"am using Windows Vista. I went to toolbar.google.com. On the right hand side you will see 'Install Toolbar", click on that, and it will give you options as to what things you want to install with it and one of those options is Adobe Reader."

Nice idea, didn't work for me though as a Firefox user. It didn't give any options when I clicked that button. It just went ahead and installed the Firefox extension even though I already have the Google toolbar. Reader is not to be found anywhere in the toolbar options.

My problem on WinXP SP2 is that running the Adobe Reader 9 installer seems to do nothing except update my modem driver.

I of course turned off NOD32 before installing (adivsable for any Windows user to turn off any AV apps before installing any program). The progress bar appears to show the program installing up to 99.98%, but after the device driver installation wizard runs and I click to close the wizard, the whole process quits and no copy of Reader exists anywhere on my system. Tried it with both the download from the Adobe Reader download page and the file from the FTP site suggested above, with the same results.

I use Firefox Portable 3.0.1---I refuse to use IE---and it's not updated with the plug-in (though I'm not sure that's terribly surprising). I've been trying to find a copy of Reader 8, which is not to be had from the Adobe store because all links and buttons lead to the Reader 9 download. >:-( This is taking far more time than it needs to.

One more thing- those of you that don't know this already- the google- or yahoo or my space or my way toolbars are all loaded with LEGAL spyware. Meaning that they monitor everything your computer does and send the results back to the agencys that want to know, and soon you will be recieving more espam than you know what to do with. Another bad site for this is smiley central. i have found so many embedded registry entries and other stupid files in computers that had all this nonsense in them. I am not too particularly fond of knowing that big brother resides in everyone's computers cause no matter what you use your computer for or what you watch or listen to- it is your space, and it should stay that way. Another one to watch out for if you dont know it already is ANTISPY 2009 or anything that comes from coolkidweb. they use rootkits and embedded adware to launch trojans that attatch themselves to key windows registry files to launch viruses and then try to sell you thier "cure" which actually does nothing.

If you buy it, then you have merely encouraged thier illegal actions, and thrown your money away cause you will still have to do a clean install of windows and a full reformat to get rid of it all. Those of you that have not backed up your files will lose everything. i have dealt with 6 computers this week that had this problem and by the way- most free versions of anti virus such as avg and the others do not search or support rootkits. you have to have PAID anti virus to do that- so far this virus has gotten past AVG free, McAfee trial, Norman trial, Norton trial and a lot of others and the only one that i know actually gets rid of it is the full paid commercial version of AVG.Even then it will corrupt your windows files so bad it wil render your computer unusable even after the viruses have been found. These are the days when everyone should own a good sold outboard usb hard drive to back up your files daily. those of you with a lot of personal text, picture or music files, DO NOT STORE THEM ON YOUR COMPUTER- unless you have serious anti virus, paid up and fully updated. so if you have nbought a new computer and the only anti virus you have is the trial version that came with it, then you need to do more.FAST this has been getting worse every week- By the way the post from Gleb at 1 am this morning works- its clean and it will install the latest adobe 9 product. EXCUUUSE ME AND MY SOaPBOX today.

To Elaine: first doublecheck any anti virus you may have cause the google toolbar its trying to installed can be blocked by several anti spy / anti virus programs. The other thing is make sure you have cleaned up all your temporary internet files. if you go to control panel-internet options, ther are several ways to clean out your IE7, and the other is to go into control panel/computer management/disc management/ and right click on your c drive and ther will be an icon to clean out all unneccesary files, click on it and check all the boxes once it has run and do the cleanup. its safe and yor computer will love you for it. then try again.
Those of you looking to remove the google toolbar- first in internet options, on the last tab, there will be a browser reset. Do that but remember you will have to go into options and reassign your adobe reader, shockwave player and java plugins once you do. then go to program files and delete the google folder if it will let you.
And to go farther than that- there is a search program that will allow you to find files that windows does not want you to find-
It is Effective File Search by Sowsoft. install it- assign it to the c drive- and search google or anything else you want to find.Right click delete does not work here- you will have to use the delete function in thier toolbox at the top of the page. this search blows windows search and the dog away- i will not run without it.
I cannot speak for mozilla or netscape as i refuse to use any of that on my computers but this will get rid of the google toolbar once installed. As for reader- you may have to disable your firewall and anti spy or anti virus to load it but remember you will be getting adobe air and the google toolbar with it until adobe comes to thier senses with this.

Reply to posts #47 and #56.
I tried the link suggested by Gleb in post #56 and PRESTO, the download of Adobe 9.0 proceeded perfectly, none of the original problems I was having that the download went to 99.99%, but the install phase just never occurred was not there this time with the download suggested by Gleb in post #56. I now have Adobe 9.0 installed and working perfectly. I DID NOT have to do any of the steps suggested by Paul in post #47, IE, I DID NOT remove my old version (Version 8.1.2) before trying the link suggested by Gleb in post #56, nor did I do any of the changes to my registry suggested by Paul in post #47 before trying the link in post #56, I simply clicked on the link suggested by Gleb in post #56, and the download and install of Adobe Reader 9.0 proceeded to completion without any errors encountered during the process. That does say to me that all the problems all of us were having with the original download link released by Adobe around July 1st had some kind of a problem in it that Adobe quietly corrected with the new link that both Paul and Gleb listed in their posts. For all of you still having problems installing Version 9.0, give the new link a try, it solved all the old problems I was having without me having to uninstall my old version first, or having to make any registry changes before trying the new link. Good Luck

I am having the same problem this morning. I run a computer shop in Rockford Il. a lot of my customers are either senior citizens on a fixed income or low income people cause of large families or the serious lack of employment. Economically this town is a mess since NAFTA hit, either way, a lot of folks are still running older computers that occasionally need service. This morning I am doing a fresh install on an older 700mhz Cyrix III that needed a new hard drive. Sometime in the last 48 hours, adobe went and added the google toolbar as a MANDATORY install as soon as you land on the adobe reader page. this computer is too old and barely handles IE7 as it is.
but the real problem is the google toolbar itself. there are several antispy and virus programs that will not let it install. Once installed, you cannot remove all the pieces of it. The fact that adobe has removed the freedom of our own choice to install adobe air and now the google toolbar is sheer madness. there are other ways to read a pdf file. If you are having the same problem with an older or low powered laptop, please let the people at adobe know by voicing your opinion. Don't give us what we don't want or need- it is our choice what we put in our computers, not yours. I am a semi retired FCC lic. broadcast engineer, and according to the communications act of 1936, who's laws still apply today, any product or device that is modified or improved in the future MUST still be able to comply with all previously built equipment. Go to FCC.com and find out more. In the meantime, you can find several older bootleg copies of acrobat on limewire that will allow you to read pdf files without the toolbar.

Don't let big business railroad your decisions- this is America, and at the moment we still have freedom of choice.

I tried the link you suggested, but I can't get it - It says that IE cannot display this webpage. Do you have another suggestion, cause I am having the same problem as others getting Adobe installed into my computer. Thanks.
