Blank control panel after update?

Any buddy else having an issue with the control panel going blank after the 2019 update?

I've uninstall and reinstalled (twice, once keeping the app prefs and the second time removing them).

Once reinstalled, I relaunch inDesign and it comes back for a few minutes and then goes blank again.

To clarify, the actual box that houses the control panel is there, there's just nothing in it.

Have tried selecting different workspaces and still nothing.

Super frustrating. Any help would be great.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting that workaround. I followed the instructions and it seems to be working fine now. I also noticed in that Caches folder that I had residual v12 and v13 data. I don't know if that has anything to do with the Control Bar issue or not.

I will also add that when I renamed the Saved Data file and launched InDesign, Cmd-O (Open File) wouldn't work. I had to do a manual File->Open via the menu to open a document. After that, Cmd-O started to work. Go figure.

Needless to say, getting the Control Bar back is a small victory, even if it means working with it docked. I hope it stays on. Fingers crossed.

Thanks again for sharing that info.

Hi All,

Sorry to hear about this error. The issue has already been reported to the concerned team and we are working on it. In the meantime please try the workaround shared here and upvote the issue: InDesign CC2019 - blank control panel – Adobe InDesign Feedback

This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.

Srishti

Hi all,

Not sure where we are in relation to the blank control bar issue, however I have been given the following by Adobe as a workaround until the new upgrade (which is soon) appears.

You have 2 choices.

1: is the BETA version which people apparently have below and can be accessed here: https://www.adobeprerelease.com/

2: change the filename and follow the instructions - in the following location:
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version 14.0-ME\en_AE\Caches and
rename "InDesign SavedData" as "InDesign SavedData_bk"

Version 2 has successfully worked for our staff. Thanks.

I did forget to mention that Appdata folder is a hidden folder, so you will need to view hidden files in order to see.
to do this:

File explorer - at the top tabs click View - Tick hidden items checkbox in the top navigation pane.

Same here. It's driving me crazy and I have deadlines coming out of my ears. My productivity is down as I spend half the day looking for workarounds.

In CC 2018 AND 2019, I have to go to 'Float in window' to see the file I've opened and as of this morning, I can't see the control panel in either. It's seriously affecting my work so I'd really appreciate it if Adobe would fix it as a matter of urgency.

Please DON'T RELEASE SOFTWARE UPDATES UNTIL THEY'RE PROPERLY TESTED. I'd rather wait.

After contacting Adobe Help here's what they have suggested.

  1. Uninstall InDesign CC2019.
  2. Go back to your Creative Cloud app and reinstall InDesign cc2018.  (Next to "Update" click the dropdown menu. > Manage > Other Versions > Select "install" for the version you wish to reinstall.)

Adobe is aware of the problem and have not yet fixed it.

I'm amazed Adobe released this unusable upgrade. I'm trashing cache at least once a day. This morning I changed margins from .5 to .25 and all the text boxes and image boxes increased by .25. For instance, I was printing a 9"w x 4"h card for 2up. By default, ID is set with margins at .5. I changed margins to .25 and my live art was now 9.25 x 4.25. I had to cut the the card, change margin to .25, paste in place to get my 9 x 4 and dupe to get my 2up.

It sounds like you chose the Layout Adjust feature by accident? It's a feature you can read about here:

What’s New With InDesign CC 2019

If you want to talk about that feature, it's better to start a new discussion rather than hijacking this one which is about the problem with the Control Panel (to be fixed soon).

Steve,

Haven't upgraded to CC2019 at work yet as we can't afford an interrupted workflow, but fully intend to as soon as some of these issues get sorted. Do you have a suggestion once we do upgrade in regards to temporarily disabling the new features until we're ready to work in those modes? Should we start the program and without anything open tick off features in preferences? Just don't want to come out of the gate working on a file and be confounded by what's happening with new features. Have no problem diving in with new stuff on new documents.

This has been the most unproductive week. Work has slowed to a halt because of this issue. I trash cache and restart my computer. The control panel then comes back for about 1.78 minutes and starts loosing information. I find myself checking every hour for the CC update, however adobe doesn't seem to be fixing this bug. I'm ready to throw my computer out the window!!! Help me Adobe-Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope! But seriously FIX IT! Tonyinthecity is right, indesign is unusable right now!

While the engineers are working on the fix, download the InDesign version you were using before from the CC Desktop app.

My guess is that most folks do not know how to re-install InDesign 2018 from the Creative Cloud app

I'm having the same problem. I reported it to InDesign via their Twitter page. I tried deleteing prefs but that didn't fix it. I'm not going to bother with deleting the Cache folder -- others here have said that doesn't help either. Man, this is a big blunder. InDesign is almost unusable without the Control Bar.

Trashing cache works for a time and then the menu bar eventually disappears.

Hi All,

Sorry to hear about this. I would request to please try resetting preferences for InDesign: Set preferences in Adobe InDesign

If that does not help please try this method.

For Windows

Close all Adobe applications.

Go to Locations :

C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe

C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.

Rename InDesign folders.

Launch InDesign from CC.

For MAC

Close all Adobe applications.

Go to Locations:

~/Library/Caches

~/Library/Preferences

Rename Adobe InDesign and com.adobe.indesign

Launch InDesign from the CC

Srishti

You Can downgrade by going through you're CC panel. Click the little arrow and select manage. That will get you the different ID versions.

To Staff: Trashing preferences, or cache did not help.

Please provide a link to downgrade to InDesign 2018. I cannot live with the blank Control panel.
