Question

Issue with curved glass part

Hello, im quite new to 3D so please excuse my question. I am trying to render a multi-part assembly which overall is working well. However one of the parts is a curvered glass lens. I see artifacts when the light hits the lens at an angle, lots of triangles making up the curved lens. I have tried other materials but nothing seems to make a different.

I imported it in to Dimention as an .obj assembly as it seems to be the only option for importing multi-part assemblies. I have also tried importing the isolated part as an STL but that shows the same issue..

I have attached an image showing the problem.

Any ideas?

the triangles are on the model but the light is coming from your settings so your two basic options are adjust the light / camera angle or repair the model

Thank you. I have tried moving the light but its not enough.

When you say repair the model what do you mean? I have started with a STEP assembly that I have exported using FreeCAD to OBJ so it could be imported in to Dimention. I have tried increasing the resolution of the Mesh export which helped but only reduced the size of the triangular shapes. How would I go about "repairing" it?

Dimention really needs to support STEP assembly.

select the model [ temp remove any textures 1st] and ask Dimension to make a new UV map then put your materials and textures... most the time this work around will get you out of trouble but if not then the model needs to be remade
