Question

Design layout completely disappearing

Hi there, I've searched the community and the web for this glitch and can't find it. unfortunately the latest updated to both software and OS haven't fixed this.

Basically, if I leave my design for a little bit, and then come back to it (say after a meeting)
I find that as soon as I tap the page with my cursor – the entire layout (all pages) disappear. Everything else is still present including my pages column on the right. But the only thing that seems to bring it back is saving and restarting the programme which obvs isn't convenient.

Anyone else experienced this and/or has a fix?

Many thanks
Carolyh

I have the same problem. Macbook Pro M3, Dell Q2723QE display.

I have to restart ID every time I connect or disconnect an external display.

Adobe CC UI does not use Apple UI OS resources, so it does not know how to respond properly to hardware changes and user interaction with other software. As a result, on-screen resolutions sizes and resolutions have been all over the place for years. 100% zoom is not 100%, even different between Adobe apps.

Multiple Adobe CC apps behave erratically in this way. Adobe Photoshop for example will force itself to the foreground when running batch automated tasks, even when the user switches to annother application. PS will overrule the user s focus and force to the foreground while it performs the task.

To this point, Adobe software has been enshittified to Quark Xpress levels.

1998 Quark Xpress that is.

This thread contains messages from different users who worked under different software and hardware configurations.

Can you please explain what issue exactly you experience, as well as list your InDesign and macOS versions.

The bug I'm experiencing is that InDesign pages/artboards frequently go blank - just showing the grey background with none of the content visible.

I'm running MacOS Tahoe 26.0.1, Macbook Pro Apple M2 Pro chip. InDesign 20.5.

I also experienced this on the previous MacOS version, Sequoia.

I run multiple monitors, and generally see this bug after switching monitors.

I also frequently run into issues where Adobe software is half off the screen and I'm unable to grab the top of the program which requires multiple software restarts, but that's a separate issue.

I came across this forum when I had the last page of my layouts keep disappearing and thought this would be helpful to share:

On my last page the content would all just disappear — just a blank page  (but the linked images were still showing in my links pallet). As I messed around with my "pages pallet",  it was not acting normal/not responsive and would eventually freeze up.

I finally figured it out --
This feature was added to the  "pages pallet" but it doesn't work. Instead, it makes content disappear from pages involuntarily and you can't get it back. When you move the pages around, it gets worse. It's a software bug and I downgraded back to the 2024 version to solve it. When I downgraded to the 2024 version, everything appeared again.

Notice that the new feature is not available in the pallet with the 2024 version and all the pages are fine in the page pallet.
I'll report it to Adobe and wait for the latest-latest version to come out.

The issue has resolved itself after I updated the OS to SEQUOIA 15.6.1. So it appears to have been a GPU bug that has been fixed.

I have the exact same issue. Un-checking GPU Performance, pages reappear, checking it again pages disappear. Extremely annoying!

Not sure if it helps - but there are 19.5 and 19.5.2 updates.

Hi there, 9 months later – this bug is still bugging. It's frustrating having to restart the software every time it happens

Can we have a progress report please as I can see numerous posts have been added to this thread since my original post. So clearly still an issue.

Thanks

Carolyn

I've been having the same issue for months and it's beyond frustrating. The weird thing is that I'm the only one in my creative department having this issue.

This issue just started for me.  I'm on INDD 19.5 and Mac OS 15.0.  Reading through these posts, I'm a little disappointed that it's been going on for so long and no one seems to have a solution yet.

This is the worst bug ever, i've m working on an iMac with 4GB Radeon Pro graphics card. System memory 32GB, Sonoma 14. 7.  Indesign 19.3 and random pages just disappeared while working on a magazine. Now I have to redo close to 16 spreads because toggling GPU performance on or off is not helping and neither is removing the rulers! We pay way too much to have problems like this. So annoying. If anyone knows another workaround please help. I have tried opening the file on 3 other macs with slightly different setups and the issue persists, my layouts which were done and exported to PDF are actually gone 😞 Feeling defeated!

Hmm... Do you mean that about 16 spreads have just disappeared from your file?

If that's the case then it's not related to the problem discussed in this thread. The screen redraw issues on Sonoma were fixed for quite some time by now; they aren't present in 14.7, and they have never resulted in any data loss anyway.

Your issue sounds like a file corruption (if indeed your pages have just gone.) Or an accidental deletion.

Do you have any incremental backups of your files (whether with Time Machine or another system)?

Also, try to update to InDesign 19.5 (the latest InDesign 2024), just don't upgrade to InDesign 2025 yet.

Try to export your file to IDML then open IDML - will it make any difference?

Also, try general troubleshooting steps:

Your versions of InDesign and macOS? Did you try suggestions and solutions offered in this thread?

I have the same problem and just went to preferences and turned off GPU performance and my pages re-appear. Turn GPU back on and pages disappear. So that's th ecause, whats the solution? Using Ventura 13.6.6. on Mac Mini M2 Pro with 32GB RAM. Screensaver conflict? Using latest Indesign version.

By @Angus Arnus

As you witnessed, the solution is to turn GPU performance off.

Thats not a solution, thats a compromise/workaround and it comes at a cost. With GPU off I now have to operate under a less than optimised workspace because Adobe has  a glitch in their software. I have troubleshot Mac issues for over 30 years so Im not new at this. Updates to software inherently come with the odd glitch as programmers get feedback from users. Need this fixed by Adobe ASAP.

Also have been having this issue for the past 3 months or so. It's insane that if you buy the creative suite for $720 a year, you don't even get functioning applications, insane.

If you want some help a bit more information would be useful.

Which exact version of InDesign and OS?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Please detail the issue you're experiencing.
