Cannot find Digital Editions Folder

Whenever I try to open the program, I get the message "Cannot find Digital Editions Folder". The program appears to be open to me, however it is completely unusable. My e-books appear as blank gray books, and I can't open them or read them. I've un-installed and installed the program 3 times. Someone please help! I want to read my books.

ADE has been around for a long time.. another very sick joke of Adobe, that serve no function whatsoever except to torture users. Why does it exist?

My approach to this 4-year-old problem was clear almost a year ago.  I sold my Sony Reader and purged my system of all Adobe software.

Delisting myself from this forum is a typical Adobe issue - there appears to be no means to get the unsubscribe to work and no support available to solve the problem.

Anyone know how to unsubscribe to this thread?

So, Adobe, four years later and we still are having this problem. Really? I think I've tried everything on this forum, and still it doesn't work. Phooey. I know it's because I moved my documents folder. But darn it, I needed room on C:. And support ignores you. I am an unhappy camper. After the thousands of dollars I have spent on Adobe software, you would think they would fix the problem. But I guess I'll just have to live without it on my PC, it works just fine on my smartphone with Overdrive Media Console, and Nook.

I know what I'd do, I'd create a My Documents folder on Drive C:\ with a My

Digital Editions folder inside just for books and forget the problem. Adobe

has made up their mind to ignore us & the problem. An old saying applies,

    "If you can't beat'em join'em"......

Thanks for responding.  Wendy's solution (see above) worked for me, so I didn't need to try yours.

Does anyone know why Adobe seems so uninterested in this?  eReaders appear to be the coming thing.  I'd think Adobe would want their product to work?!?

Adobe cannot support niche products, like windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9.  Crazy!

With freeware you get what you pay for.  Looks like the best plan is to use an eReader that does not require Adobe

I was also having this problem after a change to the network drive path to which my Documents folder pointed.

Lee555551 posted a potential solution way back: editing the registry by checking that HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer \Shell Folders\Personal points to C (or the appropropriate drive). This did not work for me till I stumbled upon this Microsoft support page (ironically while trying to solve a similar problem with Adobe Reader):

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886549

where it specifies checking these two paths:

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

DE now works for me. The MS support page includes a link to an automatic fix if you are not comfortable manually editing your registry.

Thanks for responding, Wendy.  'Preciate it.

That worked!!!  Thank you very much, Wendy.

Here we are in June 2011 and this problem still exists.  I get that error. I've tried all the work-arounds in this forum with no positive results.

    I use a PC running Windows 7.

    Now what?

    Please and thank you.

By the way, after all these years, shouldn't this be included in Adobe's "Known Issues" list for this product?

    June 14, 2011

I don't know how it will work in Windows 7,but try a new useraccount specially for your e-reader, it might work! Success!

Thanks.  I'll try that and report the results here.  I'll try it the next time I feel like dealing with this.

    I found the perfect solution.

    1) Sold the Sony Reader,

    2) Purged my system of Adobe products,

    3) Bought a Kindle.

I no longer have problems with the Digital Editions folders.

I was having the same issue when downloading books from CBD.com.  "Could not find Digital Editions folder"  The problem was that I changed the path of my 'my docs' to a new location.

    Here was my solution...

In the start menu on the right side the 2nd item down should be 'documents.'  I had renamed this to something else but it didn't change the outcome of the solution so if you changed it don't worry.

Right click and go to properties

Under the location tab, put in C:\Users\books\Documents (make sure this folder exists)

I then tried to download my books and it installed correctly and asked for my adobe info and downloaded the books perfectly...

    I hope this helps someone.

    Have a Blessed night,

The very best solution for the buggy and not very useful Adobe Digital Editions is to  download the free Calibre ebook library/reader.

It can transform any ebook format from one format to another, including epub. Calibre has a great user friendly interface, downloads metadata and book covers from the Internet, and does everything else your heart could desire for maintaining and using your ebook library.

Calibre looks great, but it won't open DRM protected books, and it apparantly can't handle.ascm files.  Below is taken from Calibre FAQ page.  Without some software able and willing to open .ascm files and download the related .epub file you can't get far with DRM protected books.  My public library was the instigator of my attempted use of Adobe Digital Editions, and I have "advised" them of my opinion of this software.

I have now managed to get my Sony Reader software to process .ascm files, so I can borrow/purchase DRM-protected books and have Sony Reader download and store them in its "Reader Library".  So at this point I am able to avoid using Adobe Digital Editions by using the Sony Reader app.  But Calibre is of little added advantage, except if I find a need to convert ebook file formats.  For now, epub seems to be sufficient.

    ---- From Calibre FAQs-----------

Most purchased EPUB books have DRM. This prevents calibre from opening them. You can still use calibre to store and transfer them to your e-book reader. First, you must authorize your reader on a windows machine with Adobe Digital Editions. Once this is done, EPUB books transferred with calibre will work fine on your reader. When you purchase an epub book from a website, you will get an ”.acsm” file. This file should be opened with Adobe Digital Editions, which will then download the actual ”.epub” e-book. The e-book file will be stored in the folder “My Digital Editions”, from where you can add it to calibre.

I have been bitten by the same problem, and no solutions suggested above worked for me.

I'm running Vista, and had redirected "Documents" (Vista's version of "My Documents") to my E:/ drive.  Apparantly redirection of (My) Documents to a drive is too much for Adobe Digital Editions to deal with.  Creating new Documents folders in various places (such as E:/My Documents, etc) didn't help.

What DID WORK was to create a new user account on my computer, leaving the Documents folder for this user as created by Windows.  Then I logged in as this user and installed ADE.  It cleverly recognized the Documents folder, and is now working as desired.  Of course to use it I have to log on as the new user.

    Hope this approach helps someone.

Thanks very much for this new idea! I still think Aobe should fix the

problem, but for now this is a wonderful solution!
