InDesign freezes, Save and Close become disabled, causing loss of work on macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta

Hello,

I am a professional graphic designer and I use Adobe InDesign all day, every day, for client work.

Immediately after installing the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta, InDesign became almost unusable.

The problem is intermittent. InDesign can work normally for a while, then suddenly freeze. It seems to happen most often when I am editing text or changing fonts, although I cannot reproduce it consistently.

When this happens:

  • Save becomes disabled (greyed out).
  • Save As becomes disabled.
  • Close becomes disabled.
  • I cannot save my work.
  • I cannot close the document.
  • The only solution is to Force Quit InDesign, which causes me to lose hours of work.

This happens with multiple InDesign documents, not just one file.

I have already:

  • Updated InDesign to the latest version.
  • Tested a previous version of InDesign.
  • Restarted my Mac many times.

The issue started immediately after installing the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Can Adobe confirm whether this is a known compatibility issue with the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta?

If needed, I can provide screenshots, crash logs, screen recordings, or any additional information that may help reproduce and investigate the issue.

This issue is currently preventing me from working professionally, so any guidance or workaround would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Issues seem to have resolved with the release of Golden Gate Beta 5 today.

The advice is always to not update to Beta software of course if you rely on key apps but this is a good step forward.

    Hi @teejaycee23,

Thanks for the update and for testing this on macOS 27 Golden Gate Beta 5. It's encouraging to hear that the freezing and disabled Save/Close behavior appears to be resolved so far.

I've shared your update with the team for visibility. Please keep us posted if the issue returns or you notice any related behavior.

Thanks again for taking the time to report back!

As a general comment, and to reinforce what @leo.r wrote: If you are in a professional working environment, whether employed or a contractor, you should never, as a matter of professional ethics and best practice, use beta software for your production work. This is especially true of OS betas, and, in the last few years, particularly true of Mac OS betas.

Decades of experience lie behind the rule most professionals follow: Never use the first official release of a new version or a new product. The smart money waits until at least the first round of bug fixes, preferably the second, before switching.

    Hi

just installed Mac os Golden Gate and i also suffer from the same bug: documents cannot be saved, shortcuts won’t work, and the restoration of the document also damaged.

is there any solution out there?
I see the same issue from 4 years ago and still no solution 🤷‍♀️😩

Some other users report similar issues on Golden Gate beta:

Regardless, as I’m sure you understand, macOS 27 Golden Gate beta is not supported. It’s good to know about any issues user experience on that beta and Adobe does take notes. However, those issues are currently irrelevant for real-world InDesign use.

So first of all, I can only recommend using InDesign on a supported version of macOS.

    > I see the same issue from 4 years ago

Does it mean that you experienced this issue 4 years ago, and now it has returned on the beta of Golden Gate? Do you currently experience this problem on any supported macOS version?

    Hi everyone,

Thank you all for reporting this and for sharing your observations and workarounds. I'm sorry to hear about the trouble this issue is causing.

Since you're currently using macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta, I'd recommend, if possible, reverting to macOS Tahoe, which is currently within InDesign's supported operating system requirements.

You can find the list of supported operating systems for InDesign here:
    https://adobe.ly/4hx48px

As macOS Golden Gate is still in beta, it isn't officially supported by InDesign yet. We recommend waiting until the operating system is officially released and added to InDesign's supported compatibility list. Once support is available, the HelpX page linked above will be updated accordingly.

In the meantime, I've shared these reports with our product team for further investigation. I'll keep this thread updated if we have any findings or additional information to share.

Thank you again for taking the time to report this and for your patience.

Don’t lose hours of work. Save frequently!

    This has also impacted me.

A workaround to not lose your work:

    • Save & Close issue happens
    • With the existing INDD file still open, Create a new document in the same size, just one page
    • Go back to the document which won’t save or close
    • Use the Pages panel to select all pages of your existing document
    • Right click and Move Pages
    • Move the pages to the new document you’ve created. Save the new document.

As a workaround I’ve effectively got two of the same document running side by side, switching to the other when one has this issue.

Yeah, I’ve done something similar – I created a blank “workspace” page and copy the document into the blank page, close the original document then reopen and paste the work back into the original. It seems to get the job done.

Yep. I’ve had the same issue. I usually haven’t had issues with beta versions but this one got me. If you use InDesign regularly and want to be an early adopter—don’t.

Yes, it’s publicly and officially known that Adobe’s software is not compatible with the versions of operating systems that have not yet been released.

@Etienne Francey It’s a valuable report which, I’m sure, will help Adobe troubleshoot InDesign performance on macOS 27 beta.

The only solution is to Force Quit InDesign, which causes me to lose hours of work.
This issue is currently preventing me from working professionally, so any guidance or workaround would be greatly appreciated.

I’m sorry, but these statements are not correct. InDesign has nothing to do with your losing hours of work, and it’s not what’s preventing you from working professionally.

What’s causing you all these problems is that you’re working on a beta version of the operating system. Software betas are released only for testing. You shouldn’t do any actual work with beta software.

The only workaround for you in this particular case is to install a stable version of macOS and work from there.

I've had the same issues… I am NOT on a beta version of the OS or using any beta versions of the software apps….

I understand, and therefore your case is totally different. You may want to post a new thread with the detailed descriptions of your issues. Otherwise your posts will be lost in this irrelevant thread that discusses macOS beta experiences.
