InDesign files corrupted and unable to save after Windows 11 update KB5074109 (January 2026) - Post #2

Hello, after the last post with at last count about 46k views, this is a major issue with a thread that is now missing? Some have said it has resolved but I haven’t been able to get it resolved because Windows Update KB5078127 isn’t available for me after checking for updates (in AUS running 25H2).

The problem is that for files saved on OneDrive, InDesign crashes upon open or when trying to save.

What another helpful user has said:

  • Discovered a workaround on this, thanks to the help of our support company Air IT Group. On opening the file, make a change in the document (e.g add a cyan square to pasteboard), rather than 'save', click 'save as' and save as over the existing file name > then close the file > reopen the file again and 'save' function should now work without falling over, erroring or crashing out. Each time you open it for the first time, you'll need to do the 'save as' each time over existing file name for it to work. It's a frustrating workaround but at least you'll be able to work on the documents.

The other helpful fixes were:

  • Copying the .indd file to the local C:\ drive, work on it, put it back.
  • Uninstall Windows Security Update KB5074109, but this wasn’t an option for me and my IT crew were reluctant to do it even if they could.

These seems to work majority of the time and without the Windows Update KB5078127, this will have to do for now.

Wishing all my fellow Windows 11 OneDrive InDesign 21.* users all the best,

Hi all, after nearly a month of dealing with this issue I’m happy to report that I’ve seen 2 Windows updates this morning (KB5007651 and KB5077181) via Windows Update and from a bit of research it says that it has all the bug fixes from KB5078127:

    KB5077181 Windows 11 Cumulative Update build 26100.7840 (24H2) and 26200.7840 (25H2) - Feb. 10 | Windows 11 Forum

I hope the same goes for all of you here and this issue is fixed.

Like many, I can’t screw around with Windows because of my agency’s IT department. The save to hard drive and then copy back into OneDrive seems to work (fingers crossed). But when will Adobe fix this mess?

@jayneb17637101 This is Microsoft’s mess, and Microsoft did fix it by now. Your IT department should simply install the current Windows update instead of leaving the one that’s by now outdated and is knowingly buggy.

This windows update are pushed by my IT department and cannot be uninstaled. What is the solution? My production are highly affected by this errors.

    Hi @Erikanu,

I completely understand how disruptive this has been, especially with Windows updates being controlled by your IT team. Based on current findings, this behavior is linked to recent Windows OS changes affecting how cloud-backed files are handled after the update. There haven’t been any recent InDesign changes that would trigger this on their own.

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue on both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and we are working closely with them toward a resolution.

In the meantime, please go through the steps in the following article and let me know the outcome:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/error-2-or-crash-during-file-save-operations.html

The guidance there specifically addresses the ‘Error 2’ and crash during save behavior many users have reported in this situation.

Please share an update after trying those steps, and we’ll continue from there if needed.

    Abhishek

update ::  I had the Windows updates paused for a few weeks,  I guess the duration ended because I got the error message,  when I went into the windows updates I saw that KB5074109 had reinstalled but a 2nd update installing so I left the update that caused the issues and waited for the 2nd update to install after reset the issue is gone so I guess between Windows and Adobe they solved the issue.  I have not had any error issues or crashes with InDesign since this 2nd update.

wouldn’t it be amazing if pop ups appeared to tell Adobe users about the status of the problem, in the same way as we have those irritating Creative Cloud pop ups telling you you should update/install new releases… same mechanism, but COMMUNICATING with the clients - no more secrets, please Adobe!

I keep having problems saving files in InDesign – update KB5074109

I had uninstalled the KB5074109 update. However, a few days ago the PC no longer gave me the option to shut down without updating and forced the update to install.
Since this morning, when reopening existing InDesign files, the same error comes up again when saving changes (error 2).

What needs to be done to solve this problem once and for all?

In order to work on a file, I have to open the IDML version, edit it, and then repackage it so that I can save the changes.

Otherwise, I’m not able to do it.

In case you missed my earlier answer to the same question you posted 9 hours ago:

As far as I understand, by now Microsoft released a newer update that fixes the problems of the faulty update (you can find more info in the thread).

This new update from Microsoft did not solve this Indesign problem for me, something to do with the OS of my coputer (26200.7623) not being included in this update. Still waiting for next update.

I had success patching forward to the latest Microsoft update (KB5074105) Others say to roll back the one update (KB5074109) that appears to be causing this. This is a Microsoft Windows Update problem.

This massive problem is dreadful -  Adobe taking no responsibility for fixing it - laughing all the way to the bank as the old saying goes.

I feel that this monster issue also has something to do with InDesign repeatedly crashing - but who knows, as Adobe STILL has NOT resolved the Broken Ctrl Z issue globally. Shame on you, Adobe.

Concordo. Infelizmente ficamos reféns ao utilizar a ferramenta e não ter o devido suporte. Melhor informar que o programa não funciona mais para o Windows, já que, ao que parece, os problemas são apenas nele.

What is the ETA on fixing this on your end? It’s no secret that every build of InDesign since you went to the cloud model has been a disaster and I’m one bad day away from just winging it with another app. The shame that Adobe should feel for collecting money for the garbage you’re producing cannot be understated. You are costing all of us so much time and money that I cannot wait to hear about you finally going under and being replaced by literally anything, even if it’s bad.
