InDesign 2025 SLOW

Just started using ID 2025 this morning and I'm noticing a LOT of lag time with pretty much any activity. I'm running a Mac Studio with an M2 Ultra, so it's not my computer. I've tried some simple troubleshooting but it is simply not responding like ID 2024. Help!

Correct answer Mike Witherell

Here is a thorough compendium of InDesign troubleshooting.

This allows you to try multiple ideas to solve your slow-down problems (which can be caused by many different things).

I had the same problem, Indesign would slow down insanely after a few hours of work, and I had to restart the computer to make it work. For me, the reason was this:
On blank screen go to Edit - Preferences - Type - Enable in-menu font previews - switch off.
Same thing was slowing up Illustrator, also insanely.. Now both programs run as they should.

Mac book Pro 15" 2019 / Radeon Pro Vega 20 4GB. Indesign 20.2

In preferences > GPU > activated    and now everything works as expected. It seems in ID 2025 the GPU is not activated by default...

Yes, too many people are reacting to it being laggy.
Adobe is all about innovation, but forgets to optimize and address important basic operations.

Issue resolved - binned off 2025 and reinstalled 2024. It took a while to back-save all my working files but it's the best decision I've made. I just won't be updating to the current version now. Don't need the problems and I certainly don't need the useless generative AI rubbish. 2024 version does exactly what I want. There's no need to update if you don't need to. It offers nothing extra that benefits my workflow. If more people dumped 2025 and reverted back to more stable versions then the InDesign team wouldn't have the userbase engagements to justify their constant slapdash updating.

I am still having this issue. Especially when going between apps like Word, PowerPoint, and InDesign. I've done all these suggestions, but after a day the lag will reappear. Running Win11, 64GB RAM, Intel Core Ultra 9 on a Dell Precision 5690.

Confirm rampant 3-4 second beach balls when clicking around the menus, selecting text pauses and hesitations, scrolling same things.  Just received a brand new MacBook pro M4P this week, installed 2025 20.1 fresh and above description was the immediate result.

Pathetic.

Running the Mac OS 15.3 update this morning seemed to finally fix the issues for me, and I can use Indesign2025 again without wanting to tear my hair out every few seconds. Even with the context bar and font previews and everything left turned on.

Just in case: did you also update to the recently released InDesign 20.1?

I was already on 20.1 and experiencing the lag in it as of yesterday. I let the OS update run first thing when I sat down this morning.
(The OS update also fixed a different lag issue I was experience with gestures on the magic mouse since first going to OS 15 in general so maybe they were related for me?)

I just received the InDesign 20.1 update this morning on the East Coast. So far, things are running much better. More testing to come.

Same here! Thanks for the info and let's pray it lasts! Great news! Faith in Adobe restored.

An update was available today, and it’s now running significantly faster. Switching between the various Adobe programs also feels much snappier to me.

I'm not seeing that yet. What is the new version number?

not released in all countries yet, you may need to wait a few days (or less).

I am not sure why this is marked as Solved as it is not. I have an iMac with 32gb ram, running on Sequoia. I recently did a complete reformat over the Christmas holidays and reinstalled all the software. I have been experiencing all the same issues as others have noted. Extremely slow and laggy. Every time I click to do something I have to wait 2-5 seconds for the spinning wheel to "think" until it lets me do anything. Completely unusable.

I tried all of the suggestions in this thread, including disabling font previews, pre-flight etc, and resetting the prefs. The preferences reset seems to help, but only for a short time. Within minutes the issue returns.

I have given up and returned to InDesign 2024. This meant saving .idml files for all documents I had already created in 2025 so they would be backward compatible. 2024 is running flawlessly, so the issue is clearly with 2025.

Adobe, please fix this!!

I believe that when it was marked correct (at least Barb Binder's reply), the OP stated that it worked. Later on, the OP said it got better but the problem started up again but by then it was already marked. The only "correct" answer at the time of this post, is to revert back to 2024.

Reporting this in, too. On my M1 Max Studio with 64gb Ram the 2025 version runs like a dog. Incredibly laggy compared to the 2024 release.

Are we just sharing this since november 2024? Is there somebody Adobe reading this? I can't imagine this can't be fixed in 2/3 months. It's not freeware! We are paying customers and Adobe is just ignoring their customers!

Right! I have seen at least three recent updates for Illustrator and Photoshop and none for InDesign! How is this possible? Adobe, fix the problem! The solution can't be rolling back to the 2024 version!

Same here, not able to use 2025. I am going back to 2024. All I get is a spinning rainbow. My computer is new.
