I am unable to open newly purchased ebooks with Digital Editions. Windows XP, SP2, firewall and anti-virus turned off. Not behind any firewall.

Adobe DRM Error
System: 7
State: 4
Class: 5
Code: 31
Message: Your Adobe software could not be activated. HTTP error on Adobe DRM Activator request. Adobe DRM Activator error (client code 31; HTTP code 555).
Fault location: 5

What are my alternatives? I am unable to open these books in Adobe Reader 7.0 or (of course) 8.1.

You need to contact Adobe support. They are the only ones that can de-activate your old machines so you can activate new ones. Contact them at

I cannot open purchased engineering and standards books.
I get the following error information:

    Fault location: 7

    Exceeded number of permitted activations

    Thank you,

In Digital Editions 1.0, you cannot download your content to one PC and transfer it to another PC. That will be supported in 1.5, which will be released soon. So if you downloaded the book to computer A, you cannot move it to B and open it there. But you should not see this error.

Do the machines where you have seen this error have Reader or Acrobat installed? If so, have they been "activated"?

HTTP error on Adobe DRM Activator request.
Adobe DRM Activator error (client code 31; HTTP code 556).
    Fault location: 15
    --- end ---

    What could be wrong ?

I have emailed directly to Mr. White. If anyone else is seeing this error, please email me directly as we are very curious why a few people see this but almost all do not.

I keep getting the following error on my Adobe Digital Editions Software.

    Adobe DRM Error
    System: 8
    State: 4
    Class: 66
    Code: 77
    Message:

I haven't changed the time on my system so I'm not sure why I'm getting it. Can anyone help?

We have just tested this again as well as manually checking the server and it is working fine. So somehow the problem is on your end. I will contact you directly. Anyone else still seeing activation errors submit a support incident at www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/.

There are two separate problems on this thread. The code 31 errors were due to a server problem that has now been resolved. So those errors should not be seen. The other problem, error 77, is almost always because the user altered the clock on their computer, so the DRM sub system locks them out. Resetting your clock to the right time should fix that.
