AE CC 2018 ridiculously slow

Seriously, what is wrong with AE CC 2018!?

I'm on an absolute beast of a workstation, a HP Z840 with 128 GB RAM, dual Titan X:s and so forth, but I can't even preview a simple text animation!

It takes forever to preview, and playback tops out at about 10 fps... I've got nothing in the timeline but animated text, no other graphics, no video, nothing.

And it's not only the preview that's messed up, the entire interface is laggy, when I move the cursor in the timeline sometimes it takes like a second for it to catch up.

Everything I try to do, import a file, keyframe an object, add an effect to something, and so on, takes forever.

I've done restarts, checked nvidia drivers, purged all memory and disk cache, cleaned database an cache, everything you could ever think of, but it's still painfully slow.

I never had these problems in cc 2017, it ran like a dream.

I'm at a point where it is virtually imposible to work, and it's making me a bit frustrated to say the least.

Don't tell me I have to downgrade to be able to work, that would just be, well, silly.

Why on earth would anybody release a version this unstable?

February and I decided to finally update to CC 2019 and I literally have the same issues you described a year later.

7980XE / 32GB RAM / GTX 1080 TI / Samsung 512GB 970 Pro

My rigs not the beefiest but geez, I would think it could easily keep up.

If anyone has any solutions yet I'm all ears.

I'm just trying to preview very simple files in an After Effects tutorial and the preview slows to a crawl after the first 1-2 seconds.

After Effects CC 2018 Essential Training: The Basics

Dell XPS

Intel Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz

24Gb RAM

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745

Windows 8.1 Pro

4k monitor + Cintiq 21ux

I know this isn't a "workhorse" machine, but it should be able to preview simple 10 second files without basically crashing.

Even running previews of the sample files from this tutorial at 1/4 resolution or worse have it slowing to a crawl after the 1 second mark.

It is completely unusable in this condition

Similar performance issues here. Simple HD 30fps comp with audio (a couple of HD mp4s with PNGs animated over them as part of an interface mock-up, some drop shadows, no other effects, no 3D, no particles, no plug-ins, no blending, no keying):

Will NOT preview in real time on:

HP Z840

2 x Xeon 8 core 3.2GHz

32Gb RAM

GTX 980Ti & Quadro K4200

Windows 10

4k monitor

Runs perfectly on:

15-inch MacBook Pro

2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7

16GB RAM

Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB memory

Same 4k monitor in addition to built in display.

Both machines have the latest version of AE as of 31 Jan 2019.

I was running 4k comps on the MacBook and it was fine. On the PC After Effects is awful, the interface is laggy and playback is terrible.

I'd really like Adobe to acknowledge the issue and share their plan for addressing it.

Same problem here!!!!

Is imposible to even use the interface of after effects, so laggy, no previews, etc

My spects are

NVIDIA GTX 960M 4GBRAM

16GB RAM

Intel Core i7 6700HQ CPU@2.6GHz 2.6GHz

Why does adobe don´t say anything about it???

So, adobe team, this is the problem this guy upload a video (OF THE PROBLEM, NOT THE FIX) but this is the problem I assume everybody has here!!!

After Effects CC 2018 PREVIEW LAG SLOW FPS FIX - YouTube

The most strage thing is Ive tryed to other versions of After effects, (2015,2017,2019) and the same problem is happening !!! So I dont know how but some upload just dont removed, I cannot use any version of After effects at all.

This is crap!

Haha just discovered this threat tonight. Newly updated AE. Adobe. Restarting clients project in CS6 then learning crash course in Davinci Fusion.

Oh, wow. I'm so glad I've found this thread. I just purchased a £5K iMac Pro to try and resolve this issue that I have spend basically the past week trying to fix, and After Effects is still running as painful slow! I have missed a number of client deadline because of it.

Have adobe staff even formally responded to this thread yet?!

Your best option is to install the 2017 version of AE, I'm using 14.2.1 on my 5k Retina iMac and it runs fairly well, at least well enough for me to get actual work done. Now had I been able to actually BUY this version of AE, I could have avoided all this hell and saved a ton of money, because nothing, and I mean nothing else they have added to the overall entire suite has improved or changed my workflow. In fact they have succeeded mostly in hampering my workflow by removing legacy codecs and continually releasing unstable updates.

So here's a hearty F.U. to Adobe's monopoly, as well as to their broken promises and continual extortion. I love your tools (when they function), but I hate your ethics.

I'm also chiming in here because of how annoying it is.

Windows 10

Intel i9-9900k 8-core

32GB RAM

GeForce 970ti

All I was doing was trying to trim and crop a 1080p video and it was basically impossible. It would've been faster to print out every frame, cut the paper manually, staple it, make a flipbook, and video tape that.

The 2018CC is unusable on what I consider to be great hardware. I understand some people here have beefier machines than me, but the 9900k 8core + 32gb should be more than enough to trim an 1080p video without waiting multiple seconds at A THIRD (NOT FULL) per frame.

I just downgraded to 2014 and am hoping that will make it better. I read that worked for some people in here.

I could be stating the obvious (sorry if so!) but have you tried switching the monitor view-port to 'Fast Draft'? We shouldn't have to but I find it makes a huge difference when working in in 2015-2018, not ideal for roto but it might be enough to get the job done? ...and yes 2014 is awesome, still is and I wish they would go back to that architecture.

I managed to sort out my problem by turning of Guides & Rulers.

Go to composition settings and hit the 3D rendering tab and set the RENDERER pull-down menu to CLASSIC 3D. Stay away from Ray-Traced 3D unless you need it for making your text layers extrude in 3D.

I remember I had problems with typefaces. Some formats (I thins it where old fashioned PS Type1 or Type 3 fonts) of typefaces rendered extremely slow. I converted those to TrueType and gained back the render speed.
