InDesign 21.4 Bug: Unable to Move Multiple Selected Objects When Dragging Over Placed Images

In the latest update of InDesign when I have multiple shapes and frames on the page selected, if my cursor is above something like a rectangle with content/picture inside it, I only move the picture that is below it at the time.

Rather than the whole selection of objects as it used to. I tested before and after the update and it was something that only broke with 21.4. If I cursor over a solid shape object while still selecting the entire group (including the photo frame) that then moves the entire section but only if cursor above a placed fill object does it break.

What could possibly be happening?

Hi, we released InDesign version 21.4.1 today that includes a fix for this issues. Please check out: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/desktop/whats-new/release-notes.html

Please update InDesign and let us know how it goes.

If you do not see the update in the Creative Cloud Desktop App, check out: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/update-creative-cloud-apps-manually.html

    Thanks,

Same issue - looking forward to a fast fix, as it is a real workflow killer.

I think the fact this thread has 8139 views as at 16th June demonstrates how critical users find this bug. Adobe said they were working on a solution in the UserVoice request here https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180/suggestions/51343807 over 2 weeks ago but still nothing. This issue significantly affects work efficiency every single day - by HOURS when you add up every little time you need to work around it. Users are already frustrated by rising subscription prices and dodgy business practices like adding additional credit use not included in subscription fees to new features across the Adobe Suite.

Bare minimum would be preserving existing functionality and fast responses to bugs like this. Personally InDesign is usually the most reliable with the best feature set and I often choose it for tasks I could possibly complete in Illustrator or Photoshop simply for it’s logic and efficiency, and it’s the key program keeping me subscribing.

But bugs like this have been happening a lot more often in the past year or two with slow fixes, if they are fixed at all, and ‘features’ being changes in functionality we don’t care about while willfully ignoring feature requests users scream for, along with some real alternatives in the market now, has many of us on the precipice of leaving.

Got the same issue. Is it a bug or are you guys trying to force this onto the users as new behaviour? this bug has never been a bug before, why is this suddenly happening? It is immensely frustrating...

My coworker is really annoyed by this bug. For my sake, please fix this so I don’t have to hear her complaints anymore. Her computer keeps getting closer to the window… she’s about to just chuck it out. Please help… her computer is new and expensive and it would be better if it’s not thrown out the window... people sit out there often.

In the meantime, advise your coworker to revert to InDesign 21.3 as described in this thread.

In previous versions of InDesign, I would select multiple objects and then set one as a “key object” by clicking it once more. All selected objects would remain part of the “selection”, and the “key object” would appear with a thicker blue outline to denote successful assignment. Once set, I would use various alignment tools based on the given need - i.e. ‘align horizontal centers’.

In V 21.4, setting the “key object” is very buggy - it only registers when the cursor is just barely outside of the actual selected element whereas in previous versions a key object would register very reliably, so long as the cursor was near the edge of the given element.

If one can consider it as such, this ‘bug’ gets in the way of the workflow significantly, often resulting in a loss of the multiple selected elements. Getting something to register as the key object is very finicky.

While the user voice link shows a fix is still in the works, it is a little “triggering” to show a workaround listed as correct answer. Those two things are independent of each other. A workaround just saves users from rolling back the Adobe breaks something that has worked for over 20 years. The only “correct” answer in this circumstance is a patched version has been released. But 20 days later we are still awaiting that text continuing to pay to be beta testers.
