InDesign 21.4.1 Freezes When Editing Paragraph Formatting on Windows 11

My InDesign hangs and shows a spinning cursor whenever I edit the formatting of a paragraph; it essentially freezes and just keeps spinning. I am using the latest version. This issue only started occurring after I updated to the new version.

    Hi @BHP_2026,

I'm sorry to hear you're running into this issue, and thank you for reporting it.

I tested this on InDesign 21.4.1 on Windows 11 with multiple documents but wasn't able to reproduce the behavior. To help isolate the cause, could you please try reproducing the issue in Windows Safe Mode to rule out any third-party applications or services interfering with InDesign? Ref: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234

Could you also create a new local administrator user profile and check if the issue occurs there? Ref: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/manage-user-accounts-in-windows-104dc19f-6430-4b49-6a2b-e4dbd1dcdf32

Could you also confirm whether the issue you're experiencing is similar to the one discussed here?

If the issue persists, could you please share:

    • A short screen recording showing the issue.
    • Whether this happens with newly created documents, small files, large files, or all document types.

In the meantime, I'm also checking this further with our Product Team. The additional information above will help us investigate the issue more effectively.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Abhishek

I recall that this issue has been reported by multiple users over the last year (I’ll try to find these threads). Did this start after you updated InDesign 2026 from a 21.x to 21.4.1, OR were you referring to upgrading from InDesign 2025 or earlier?

@leo.r I tried your method, but the problem persists. Anyway, thank you for suggesting a solution.

What exact version of InDesign are you using?

What exact version of operating system are you using?

Does this occur with all files?

Are these files on the local hard drive disk?

    Thank you for responding.

I’m using version 21.4.1, Win 11 - v.25H2. This occur will all files. And yes, they are on the local hard drive disk. Firstly, I thought it was an error when my files syncing on Dropbox, so I moved it to anothe disk. But it didn’t work.

Try resetting the InDesign Preferences back to the factory defaults to see if that sorts the issue out. You can do that under the General tab in InDesign Preferences (then closing and reopening the application).
