Why Can’t I Paste Cuts from Premiere into After Effects?

I routinely copy clips from my Premiere timeline and paste them into my After Effects compositions. AE usually accepts them and all the effects keyframes, etc., intact so they appear just as they did in Premiere.

But, now, for some reason I can’t figure out, AE won’t allow me to paste the clips into my composition at all. Note that I am using the same AE project file I have previously pasted clips into before.

What is happening? Is there some setting that I accidentally changed?

Hi all,

This issue has been fixed in After Effects 18.4.1.

AE 23.6.2 Not working

Premiere 24.6.4

Not used AE in a while.  I really don't want to update I am in the middele of projects and more often than not have issues when updating software and then everyone here says "well you shouldnt update mid project" but... if I don't update mid project, I can't finish the project.. which puts me at risk of being taken offline.

Any suggestions how such a basic feature can become corrupt?

Hi there,

Can you share more details? Are you unable to copy and paste from Premiere Pro or any app? Are you on MacOS or Windows? If you're not able to make any progress without updating, then I'd suggest updating the app. Keep a backup of your project, and do not remove the 23.X version. You can install the latest version as a separate install.

Note: If you remove the 23.X version, you won't be able to install it again.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Nishu

I'm on after effects 22.4.1 and it still doesnt work! I need to reboot the entire machine for it to work once or twice, before it fails again. WTF?

For anyone that runs into this... What I experienced is that it is still a problem when there is a mismatch between versions of Premiere and AE. So check that first. It might work between minor revisions, not sure. But copy/paste clips from the ppro timeline to ae wasn't working for, and I realized I was using 2023 premiere and 2022 AE. Updated AE and it now works. Pretty dumb but is what it is.

The issue is continuing to happen. Any more advice (before, hopefully, Adobe releases a new update that resolves the issue)?

Hi there!

Sorry about the experience. We're aware of the issue and working on it. Currently, we don't have a workaround on this.

I hope we'll fix this soon.

Thanks,

Kartika

Thanks, Kartika.

Well, I think this issue certainly qualifies as a good reason for Adobe to issue that next update as quickly as possible.

I'm having the same problem. It goes beyond just the video clips and keyframes for me. I'm also not able to paste text from outside sources. I do this every day and it stopped working the day I updated.

Same for me, MK. It seems AE became debilitated when I updated to the current version (18.4.0). To judge from the number of people having this issue, it seems to be a bug with the current version of AE.

Hi The Mavo,

Sorry for your issue.

Could you test if you're able to paste from any other application or it's just the Premiere Pro? Could you share a screen recording of the issue?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hello, Nishu. Following your request, I just copied different types of content from various applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, TextEdit, Word), then tried to paste them into After Effects. AE will not paste any of them. It doesn’t even recognize that anything is in the clipboard to be pasted. The Paste command in the Edit menu of AE is grayed-out.

I have the same problem.

I can't paste audio or video from Premiere into my composition.

After the last update of version 18.4.0

Start by checking your hardware acceleration stuff and update your graphics driver if necessary. This stuff clearly has somehow been affected in the latest builds and your inability to paste content could simply relate to AE not knowing how to decode it because of these issues. Also verify folder permissions and user privileges. Problems with caches and temp files could be at play here just as well. Anything else will require more info liek what actual formats are used, comp/ sequence settings, system info and so on.
