Prores4444 + Alpha portrait formats compressed Problem

Recently, I've been rendering portrait formats compressed. However, this only happens when I select Prores4444 + Alpha from output format. Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

When I render "uncompressed" everything is ok.

Same problem on Mac M1 Max  and Intel. Mac os 12.3.1 / After Effects 22.4.0

This bug has been reported on the Adobe After Effects User-Voice pages.

It can be found here:

Here is the important response from After Effects Quality Engineering regarding this issue:

  • Paul Uusitalo (AE Quality Engineering) commented Qua ·   ·  Thank you for reporting this Michele!

What you have hit here is a bug in our ProRes Hardware Accelerated encoding. We are actively working on a fix for this.

In the meantime, the workaround for the issue is to disable "Enable ProRes hardware accelerated encoding, if available" in AE's Output Preferences.

I'm experiencing the same issue - haven't been able to successfully render a prores 4444 with alpha out of After Effects that isn't a standard 16x9 frame for months. The resulting render either ends up squashed like what you're showing here, or the file is just corrupt (generic QuickTime icon in the Finder, no usable data embedded).

Same experience on both an Intel-powered iMac Pro and an M1-powered Mac Studio.

Sorry about the issue. Could you share your sequence and render settings? Which version of After Effects are you currently using? Are you on a Windows or a Mac system?

It is a problem with the latest version. Problem seems to be the same on Mac and PC. I use AE 2021 for rendering

Make sure in the Output Module settings that when choosing Apple ProRes 4444 the Pixel Aspect Ratio is square (1.0) and not rectangular (custom). Also, make sure the Resize checkbox is unchecked.

Sorry for the poor experience. Can you please share your sequence and export settings so we could replicate this issue on our end?
