As above, when I try an install Acrobat 9 the install cannot complete because of the older version. When I try and remove it I recieve the Error 1714 message. I'll give the Windows Cleanup Utility a shot.

After that I'll see if Version does indeed download. Should I back up everything before using the Windows Cleanup or does it do it automatically?

    You should backup first.

Thanks Mike, for the advice. I will stay on Version 8.1.2 for the time being, or until Adobe finds the culprit to my installation problem for Version 9.0. I do find it interesting that many of the people posting to this thread are experiencing EXACTLY the same problem I am, IE, the download goes to 100%, but the install phase just disappears. That doesn't sound like a problem unique to my configuration (nothing special, XP with SP 3). I have been using Adobe Reader for the past several years, each new version, and intermediate updates installed without any problem until Version 9.0, and others are experiencing the exact same problem trying to install Version 9.0. Seems to me that Adobe might be interested enough to at least post something on their site at least addressing the issue. Am I wrong???

I agree 100% with Don Brohm's comment. I was one of the very first to post to this thread, describing in detail exactly what I was experiencing when I tried to instal Version 9. That was almost 3 weeks ago. I STILL have no idea what is wrong, and Adobe has responding exactly "ZERO" times to my direct emails asking for help, nor to the MANY posts to this thread describing exactly the same problem I am having installing Version 9, IE, the download goes perfectly, then the install phase just disappears, NOTHING happens after the download which appears to be successful to 100%, BUT then nothing happens, no error message, just NOTHING after the download, and Adobe remains strangely silent, not offering any help at all in solving this mystery. I do appreciate the many attempts from other posters offering suggestions, BUT as a fairly novice user of PC software, I am, and I believe many others fall into the same category as I do, very uncomfortable trying any of the many suggestions posted in this thread to try and get Version 9 installed, since I would have no idea how to recover from any error that might occur trying to get the new version installed. I do have Version 8.1.2 installed and it works perfectly. I need Adobe Reader for my work on my PC, so until Adobe comes out with their fix for this problem which others are experiencing in addition to me, I feel that I must stick with Version 8.1.2. The lack of any response from Adobe at all to even admitting that there is a problem going from Version 8.1.2 to Version 9 is really the problem, and I am very disappointed with Adobe's lack of customer support for this problem. They just don't seem intersted in fixing it at all at this point. Three weeks is enough time to reply to the problems described in this thread.

    Ronald,

Adobe doesn't do technical support by email. If you want technical
support for the free Reader application you have to pay for it. While I
am sure nearly every piece of software has problems. I don't think
Reader 9 is more problem some then its predecessors. At this site we
tend to get people with problems. That is why they come here. Most
    people do not have problems.

The Windows Environment is quite varied in terms of software and
hardware. Windows doesn't completely separate its hardware from its
software. Nor is one piece of software always completely separate from
other software running at the same time. This makes it difficult to
write software that will run without issue on everyone's computer.
Fortunately, with painstaking methods it is usually possible to get
everyone up and running. It can be painful, but it is usually possible.
When all else fails, it is sometimes necessary to re-install the OS from
scratch, then install the problem some app (Reader in this case), and
then one by one add other programs, until we find the culprit. Sometimes
we are lucky and all the other applications install without issue.

At the moment you are running Reader 8.1.2 and it is working for you.
Perhaps that is for the best and you should leave Reader 9 until you
find you must have it or you find you have extra time on your hands.

What bugs me is that obviously there is something wrong with the Version 9 of the reader. Yet Adobe seems to care less, nothing from them to help with these problems.

Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup? You need to follow the directions
that came with it very carefully.

You will at some point get a list of things to "force uninstall". You
would choose the thing you need to get rid of.

Please DON'T. Third party uninstallers may do more harm than good.
Please use ONLY Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup.
