Activation Error: SN not valid for this product

I've been reading support articles all over the place into the wee hours of the morning trying to troubleshoot this myself, and I haven't found anything that's worked. My last computer kicked the bucket; in attempting to reload CS5.5 Master Collection onto my new computer (Mac w/ Yosemite), I'm unable to get my products to launch.

The error doesn't seem to indicate that this is too many activations, even though I wasn't able to deactivate the last instance before my last laptop died.

Before resurrecting my serial from the backups, l installed a 30-day trial. Now when I attempt to input my key, it tells me the serial number is not valid for that product. Screenshot: http://tardis1.tinygrab.com/grabs/6111bb2e6d31485e251605fb9070536e31c30095e0.png

I tried uninstalling all the applications that were originally written by the trial, then installing fresh from the .dmg I made of the disc, which I can't find since we moved. The dmg installer accepted my serial, and went on its merry way writing new instances of the applications I selected. When I try to launch any of the newly installed applications; however, I'm again prompted for my serial. I enter the same serial as I provided the installer, but I get the not-valid-for-this-product error.

One help article talking about the CC licensing suggested checking the hosts file. Even though mine is different, I tried poking around in /private/etc anyway. It's just the initial comment and three lines for localhost, broadcasthost, and localhost respectively; there's no mention of adobe anywhere. I presume this doesn't apply to me.

I found "Error "The serial number is not valid for this product" | Creative Suite" and checked my language, but I can't believe it would have been any other language when I was using it successfully on my last machine.

I attempted offline activation because "Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CS5.5 and later, Acrobat DC" mentioned that offline activation works for CS5, CS5.5, and CS6 products, which encompasses me. I wasn't able to find where to locate or generate a request code, though. Dead end there.

Elsewhere on that same page (Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CS5.5 and later, Acrobat DC) though, were some tips that didn't apply to me. Does this page still list current information? Items that didn't match up:

  • Check firewall settings.

If your computer is behind a firewall, make sure that the firewall is not blocking activate.adobe.com through ports 80 and 443.

Mac OS: Applications > Utilities > Adobe Application Manager > core > PDApp

--> I don't see AAM in my Utilities folder. Plenty of other Adobe-branded stuff, but no AAM there. Is that the issue? Or has this just moved since whenever that was published?

  • Check access to the activation servers.

Start an Internet browser, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, and open one of the following links, depending on the version of Creative Suite:

CS5.5: https://activate.adobe.com/test

CS6 and later: https://lm.licenses.adobe.com/gdf/status.jsp

--> I only have Chrome and Safari installed, but neither one displays a successful message: I'm redirected to Adobe Systems Inc. - Access Denied and see http://tardis1.tinygrab.com/grabs/6111bb2e6dd61dc735e54a9825845f5459355cf8e0.png. Is that it?

I feel like I have a few good leads, but I can't find any more documentation to verify if I'm barking up the right tree. Any assistance would be helpful!

TIA

whatever you did with the disc is most likely the problem.

uninstall your adobe apps, clean (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and reinstall using the proper installation files:

Downloadable installation files available:

Download and installation help for Adobe links

Download and installation help for Prodesigntools links are listed on most linked pages.  They are critical; especially steps 1, 2 and 3.  If you click a link that does not have those steps listed, open a second window using the Lightroom 3 link to see those 'Important Instructions'.

‌An Adobe licensing rep called earlier today and told me CS5.5 "is so so old" that it won't work with Yosemite; my only options are to upgrade to CS6 for a special price of $550 or subscribe to Creative Cloud. I don't need the latest and greatest, I just need what I already have to work...

I haven't read about others not being able to use 5.5 on Yosemite. "Not supported" and "not functional" are two very different situations that were presented as one in the same. I'd be interested to hear if others have this same issue?

kglad‌: I'll try those fresh install file links you provided when I'm back at my computer.

did you properly install cs5.5 using the installation files, or did you migrate/transfer/etc from your prior installation?

if the latter, do the former.

otherwise, if you purchased from or registered with adobe, check your account for your serial number, Adobe ID

I just had to make a new Adobe ID, so there's nothing associated with this one. I did receive a message from the support team offering to call. Hopefully they have a way to resolve.
