InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

How can you say you don't understand?
We pay for programs that must be tested as stable BEFORE being released. We don't care about constant little innovations; we want STABLE programs that work.
Try to speak like professionals, as you should be.
Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.
We're not grumbling, we're angry.

Hi All,

Thank you for your patience. The team has released a Fix for this issue is now available in the latest InDesign Prerelease build - 21.2.0.27

Please try out this Prerelease build and let us know if it resolves the issue.

If you are not already part of InDesign's Prerelease program and would like to join and try out the latest Prerelease build, please do the following:

* Go to https://adobe.ly/4qUXgUv

* Sign in with your Adobe ID (the Email ID associated with your Adobe account)

* Select ‘Available Programs’

* Find ‘InDesign Prerelease’ and click ‘Join’

* Once you’ve joined, go to the Creative Cloud Desktop Application on your machine, click on 'Apps' in the section on the left

* Select the 'Pre-release' tab – there you will find the InDesign (Prerelease) build

* To check the Build number of the Prerelease build, hover the cursor over the name – you will see the Build number 'v_________'

* Select ‘Install’

Thanks,

Harshika

I can also confirm that at least in my case, upgrading my RAM from 16GB to 32GB fixes both issues. (No, I'm not saying we need to all get more RAM; I had been considering it for other reasons and this became the catalyst to finally do it.)

January 26, 2026

To confirm, I'm having this issue on my PC that does indeed have 16GB of RAM, and none of my coworkers with a MAC are having this issue.

Yes, it is a Windows only issue but it's supposed to be fixed in the 21.2 update that is rolling out now. I can't comment because I have not seen that issue here. It seems to be mainly on machines with 16GB of RAM. Here's the link to the changelog for 21.2: InDesign release notes

From the Oxford Dictionary:
NOW:  "(at) the present time".

My concept of "now" must be somehow different from yours...

When will this be avalible to the regualr user? I can't install prerelease programs my instuition prohibits that. This need to be avalible to the general user before this can be considered fixed.

Hi @22968670,

Thanks for checking in. I understand the concern, especially if you're unable to install pre-release builds due to institutional policies. At the moment, I only have a tentative timeline from the product team, and while this can still change, the fix is currently expected to roll out to the regular Creative Cloud release in the next few days.

As soon as the update is available, it will be shared in this thread.

I'll keep you posted if there's any change to the timing.

Abhishek

Merci !

This issue is not resolved by a "correct answer" of a beta release that a large number of professionals cannot install. Stop trying to bury this issue in the discussion forum.

Adobe can mark this resolved when it is distributed through regular CC channels.

Previously, in InDesign, when you press Ctrl+Z on the keyboard, you could go back maybe 50 steps. Since December, this has disappeared, I can only go back one step. Disaster. Colleagues told me that now I have to call it up in the History panel. But it doesn't work as well as CTRL+Z before, sometimes I can only go back 3 steps in the history. Why did this great function disappear? But most importantly: this doesn't work on my computer at home. I have the same version at work and there it still works the old way, CTRL+Z and 50 steps back. How is this possible? Today I uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign, to see if that would help, but nothing changed.

This is a known issue discussed in the post listed below. This has since then been fixed and is currently available in prerelease builds. See the following for more details

The PreRelease does NOT work. Fix this or Select Choice International will cancel all their Adobe accounts.

Soluzione undo confermata:
Dopo tre giorni di supporto Adobe (reset completi, reinstallazioni, tentativi di Prerelease), l’unica soluzione funzionante è stata l’installazione di InDesign 2024.

Con la 2024:

  • Undo funziona correttamente

  • Questo conferma che il bug è specifico di InDesign 2026 su Windows.

Ringrazio l’ultimo tecnico che ha insistito sul downgrade: ora posso lavorare senza rischi. spero sia utile a chi ha lo stesso problema

OK, so we have to thank the expert and the Adobe team for telling us to go back two years to get work done.
What about the compatibility we no longer have with our customers?
What about the two-year subscription we paid for every month?
Is anyone thinking of refunding us?!?

I use In Design everyday from 7 to 10 hours. I just can't explain how much a pain in the ass this problem is. You should stop developing any other tools and FOCUS ON THIS.
How can you even release an update with this kind of problem. This lack of quality control is unacceptable in THE MOST EXPENSIVE DESIGN SUITE ON THE MARKET.

Hi sminguijon,

We apologize for the frustrating experience. I assume you're talking about this issue: https://adobe.ly/4pLFBgR

If so, the team has released a fix for this issue in the prerelease build. Please follow the steps mentioned here:
https://adobe.ly/4jMbxRd

Let us know if that solves the issue.

Thanks,

Harshika

I followed all the steps but the app doesn't show on my prerelease tab. I've checked several times already...
