Question

After Effects freezes Everything except for After effects itself.

Hi there,

When i'm using after effects i've ran into this problem constantly.

What's happening is that whenever i've spend some time in an after effects project everything every becomes unclickable but after effects itself.

I can't press any buttons in the taskbar, I can't use any other programs, I even can't close after effects.

The only thing I can so is use my keyboard to navigate my computer. So every time I save the project now and I restart my PC to close after effects down.

Anyone ever had this problem before?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi bjornz,

Sorry for the issue. I understand you are getting issues with the entire system freezing while using After Effects. Along with the graphics card, performance can get affected by the processor and the space available on your hard drive for processing.

    • Please provide the information as Mylenium as asked.
    • Also, we'll need information about the project that you are editing.
    • Have you tried a new project with different media?
    • Does that bring any change?

Let us know. We're here to help.

    Thanks,

    Shivangi

Excuse my late reaction and the missing info in the first post.

I was on a tight deadline and I had to find a solution to fix it so I decided to just use my laptop instead.

Anyhow, the problem continues to appear, let me give you my Specs. (bottom of the post)

I don't really know how much info there is needed for you to have a clear idea so if I'm missing anything let me know.

The project I'm editing doesn't really affect the problem, it even happens when I just have AE running idle with an empty project.

It happens at random too, sometimes it happens within 2 minutes, sometimes it happens in 10 to 15 minutes.

I can still use my keyboard to navigate some programs like chrome or windows explorer. I can't click anything in the taskbar or in any other programs. I have to use Windows key + X to navigate to restart and after that it's fine again. It's not like a hard freeze that needs a hard reset. Honestly I don't really know what to do anymore. I have a pretty decent Workstation that shouldn't have any problems running AE.

I updated my graphic cards driver to the latest version and I reinstalled AE a couple of times, alas, nothing changes.

I allocated enough memory to AE for it being able to run properly, so that shouldn't really be a problem as well.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for sharing the information.

I appreciate the steps that you have done to make it work.

Have you considered resetting the preferences and cleaning media cache. It will make the settings default.

You may refer to this article: Setting preferences in After Effects

Test the issue with a new project and let me know if it brings any change.

You have not provided any exact system info nor any other details, so we honestly can't know what is going on. From graphics driver issues to your system simply running out of memory this could be anything. You need to provide more details.
