Character Window - no options appear

When I try to use my Character Window in InDesign, the window is grayed out, no options appear. What is happening here? Can this be fixed?

My apologies, this did work. I tried this reset: Try restoring your InDesign preferences:Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences
