Low memory warning banner in After Effects 22.6

Hello, I'm having problems, something related to RAM because a notification appears saying that, but I've already allocated all the RAM of the MAC to the after and it still appears, I can't play the preview

I've tried clearing cache, changing the renderer, but nothing works

Can someone help me?

Hi all,

A fix for this issue is available in After Effects 23.0, which was released earlier today.

Thanks,

Rameez

Hi! I just had to downgrade to 22.4 because of the "5 frames preview error". I had it in the 22.5 and still happening in 22.6. Even a 2 simple shapes with positon animation (3s) the new orange memory bar appears. Downgrading to 22.4 and all works fine (even a lot of layers). Please, correct this bug because It is impossible to work this way. (iMac 27 i7, 24 gb RAM. macOS Monterey 12.5.1)

Hi @xbeiro

I discussed with some of the After Effects engineers on this. We want to investigate and know why this is happening. Can you help us with the following information?

  • How much memory is allocated to After Effects?
  • What's the complexity of your project? Is your comp resolution 4K?
  • Are there any other Adobe or non-Adobe apps running in the background?
  • Do you have third-party plugins for After Effects? If so, which ones?

Let me know.

Hi, thanks for answer so quickly. I'll try to respond your questions:

  • How much memory is allocated to After Effects? 18Gb of 24
  • What's the complexity of your project? Is your comp resolution 4K? Yes, 4K. The project It is heavy with some big png's and shape layers but most of the comps don't have big effects. At first I thought that the comps was too big for my computer, but I restarted the computer, put the resolution and previews to the minimun... but nothing works. Then I even solo a couple of layers (2 basic squares with 7px stroke) with basic postion animation adn the outcome was the same. Happens with all kind of comps and layers. But in 22.4 works fine.
  • Are there any other Adobe or non-Adobe apps running in the background? At first yes, but closing all and restart was thr firts thing I did. And didn't work
  • Do you have third-party plugins for After Effects? If so, which ones? In my workspace configuration I have the panels of Flow, Duik, Move anchor point, Buttcapper, Limbre, Overlord and Fx Console. But in this project I think I only used Flow, Move Anchor and Buttcapper (the basic ones for speed up the workflow).

I hope this info help you find the problem 🙂

Since the update previews are horrible, with a "Low memory warning" message in the same files I was working on just a few days ago. And AE uses only 10% of allowed memory. I'm on Macbook Pro M1, with the latest OSX.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing poor performance.

Could you share more details about the source footage settings (frame size, frame rate, color depth), the project settings (Color Space, Bits Per Channel), and the Composition settings (Comp Size, Frame Rate, Resolution while working)?

Are you running the Apple Silicon native version or running it using Rosetta?

Also, what are you seeing when you use the Composition Profiler?

I find the MacBook Pro M1 13-inch to be very responsive working at 3840-by-2160 at 23.976 or 29.97 at Quarter resolution when using slow to render effects like CC Light Burst and the MacBook Pro M1 Max to be... well... extermely responsive for 3840-by-2160 work.

Hi Warren, thanks for your reply. Here are the details:

Project settings:

Workspace: none

Depth: 16bit

Comp settings:

1080x1080

30fps

Res: even 1/4 wasn't previewed well

8 seconds long

Footage:

Illustrator file imported as a comp, 20 layers altogether.

I use Overlord and Animation Composer 3. (Overlord didn't work with the AE)

I was running it on Apple Silicon native version.

As you can see this is a fairly simple project, and yet memory warning was all over the place. This type of project you can easily run on your smartwatch 🙂 The same thing happened with any other project I opened. THEN I installed 22.4.0 and everything works perfectly, as before for every project. Previews are in Full and without hiccups or any warning messages. So there is something about 22.6. that was messed up. I see today is a new patch for AE. Will try that to see if there are any improvements, but I'm getting tired of paying for beta-testing something that should be stable.

It is also best to allocate an even multiple of 4 GB of ram to other applications on the Preferences/Memory and Performance section.

Today my Mac Mini M1 with 16GBs has decided not to preview video or audio. Well, it actually does, it's just like 5 frame glitch over, and over, and over.

Has worked decently for the last 8 months.

The activity monitor shows AE only using 2GB when i'm trying to preview in AE and in preference i've set up 12GB just for AE.

Uninstalled, re-installed.

Up to date on mac and adobe versions.

Can't find any viruses.

Premiere works fine.

Any help would be most appreciated 🙂

If you have allocated 4 GB for other apps in Preferences/Memory and Performance, and you don't have many other apps running, you might try trashing your preferences. Close AE. Open AE while holding down Shift + Alt/Option + Ctrl/Cmnd. When the option is given, trash your preferences.

I recently had the same problem with my M-1 Macbook Pro. I used the General Preferences page to show the Preferences file in the Finder, the closed AE, renamed the original, then opened AE and let it build the defaults. Then I updated all of the settings on every page so they matched my standard setup, and AE ran just fine. I renamed the files again to return to the original Preferences file by renaming, and the problem appeared again. I could not find any differences in the settings, but the corrupted Preferences file had fouled up something somewhere. Now everything is running fine.

Allocating all your RAM is likely the problem.   Try leaving 1/4 of your systems total RAM for "other apps"  like your operating system.
