Question

    Hi @Danii,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. To help us narrow this down, could you please confirm your exact InDesign version and Windows version? It would also be helpful to know where the affected files are stored: a local drive, external drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, SharePoint, or a network drive.

Could you also check whether the same behavior occurs with a brand-new InDesign document that you create and save locally (for example, on your Desktop)? Finally, if possible, please create a new Windows administrator account and test opening the same files there to see if they still open in read-only mode. Ref: https://adobe.ly/3SzsXa8

Looking forward to your update so we can investigate this further.

    Thanks,
    Abhishek

Hi, it’s InDesign 2026, Windows 11 Pro und the files are on a local drive. The issues occurs randomly with all files - whether they are brand-new or older. Sometimes the files can be opened without any problems and the next time the problem occurs.

    Hi @Danii

Thanks for the update. Could you please try the suggestions shared in this thread:
    https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-opens-files-randomly-in-read-only/m-p/14114810

    In particular, please:

    • Disable the Windows Explorer Preview Pane (if enabled) and restart your computer.

    • Test the behavior from a new Windows administrator account.

    • Please try moving one of the affected files to your Desktop, then open it and let us know if it still opens in read-only mode.

    • Compare whether the issue occurs when double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer versus opening it via File > Open in InDesign.

If possible, please also share a screen recording demonstrating the issue in action. That would be very helpful for further investigation.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Thanks,

    Abhishek
