    I have Adobe acrobat reader 8.1.1 Iam trying to install 9 but it keeps saying it can't unistall 8.1.1 and a patch is missing.
    haven't got a clue how to manually unistall as i have tried using add/remove programs and it still says
    'the patch packet couldn't be opened. verify that the patch packet exists and that you can access it, or contcat the application venodr to check that there is a valid Windows installer patch package'
    HELP please! this is driving me crazy!
    Thanks

    Pat Willener--Have you tried using that update? When I used it on a reinstallation of Adobe Reader 8.0 (in an attempt to reach 8.1.2 by that route rather than System Restore) I was told, after installation and upon opening Reader, something about it being an unsuitable plug in and that Reader would have to close. And it did everytime I tried to start Reader from then on.
    When I read the description of that update, it seems a little confused whether it is to update 8.1.2 or 8.0.
    But we are intruding on this thread which has to do with installing Reader 9.

    Removed from where...? I can still see it here http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.1.2SU/misc/AcrobatReaderUpd812_SU1_all.msi

    Ted Neubauer --Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately it did not help me. The Registry keys mentioned were already deleted by the uninstallation of Adobe Reader 8.1.2. (I checked before and after.)
    And another attempt today to install Reader 9 again went to 99.90% and stopped there as before. (In my case when the 99.90% level was reached, my Epson Scanner's Copy Utility opens (!). When I click that window off the Reader installation window closes as well. I have tried not closing off the Epson window for 5-15 minutes just in case the installation might proceed to 100%, but no success.)
    P.S. Anyone who uninstalls Reader 8 or 8.1.2 before trying to install Reader 9 will find that Adobe has removed the option to download and reinstall the 8.1.2 security update. At best, and this is even if you have kept a copy of the Reader 8 installation file, you will be able to install only Reader 8 which supposedly has a security problem.
    Fortunately, using System Restore, I was able to go back to Reader 8.1.2 .

    For those of you have problems installing v9 after uninstalling a previous version - Check for and delete the following registry keys:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\{AdobeReaderProductGUID}

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Features\{AdobeReaderProductGUID}

    i.e. Reader 8.1.2 Product GUID is: 68AB67CA7DA73301B7448A2100000030.

    To identify the {AdobeReaderProductGUID}:
    * Open Regedit
    * Browse to the locations above
    * Highlight the ProductGUID list in the left pane (under Products & Features), then selecting one at a time look for the "ProductName" in the right pane
    * Once you have POSITIVELY identified the proper keys - Delete them

    If you are not comfortable editing the registry manually - you can try using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from Microsoft. CAUTION - using this utility with Office 2007 (and some other apps) installed may cause you to have to reinstall them.

    Upon trying to install Adobe Reader 9, I received the following message: Error 1714 The older version of Adobe Reader 9 cannot be removed. Contact your techanical support group. I haven't received any support from them yet. Any suggestions? I can't find anywhere on by hard drive where I have installed Adobe Reader 9, so I don't have any idea of how to unistall it.

    After installing Adobe Reader 9, I can no longer open pdf files that come as email attachments. Even attachments I opened two weeks ago no longer open. Error message is from Microsoft Outlook and reads "Application not found." I've found Adobe Reader in my "All Programs" list. After opening the email, I right-click the attachment and save it as a file. Then, I can open Adobe Reader and browse to that file and open it successfully. But NOT by double-clicking the attachment in the email. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Sounds like you have to re-associate Reader with the pdf extension.

    The same thing just happened to me twice. Says Adobe Reader has been downloaded, and I saw it "install", but it is nowhere to be found. I'm trying to do this on my mom's computer. I've downgrades all of mine to xp, which I highly recommend.
