Nook Glowlight Plus - Loan Token Update Failed.

I have had this nook for a year and read numerous library books on it, but yesterday I started getting a 'Loan token update failed' error when I tried to open a downloaded .epub book.

I have tried everything I can find on the internet as well as calling barnes and noble who was less than helpful.

I have tried...(muliple times for each of these)

  • Deauthorizing ADE
  • Going back to ADE 3.0
  • Unregister, deauthorizing my nook
  • Trying a different Adobe ID
  • Using a different computer

I've had every e-ink version of the nook, but I'm about to the point of buying a kindle (or course I'm blaming the nook, because although I love how this nook feels, I have had more problems with library books on this one than any of the ones before).

Thanks for any help anyone can offer -

I am having the same issue as of 10/15/21 - tried everything including installing ADE 3.0, transferring on 4 computers (MACs/PCs), deregistering and reregistering my nook, deauthorzing and reauthorizing numerous times, etc... so frustrated...

I am having the same issue and nothing has worked.  Contacted the library and B&N and per B&N they are working on a patch as it's a known issue.  They do not give a timeline for when it will be fixed.  Has anyone else had the workaround mentioned above of downloading ADE 3.0 work for them?

I tried downloading Adobe 3.0 as stated-in addition to many other suggestions of fixes. Nothing has helped. I’m waiting for the patch from B&N. Hopefully it will come sooner rather than later.

    It seems that this works:

    (1) deleting the 4.X version of Adobe Digital Editions on your computer and replacing that with ADE 3.0

    (2) deauthorizing your computer from ADE

    (3) Getting out of ADE

    (4) Reentering ADE and authorizing your computer with ADE (using the 3.0 version of ADE)

BTW, I own 3 different ebooks and was able to download, move to my Nook Glowlight+ and read said ebooks while in ADE 4.5.11 so, it appears to me that the problem of not being able to read (checked out) ebooks on a Nook Glowlight+ lies not with ADE as much as it lies with whatever vehicle your local public library uses to download ebooks (in my local libraty's case, it's Overdrive)...Nook Glowlight+ is old and some 'yokel' decided that Nook Glowlight + just wasn't worthy of beisn accessible to checked out ebook downloads, IMO.

Where did you find a copy of ADE 3.0 to download?

Ah.  I used the search engine Bing, typed in download ADE 3.0 and found a link which provided the download for 3.0.  Can't remember the exact link address.  Sorry.

I've just started having this same exact problem with my Nook Glowlight.  I was wondering if you ever came up with a solution to this problem. Thank you.

I just started having this same problem last night. It looks like at that time Barnes and noble had to push an update

According to the B&N forum linked earlier - Loan Token Update Failed | Nook Support Forums  - a beta program has been run and according to many of the people who tested it, it works. I couldn't find a way to successfully log in to the forum so I didn't try it myself. Anyways, the beta program has been pulled and they plan to issue the OTA program soon. Of course we don't know how soon soon is....

I know B&N says we will get a fix in the next century or 2, but I just got a new Kindle and checked out my first library book.

I selected Kindle as the book type from Overdrive, it sent me to an Amazon web page where I said which device I wanted to deliver the book to and like magic- library book on my kindle.  No plugging in my kindle, no navigating to the right folder on both my computer and my nook and then copying the book - only to get random errors.  Imagine that!  Easy as could be.

I saw that B&N has an update coming, but I also ordered a Kindle about 2 weeks ago when a whole batch of library books showed up in my Overdrive account. It's very convenient to get the library books over wifi. I don't travel with a laptop, but now I can get my library books on an eReader while traveling, instead of having to wait until I get home. To me, that's a great advantage of the Kindle. Other than the library books, I don't see that the Kindle is better than the Nook.

Barnes and Noble is beta testing a fix for the Glowlight Plus. Here is a link to the discussion board with more info. https://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/message/101619

    Hi all,

I received a NOOK Glowlight plus and was excited to start using it to read my Overdrive library books. I was immediately frustrated when I ran into the same problem y'all are having.

I found this post on Overdrive's site: OverDrive | Known issues with Sony Reader, NOOK Glow...

Hopefully, BN comes out with a firmware update soon. I'll have to keep using my 1st edition Nook until then.

So just lost my GLP on a plane but will probably buy another one simply because you can sideload apps. I suggest if you want to keep it and use it, follow these instructions and sideload Kindle app. Works well. https://www.google.com/amp/the-digital-reader.com/2015/12/15/nook-glowlight-plus-has-been-rooted/amp/

I have had the same problem and I bought my Glowlight Plus less than 3 weeks ago and haven't even had the chance to use it! B&N customer service pretty much just said that they have no idea when the problem will be fixed but to check back every couple days. It was beyond frustrating going though all the steps of ADE and the android file transfer (for mac users) multiple times trying to spot my error. Hopefully they have this up and running shortly or I too will be returning mine for a Kindle

Ouch, hope you have better customer service with B&N than I had.  Their 14 day policy will get you another GLP that won't work and a fake smile, but not a return.  If anyone here is following the threads you may have noticed that ADOBE is not very responsive.  And B&N blames ADE for implementing an incompatible change without warning.  Maybe so, maybe so.  But both are going to face contempt from affected customers.

Check the B&N threads for this error.  Evidently B&N has placed the blame ENTIRELY on ADE.  And ADE has not denied (or even responded?) their ownership of this problem.  A big SANFU for both companies.  This user is no longer compatible with either ADE or B&N.  How's the weather in India?
