    Thanks James.

my solution was to install Foxit instead. Too much to do to waste time on Adobe. OK so far.

    REAL BEHAVIOR AND REAL SOLUTION

    BEHAVIOR
    --------
Basically, after decompressing all files in
    "{USERPROFILE}\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Setup Files"
the installtion process want to start SETUP.EXE.
I don't know why, but most of times it find another file named "SETUP.EXE" rather in other location that it decompress and start it. It looks like it find in the "INSTALLPATH" folder or anything else.
In my case it found MS Office Setup on a workstation and HP Printer Setup on another workstation.

    WORKAROUND
    ----------
When it finished to decompress all files in this folder:
    "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Setup Files"
let the other setup program start without interrupt it.
Copy all files and folders (Setup.EXE, Reader9, Data1.CAB,...) to another folder and then stop the wrong setup process. After cancel the wrong setup program, the main window of Adobe installation will remove all files in the "%USERPROFILE%...\Setup File" folder. That's why we need to copy it to another location.

Now start the Setup.EXE from the folder where it was copied manually.
For future installation, I used this folder on CD rather than the file download from the internet that I we don't ever need and that takes to much space on disk for it usability.

    SOLUTION for Adobe
    ------------------
I think Adobe must fix this by sending, from internet, ZIP file containing all uncompressed files and folders (Setup.EXE, Reader9, Data1.CAB,...) rather than EXE that cannot work more efficiently.
I have this problem since version 8.x. and I think the problem is present since awhile.

Sorry, did not mean to repeat myself, but please do download & run 'Windows Install Clean Up' to solve the error 1714 when installing Adobe Reader ver. 9.0. Bonnie

Error message 1714 for Adobe Reader 9 install: I just fixed that problem myself! I downloaded 'Windows Install Clean Up', it's free, ran it, it removed the problem with the older version that was interferring with the install program, then adobe 9 installed nicely. Please give it a try. Bonnie.

    Hello All,

During the installation of Adobe Reader 9 the RealPlayer Installation Wizard started at the 99.90% point mentioned in previous posts. The use of the Process Monitor (Procmon.exe) from sysinternals enabled me to see that setup.exe in "C:\Documents and Settings\account\Application Data\Real\RealOne Player\setup\" was being called. Renaming setup.exe gave me an error message during the subsequent installation attempt. The solution was to rename the root folder from Real to 0Real. This type of workaround my be applicable when other non-Adobe processes interfere.

Dear Caer Bryn & ALL others reading this thread:...It is obvious to the MOST casual of observers that Adobe does NOT GIVE a S%*! about the problem...This thread started on July,2,2008 & has 122 (now 123) posts...The folks at Adobe MUST be BLIND , DEAF & DUMB....First up: The Adobe file (If you are lucky enough to download & install it successfully) IS a space HOGGER even at 25.1MB...That's a HUGE file that does so LITTLE...My FINAL word of advice (I hope) is to GET Foxit at:

    http://www.download.com/Foxit-Reader/3000-2079_4-10313206.html

& DOWNLOAD it....That file is ONLY 2.57MB...IF you don't like it for ANY reason , go to Add/Remove programs & REMOVE it...Then , if you so choose , you can battle it out with Adobe...Enough said !! BEST Regards & LUCK to ALL....

I am on Windows XP, and have the same problem as many others - I can download Reader 9 as AdbeRdr90 en US.exe, and as AdbeRdr90 en US Std.exe, but on running them, both stop at 99.90% and the Copy Utility window opens.

All the posts that mention the contents of the Copy Utility window mention EPSON printers and scanners. Is the problem related to us all using Epson software too?

I notice that both the original download, and the one recommended in this thread, have exactly the same File Version - 2.0.0.20, although the first is 33.4MB and the second is 25.1MB. Why the huge difference in file size?

Meanwhile, I'll try to convert to Foxit. It is incomprehensible that no-one from Adobe appears to be reading this thread.

Dear "first"; I have all but given up on Adobe !! May I reccommend Foxit...It does ALMOST EXACTLT the same features as Adobe 8 or any version I've seen...AND it doesn't hog nearly as much space as Adobe ( 2.56MB )...You can get it FREE at this link.....

    http://www.download.com:80/Foxit-Reader/3000-2079_4-10313206.html

At least download it & try it....Best of luck...Ron.M
