InDesign 21.4 Bug: Unable to Move Multiple Selected Objects When Dragging Over Placed Images

In the latest update of InDesign when I have multiple shapes and frames on the page selected, if my cursor is above something like a rectangle with content/picture inside it, I only move the picture that is below it at the time.

Rather than the whole selection of objects as it used to. I tested before and after the update and it was something that only broke with 21.4. If I cursor over a solid shape object while still selecting the entire group (including the photo frame) that then moves the entire section but only if cursor above a placed fill object does it break.

What could possibly be happening?

Hi, we released InDesign version 21.4.1 today that includes a fix for this issues. Please check out: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/desktop/whats-new/release-notes.html

Please update InDesign and let us know how it goes.

If you do not see the update in the Creative Cloud Desktop App, check out: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/manage-apps/creative-cloud-apps/update-creative-cloud-apps-manually.html

    Thanks,

My coworker is really annoyed by this bug. For my sake, please fix this so I don’t have to hear her complaints anymore. Her computer keeps getting closer to the window… she’s about to just chuck it out. Please help… her computer is new and expensive and it would be better if it’s not thrown out the window... people sit out there often.

In the meantime, advise your coworker to revert to InDesign 21.3 as described in this thread.

I am having this problem as well. It’s really annoying, Trying to build a catalog with lots of images to move around, and this is seriously slowing me down

In previous versions of InDesign, I would select multiple objects and then set one as a “key object” by clicking it once more. All selected objects would remain part of the “selection”, and the “key object” would appear with a thicker blue outline to denote successful assignment. Once set, I would use various alignment tools based on the given need - i.e. ‘align horizontal centers’.

In V 21.4, setting the “key object” is very buggy - it only registers when the cursor is just barely outside of the actual selected element whereas in previous versions a key object would register very reliably, so long as the cursor was near the edge of the given element.

If one can consider it as such, this ‘bug’ gets in the way of the workflow significantly, often resulting in a loss of the multiple selected elements. Getting something to register as the key object is very finicky.

While the user voice link shows a fix is still in the works, it is a little “triggering” to show a workaround listed as correct answer. Those two things are independent of each other. A workaround just saves users from rolling back the Adobe breaks something that has worked for over 20 years. The only “correct” answer in this circumstance is a patched version has been released. But 20 days later we are still awaiting that text continuing to pay to be beta testers.

Another month, another update, another bug!!! another 3+ weeks without a fix.

Been using inDesign for 20 years, never had a problem, now there’s one every month; all because you’re trying to squeeze AI into everything. it’s terrible. why do i need generative image AI in inDesign!!! Am looking into alternatives and potentially cancelling my subscription.

I should also mention that it's not even possible to set the key object

Definitely super annoying. It works if i hold the shift key when starting to move them and release shift once they are moving together, but it disrupts workflow a lot.
