Question

After 11.0.10 update Save as gives the error "there was a problem reading this document (21)"

We have some PDF reports that are generated from Microsoft Dynamcs AX.

When we try to "Save as" we get an error.

The client PCs that have Reader 11.0.08 do not have any problems.

The PCs that have Reader 11.0.10 give the following messages on save as:

"The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (21)"

when I click OK to that error I get "Out of memory error"

I read that holding down CTRL when clicking OK would give additional information, and it told me this: "This direct object already has a container"

No older versions of Reader have had any problems with these same PDF files.

Hello all. After beating my head against this error for a bunch of our users, I found something that DID work.

Our user was combining 7 pdf's that were exports from indesign. these were 20-90 pages a piece. When we normally combined the files and went to save-as, we got error 21, could not save. After some tinkering, I went into explorer/folder view, highlighted all the pdf's I was going to combine, right clicked and selected "combine in Acrobat." The acrobat combine documents window came up. Before pressing ok to combine, I selected the options menu and changed the size from normal to small. Instead of combining and try to shrink later (which sometimes also brought up the low memory error) it shrank each document first and then appended them to the larger default binder1.pdf. When complete, I saved-as and renamed the document and it saved without issue.

Good luck!

This is really annoying I purchased this online Adobe program with the main purpose of combining .pdfs into one merged .pdfs as that's how I have to send my files to my clients.  I used the desktop version for years with no problem and switched to the online version at the end of last year.  Now I am constantly getting these error messages no matter what .pdfs I am trying to combine.  I've tried eliminating various .pdfs from the combining to see if certain ones were the culprits but that's not the case.  The .pdfs we use come from all types of various programs we use in our business.  At this point I am ready to cancel this whole thing and use a generic .pdf combiner I can find on the internet.

Can we get any update from someone at Adobe on this issue?  Please?

Hi Tony,

We are still looking into the issue. If fixed internally it might be implemented in our next quarterly release.

Does anyone know if this problem has been resolved with their most recent update?

11.0.10 is still the most recent release listed on Adobe's site, which is the version that this problem is related to.

I am having the exact same issues. My files are not corrupt and it is with every pdf document I have saved on my computer that I tried working with. I am using windows 7 and my biggest issue is with the emails I receive with pdf attachments. After opening emails in outlook I have no options to save the files and thus I have to keep returning to my emails with no way of attaching these files for my own use.

Hey david m12254259,

If you right click on the file in your email without opening it, you can probably save it that way.  It worked for us.  You just can't save it if you open it first.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, this does work! It will suffice until Adobe figures out their issues. I spent 7 hours trying to install, uninstall, clean and everything else I could think of and the Adobe crew has known about this for several days and has neglected to post anything. Not very nice!

Same problem...Our IBM Unix system uses a program called VSIFax (Esker) to create PDF documents such as invoices.  Users that have updated to Acrobat version 11.0.10 can open the PDF but then when trying to save the document the get a message "This document could not be saved.  There was a problem reading this document (21)."  The problem is only occuring with updated version 11.0.10 (11.0.9 works fine).

We are facing the same problem with version 11.0.10  We see the problem when the AX report contain a bmp image.

I think you are right, but we have to include the company logo.

Unfortunately I think AX converts other types of images to bmp, when it prints the PDF.

Hi,

I request you to share the screenshot of the error you are receiving.

Also, please let us know if you are facing similar issue with multiple documents.

Yes, we have it on multiple documents. As mentioned, they are reports that are generated from Microsoft Dynamcs AX. I have found out that not all reports get the error. PDFs from Office or  Autodesk AutoCAD do not get the error.

These are the errors it displays:
