Bridge CS5 Won't Open

I just installed the Photoshop CS5 Production Premium suite on my Win 7 system.

I have 8GB RAM, 2.60 GHz processor, 64-bit operating system.

Photoshop works fine. However, Bridge does not open. When I click either File>Browse in Bridge, or click the BR icon, I see a momentary spinning circle timer, then nothing. While the little circle is spinning, the red X in the upper right hand corner of the Photoshop window turns gray.

I called Adobe and spent nearly two hours with a tech to solve this problem. The solution he came up with is not satisfactory, and I was wondering if anyone else had an idea.

We tried to reset Bridge using the CTR while opening Bridge and checking the three options, then restarting Photoshop.

We reinstalled Photoshop from the discs.

Finally, we set up a new user account on my computer. If I open Photoshop in the second user account, I can open Bridge. However, since all of my thousands of photos are saved in files in my first user account, I cannot save any photos to these files if I am in the second account. Also, I cannot browse my photo files, as they are in the first user account.

Obviously, I can't operate this way. Does anyone have a fix or an idea of what to do?

OK, I started this thread last August, and I'm back.  Bridge now crashes.

I thought my problem was solved. Last time, I would click on the icon and just get the twirling timer circle momentarily, then nothing. Then one day Bridge just started working.

Now, Bridge starts to open, I get a popup window over it asking if I would like to allow ffdshow (this once, always, never) and no matter which choice I make, the popup window closes- and Bridge crashes.

Mini Bridge opens, but does not load. It says "Waiting for Bridge CS5".

    This is the 64-bit CS5.

If I try to open Bridge in 32-bit, I get the twirling timer circle briefly, then nothing.

I am completely up to date with Photoshop CS5 updates.

I did, however, just install another photo editing program called PhotoDirector 2011 Beta.

Any ideas? Sure hope Chenglong is still monitoring this thread! :-)

well I don't think you have a Bridge issue

check and see what video codec packages you have installed/running

ffdshow is a video codec installed with K_lite and some other packs, you need to disable that ffdshow from auto starting

if you run a few videos it makes huge files and never shuts down - in the alt control delete (task  manager)  look in running processes and see if you see multiple svchost running. one or two is normal

Many running will overload your memory and Bridge needs a lot of memory to read your files when it opens

also try opening a folder with fewer images first- if you open a huge folder first it does take long to load (drag folder to Bridge icon)

I am talking PC of course and I dont run 64 so someone lese may have a better suggestion

I think you may be on to something, Kat Woman.

    Yes, I am on a PC (Win7 64-bit)

Yes, I know I have ffdshow enabled (that was the last selection I made, to have it run "always".

Yes, I have 13 instances of svchost running right now.

Yes, the first folder that I tried to open was a big one.

I am researching how to turn off ffdshow auto tuning.

And how do I know which svchost instances to turn off?

Bridge is actually opening for me now, though at times when I try to open a large folder, it crashes. So it's definitely a memory issue. Though I have 8Gb on this machine. :-)

    Thanks for your help!

I have the new Imac I have the same problem Camera Raw cycles but does not open-- But strangely I can open the mini-bridge and use that to open files in camera raw--  Has anyone tried that route?

What did you do before Camera Raw cycles?  Can your Bridge launch normally and thumbnails display?

    Thanks,

Bridge will not cycle itself, it appears then disappears, I have never used mini bridge, was just experimenting.

But, it works fine.......  Let me know if you hear of anything positive-- I hope that everyone reads this.....

Adobe engineer, Chenglong, worked with my computer last night for over 2 hrs to no avail. I have since sent him some files to work with and hopefully he can make some since out of this so we can all find a solution.

    Hi CutY:

the root causes of the issue are different, although the behavior is quite same. and Bridge had dependencies on different tech or components, so we need to work out 1 by 1.

and for Ron's issue, there is quick and easy fix that is removing the nested folder for workspace folder in user data folder.

we are still working with you guys on different scenarios.

thanks for your understanding and support!

    nested into where?

remove the folder and delete it? or put it someplace else?

    Dear users,

Today, I connected with a customer(Barry) for this issue. And we found the root cause in his machine. This is caused by there has a folder under the workspaces folder in Bridge user data folder. So can those who still can’t launch Bridge check your Bridge Workspaces folder to see if your issue is same as Barry’s? Below is a instruction for how to do this.

    1) Go to folder C:\Users\[your account]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5\Workspaces

    2) Check if there has any folder here.

    3) If there are some folders, delete all of them.

    4) Attempt to launch Bridge.

If above can fix your issue, please reply in this thread. I want see how many people have same issue.

    Thanks

Success!!!!! Chenglong with Adobe support fixed my Bridge CS5 problem. My problem may not be exactly the same as yours but I know that many of you did have the same exact issue. I think they have figured out how to fix the problem...at least they did for me.

Chenglong knew how to find the problem and as a Bridge engineer I have nothing but good things to say about his work. Having said that I am disappointed that Adobe took so long to address the issue when Chenglong found and fixed the problem in just a little over an hour.

I do not have the computer software skills to fix this problem on my own. I allowed Chenglong to remotely fix the problem in my computer. He did it useing a shared screen program so I could see what he was doing as he worked. Some of you  "sufferers" I'm sure have the knowledge and expertise to use the information that Chenglong posted in the above reply but many of you are like me and do NOT have this expertise. I would never have tried or even know where to look for this problem.

Adobe, do not just post a technical "how to" and expect users like me to fix the problem on their own. This problem came with the software when I PURCHASED it so please help those like me who think your software is terrific, enjoy using it but are not computer engineers.

Again THANK YOU Chenglong for a job WELL DONE!!!!

I hope this resolution is applicable for all the rest of you CS5 users who are having the same issue.

    Hi Barry, et.al.

I tried Chenlong's resolution as well, but for me there is no success...

yet. We are scheduled to meet online at the end of the workday here (west

coast) and hopefully there will be some resolution. I also talked with Sumit

Singh of Tech Support earlier in the week and after about two hours he was

of the opinion that Adobe Switchboard is not executing when you call Bridge.

He was going to research that issue and get back to me.

So it seems that contacting Adobe corporate has been helpful. I emailed John

Loiacono, the Adobe VP ultimately responsible for the Creative Suites

products and also left a voicemail for the National Manager, Technical

Support. I did not hear back from either one, but suddenly two tech support

    people are working on this.

I had this same problem but I think I have resolved it. In the Windows logsif indicated that the DLL SCCore.dll was at least part of the problem. I've run into this sort of error before when developing my own DLLs and it is usually caused be a mismatched DLL (the exe is trying to use a different version of the DLL). So I looked through my Photoshop folder and found the same file which was the same size but a different date. I renamed the SCCore.dll file in the Bridge folder, so that I had a backup, and then copied the SCCore.dll from the Photoshop folder into the Bridge folder. Bridge now works just fine. I think Adobe forgot to update the file in the Bridge folder.

Hopefully this will help others out as well.

By the way, I had the same issue with InDesign and following this same procedure also fixed InDesign.

    Cheers!

Wow...that is great but it sounds really complicated???? I am technical but know nothing about program files.

Is there a way you could explain it in a "fixing Bridge CS5 for Dummies" version??? I can follow directions very well.

    Thanks!

Sure. Sorry I should have given more details.

First, the files I am referring to are found in the install directory of the 32

bit installation. This is usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe for 64 bit Win7

and C:\Program Files\Adobe for 32 bit installs. Inside this folder is a

directory for each installed Adobe program, i.e. Bridge, Photoshop, etc.

Ok, so all you have to do is follow these steps:

    1) Inside the Bridge folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5" for

64 bit installs) you will find the file SCCore.dll. Rename this to something

else (I just renamed it to SCCore_old.dll). This is just a precaution so that if

something goes wrong you can get the original file back.

    2) Go to the Photoshop directory ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop

CS5" for 64 bit install) and find the same file (SCCore.dll). Right click on it

    and choose "Copy".

    3) Now go back to the Bridge folder and right-click on an empty area of the

    folder and chose "Paste".

    4) If you have InDesign or other Adobe programs that are not working you can

repeat these steps for them also.

That should do it. For me Bridge ran just fine and it seems to still be working.

I suspect that in an Adobe update the file was either not updated correctly or

for some reason Win7 wouldn't allow it to copied over (maybe a rights issue or

maybe it was in use at the time).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Cheers,

    -Brent

I've had this problem for years now (early CS4) and the best solution I've come up with is this:   disable my display driver...I take whatever is manageing my graphics (in the most current occurence two Nvidia 470's) and disable them, restart and leave the driver off- boom everything runs on my 800 by 600 or whatever wonky driverless display.  I go back to my 4 display unit and it fails.  By the way, if you don't mind check and see if you can run illustrator.  (most can't)

My agency pays for tech support that supposedly feature former Adobe engineers and I've talked to all of Adobe tech support.  Total timed logged for no solution is in excess of forty hours of installing and uninstalling etc while on the phone with someone who has the intelligence of a frog!  I thought I had it licked for the past year or so but a defective motherboard had to be replaced last week and came in tonight and back to square zero-    no bridge, no illustrator, no indesign.

If any Adobe folks (I could think of stronger knowledge for their personell right now) the problem DOES revolve around this display issue.

just went down to two displays and bridge opened without restarting.  so did illustrator.    added displays back and things work fine again.  hrmmm...

but try to open same in Bridge, gets same error

also cannot access Creative Suite preferences

I can  upload images but without being able to process images many at a time it is totally USELESS to me

I ma using a crazy workaround

If I open files in CS3 Bridge ACR-then make adjustment to get the little symbol on them

I can then go back to Bridge in CS5, choose multiple images to batch them but they open in PS CS5 not Bridge

at least this way I can use ACR 6.3 and not be limited to 4.3 or whatever CS3 had

My problem with this issue is, for one, I have slideshows for websites I manage that I need to update on a regular basis. Since they took that feature out of Photoshop and moved it to bridge I am really stuck if I cannot use bridge. I also have the style set ups for these slideshows saved to bridge. Recreating these will take a good amount of time. I am not sure where these settings are stored but I am afraid I may have blew them away when I attempted to reset the preferences.

Oh yeah, I also cannot preview all my camera raw images. I have to go through and open them one at a time to see what they are. The current set up has us very dependent on Bridge. I really need an answer to the problem.

Are there any Adobe moderators out there who can respond to this issue?

I am having a similar problem. When I first installed the CS5 Design Premium Suite on my Windows 7 I kept having Bridge stop working as soon as it started up. I found the answer to my  problems here. By resetting the preferences when I started up I was able to have bridge run normally.

Fast forword to today when I updated my Firefox browser. Suddenly the problem of Bridge crashing on startup every time started once again. I tried resetting the preferences but this time it does not work. I even totally removed firefox and still have the same issue.

I am not sure where to go from here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Cathy-

Thanks for your email. Just spent four hours with tech support in India.

They blew away the old install, downloaded a new set of files, completely

reinstalled Design Premium... end result: Bridge still will not launch. They

have kicked my problem up to the next level. We'll see what happens. They

suggested that it might take four or five days before someone gets around

it. This is obviously not the first time this problem has occurred (over

1400 views of this topic), yet Adobe Support has been curiously silent about

the problem and a suggested fix.

I have no suggestions for you at this time. However, I'll let you know what

transpired after the next round of "support."

    Ron,

One curious thing about this problem is in many cases a second user can be created with access to CS5 and Bridge and it will work properly for that user????

For me I created a second user on my computer and CS5 and Bridge work like a champ. Opens VERY fast and works fine BUT that means I have to somehow transfer everything to the new user to have access to the files.

I would be curious to see if you could create a new user account on your machine and see if CS5 and Bridge work then????

Just an idea, not a fix to the problem.
