. Thanks, ls

After reading your answer again, I gave it a shot with a small document that I made. We were thinking that we would have to have two FM files. But moving the grayscale or color files to the folder the FM file is in worked. We are going to test it Monday to see if it works with the printer.....thanks again....
