InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

I have the same problem.

Everything was working fine, until a few weeks ago...

I almost bought a new, more powerful computer, but after some testing I noticed that the problem is not related to the computer's capabilities, or its RAM. It also occurs when it comes to a short file and simple operations - they are simply deleted!

Additionally, in other programs - such as Microsoft Word - the entire history is saved, as usual, even in huge files and in an endless sequence of actions...

I upgraded to version 2026 of INDESIGN yesterday, but the problem is still there.
I hope that ADOBE will soon find the cause of this problem, and fix it.

Hello,

I’m experiencing a very strange and persistent issue with Adobe InDesign on Windows.

No matter what I do, InDesign only allows one single undo (Ctrl+Z). After that, undo is no longer available.

Here are the key details:

  • I originally installed InDesign 2026, noticed the issue, and downgraded to InDesign 2025 (version 20.x)

  • The problem still happens in 2025

  • It happens even in a brand-new document

  • No images, no links, no master pages, no anchored objects

  • Literally: create a new doc → draw a frame → move it twice → only one undo possible

  • I reset preferences using the keyboard shortcut at launch

  • I also manually deleted preferences using:

    • %appdata%\Adobe\InDesign\Version 20.0

    • %localappdata%\Adobe\InDesign\Version 20.0

  • Restarted Windows

  • The issue persists

  • It happens in every document, not just one file

This makes InDesign almost unusable, and I’ve never encountered this behavior before.

Has anyone seen this issue?
Could this be caused by:

  • a Windows-level conflict?

  • a background utility (clipboard manager, screen capture, antivirus)?

  • a known bug introduced recently?

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Same problem here, version 21.1 x64,
Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 25H2
Installed on ‎13/‎12/‎2024
OS build 26200.7462
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.275.0

Only 2 or three undo's allowed. Also if In design file is open and saved while working, all undo's are gone. Please make a fix. Just lost all my text on a file because i made all text as curves and saved by accident and no undo is available. Didn't close the file.

Also no option to increase the numbers of undo's provided anywhere in In design's settings.

Hi,

An update of a likely timescale for when this issue will be fixed would be helpful. It's a massive issue and seems to have been ongoing some weeks. It's making InDesign almost unusable at the moment. When can we expect a fix?

Yo tambien tengo un portatil con 16GB de RAM

Porfavor PRIORIDAD!

Llevamos practicamente 1 mes con este problema!

January 10, 2026

Just made a test now and I want to share the findings:

My DELL XPS8700 have 16GB of RAM, with 2 8GB slots installed. I have 2 more 8GB sticks in the drawer, but everytime I tried to install them, my Windows10 gave me blue screen errors regarding the RAM, so I gave it up and left them unused. Perhaps they are broken? Uncompatible? Faulty? Well, I don't know.

But this morning it occured me that --- perhaps 1 of the spare sticks is faulty and the other is not! So I tried to add JUST MORE 8GB to my 16GB configuration, summing up to 24GB in my machine. Windows is working normally, no blue screen errors (although it could be too earlier to assume success).

AND... InDesign is WORKING PERFECTLY AGAIN! No more history steps disappearing! Infinite undos are back!

It seems the problem is indeed linked to the 16GB of RAM scenario.

Now I hope my extra added 8GB don't start to give me errors...

I have 64Gb of high quality RAM in my machine and this still is a problem.

January 10, 2026

I saw some people tried to downgrade InDesign installation to the older version available at Adobe CC at the moment — and problem still persists.

So, I wonder, is it possible to get a link for a yet older installer of InDesign? Let's say, a InDesign late 2024 version?

I am willing to try that to see what happens. I really don't care about this new and fancy features Adobe is adding across all softwares. I just want to work in my INDD files locally, no online stuff, no cloud storage, no sharing, no AI stuff at all...

Another type of display error, where parts of the image are lost. When opening a document, entire rectangles of the layout pages disappear. When you page up/page down, the missing portion of the screen reappears. Really annoying.

I have kind of the same issue, but with text disappearing inside a text box.

As soon as the history is messed up, i can reproduce the issue by clicking with the left mouse button anywhere in the text box. To bring the text back, i can us zoom operation...

See the attached video...

And there's another annoying issue i've found: After doing the zoom operation using <Alt>+Mousewheel, the focus is lost. I need to press <Esc> to bring the focus back to the text box. Maybe this is a feature, not a bug, but i kind of find it annoying...

This is currently a widespread issue on Windows, it's being discussed here:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-undo-history-clears-itself-without-user...

Adobe recently announced that the fix is currently in the works for a forthcoming update (you can find it in the above thread).
