InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

How can you say you don't understand?
We pay for programs that must be tested as stable BEFORE being released. We don't care about constant little innovations; we want STABLE programs that work.
Try to speak like professionals, as you should be.
Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.
We're not grumbling, we're angry.

I have been agonising over this for two days, uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, deleted caches, preferences, everything i could think of. I should have just checked the community forum and/or shouldve know Windows would be at fault

A pre-release version with a fix is available - follow these instructions:  https://adobe.ly/4pzF5Cy

It would have been helpful if @Abhishek Rao had pinned the post that had that announcement, but since he didn't, I'm trying to let people know.

Prerelease does NOT work.

Guten Tag,

Hi @vicent_8792,

Thanks for raising this and sorry to hear that you experience this. I'd like you to check this similar community thread, as the behavior described there closely matches what you're seeing with the undo history being much shorter than expected: https://adobe.ly/4qqVjPQ.

If this matches your experience, I want to let you know that this has already been logged as a bug, and the product team is actively working on a fix, which will be provided soon.

Please let me know if this aligns with what you're seeing on your end, and I'll be happy to follow up based on your update.

Gracias por la respuesta. Si que coincide con el problema planteado. Espero que haya una solución pronto porque afecta bastante al rendimiento efectivo de los trabajos de maquetación, incluso con perdida de datos no recuperables por falta de historial. Un saludo

We have 20  machine using adobe and in all the machines we are facing the same problem. If the Memory is high in a machine the problem does not occur but  if the memory is 16gb or lower then the problem exists. How to get a fix. Will Adobe pay for the extra memory cost.

January 15, 2026

Agree with you and something is going wrong with ID, developer must consider this problem, earlier were no issue with machine specification.

In InDesign, I am only able to undo one time. I can click Ctrl Z once, but it will not undo beyond that. Also, when I am working on a doc, things randomly disappear and I have to scroll up and down to get it to show up again.

Have you tried the good old restart of InDesign and/or your computer?
Is it only happening with a single file or all files?

Hi @casey_snyder,

Thanks for sharing the details and sorry that you experience this. I'd like you to check this similar community thread, as the behavior described there closely matches what you're experiencing with undo being limited and content disappearing until the screen refreshes: https://adobe.ly/3YCYFTJ.

If this matches your issue, I want to let you know that it has already been logged as a bug and the product team is actively working on a fix, which will be provided soon.

Please let me know if this aligns with what you're seeing on your end, and I'll be happy to follow up based on your update.

To those of you grumbling recently: The fix is in pre-release, and you can get it now - so far, those who have installed the pre-release say it's fixed. Join here: https://adobe.ly/4pzF5Cy

Point taken and well made, but CS is meant to be professional design software, it's not Pokemon. We shouldn't need to install pre-releases.

Just as Adobe InDesign devoured QuarkXPress when the time came, I don't rule out the possibility that the same thing could happen again in reverse...
Professionals need stable programs, not a flurry of new versions.

Anything is possible, but I doubt it would be by Quark.

This is so disapointing - InDesign has become a piece of garbage - while Adobe sends out endless updates - the programming is getting worse and worse. Please get your act together.

Adobe only invests in its flagship programs, Photoshop, Premiere, etc.
InDesign probably doesn't have a large market share, and the results are accordingly. Each update is based on a previous patch, up to the first version.
Until Adobe rewrites InDesign, we can only dream of getting software that works smoothly, quickly, and without crashes.

Maybe the solution is a big strike by us, the designers?
It's like holding a consumer strike on the electric company and threatening them that we will switch to using batteries instead of their service.
No software in the world can really compete with InDesign, unfortunately.

I have the same problem.

Everything was working fine, until a few weeks ago...

I almost bought a new, more powerful computer, but after some testing I noticed that the problem is not related to the computer's capabilities, or its RAM. It also occurs when it comes to a short file and simple operations - they are simply deleted!

Additionally, in other programs - such as Microsoft Word - the entire history is saved, as usual, even in huge files and in an endless sequence of actions...

I switched to version 21, and the problem still exists.
I went back to version 20 and updated to its latest release, and the problem still exists.

It is an INTEL I3, 10th generation, 8 GB computer. But I have had it for several years, and this problem has only just arisen...

I hope that ADOBE will soon find the cause of this problem, and fix it.
Because "A people without a past, has no future..." 🙂

Thank you. Izak Winograd

I think hell will freeze over before we hear anything from Adobe. They have
our money. We depend on their products and they don't care.
