SCORM score resets to zero if a user re-attempts (even accidently) - CANVAS LMS

I have a SCORM package developed in Captivate. Everything works as planned but we recently found that if a user re-attempts the score resets to Zero. It doesn't preserve the previous attempt as with the normal quizzes (built-in).

I think "normal quizzes" refers to quizzes created in the LMS's own quiz creation tools.  They would not be following SCORM rules.

Totally agree with Rod's complete answer. I just wonder what you mean by '....as with the normal quizzes'? It is clear that you don't point to a Captivate quiz, but what do you mean exactly? Probably the built-in quizzes in the LMS.

This will depend on your LMS.  A SCORM module does not "remember" anything when it is closed down.  It's the LMS that stores user interaction data, not the SCORM module.

If you have LMS Resume Data bookmarking turned on in your Captivate LMS Advanced settings, then the SCORM module will make data about the user's session available to the LMS. If the LMS stores this data, then if the user abandons the session before completion, that data can be retrieved (from the LMS database) when the user reopens the same module.

Now the important thing to remember about this is that Resume Data is only going to be retrieved if the user abandons mid-session before completing the module.  If they DO complete the module then it depends on the way your LMS is set up as to what happens if the user happens to reopen the same module again AFTER completing it.  Not all LMSs handle this situation the same way.

Some LMSs feel that any reopening of the completed module represents a reattempt and will delete the user's previous completion or Pass/Fail score.  Some LMSs offer an option to allow reopening the module just to look at the content, but some don't.

Bottom liine: You need to check with your LMS vendor about what options are available in Canvas LMS in this area.  In some cases, even with very expensive LMS products, the only way to prevent the user's score from being wiped out on reopening the module is to lock them out of it on completion.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Totally agree. It is an issue on the LMS side and CANVAS LMS doesn't seem to have a solution or even some work around it. I can see other people/organizations have same issue since 2019. I will definitley contact CANVAS support to find out if they have any future plans to fix this.
