InDesign 21.4 Bug: Unable to Move Multiple Selected Objects When Dragging Over Placed Images

In the latest update of InDesign when I have multiple shapes and frames on the page selected, if my cursor is above something like a rectangle with content/picture inside it, I only move the picture that is below it at the time.

Rather than the whole selection of objects as it used to. I tested before and after the update and it was something that only broke with 21.4. If I cursor over a solid shape object while still selecting the entire group (including the photo frame) that then moves the entire section but only if cursor above a placed fill object does it break.

What could possibly be happening?

Hi, we released InDesign version 21.4.1 today that includes a fix for this issues. Please check out: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/desktop/whats-new/release-notes.html

Please update InDesign and let us know how it goes.

If you do not see the update in the Creative Cloud Desktop App, check out: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/update-creative-cloud-apps-manually.html

    Thanks,

You can hold shift while moving the selected object… but still, this is a definitely idiotic update, who approve this release?

Being a software developer myself, I can understand how this kind of ridiculous bug can sneak into a minor update even from such a reputable company like Adobe. I’m not justifying it, but I can understand. It’s not humanly possible to check every existing feature of a complex software like InDesign prior to an update (although all possible safeguards should be in place to avoid it).

Apple and Microsoft had their share of similar - and way more serious - bugs (and so had I, haha). Microsoft had such an update just recently, where users couldn't open InDesign files as they appeared to be "damaged." Years ago, Apple released a macOS update that erased entire FireWire drives without any warning.

Hopefully, one day AI will take care of this, as this would indeed be a good application of AI’s capabilities. Although who knows what other changes in the software world will happen when AI is able to cope with this task.

I found an answer in the google search to this forum, but the link is dead. The first answer in google search results is it’s a bug in v21.4. I’ve downgraded and it’s fixed the issue!

The most basic function in Indesign that everyone relies on, fix this now please

I am having the same problem. When I select a group of images, only the image my cursor is over moves. If I delete all the images out of the boxes, all items selected move together as they should.

Brutal. Why does every “update” end up causing other issues?!

Is anyone testing these updates before they’re released??!

    Same problem here 🤚

Grouping and ungrouping is a short term workaround for this issue.

I can’t use the key object align method.

Without even closing the software, restarting or anything… I came back in this morning and it’s behaving like normal WTF 🤯

Unfortunately, I have the same problem when I want to move multiple images on the same page. When I try to do that, only one image moves instead of all of them. There is definitely a way to solve it, but I wonder if this will be fixed by Adobe?

@Zattar Yes, Adobe is aware of this and, hopefully, will fix it in the next update. In the meantime, you can revert to InDesign 21.3: Creative Cloud app > InDesign > 3-dot menu > Other Versions
