That is to be expected. AE is barely multithreaded and doesn't do much parallel processing plus it's easy enougth to nix any such optimizations by constructing complex projects with nested compositions and using certain effects. Perfectly normal I suggest you research the various "How to optimize performance in AE" and similar threads here and on the Internet in general to educate yourself about how AE actually "ticks" and how to streamline your workflows.
