InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.

Undo stops working after 1–2 steps in InDesign 21.0.x on Windows. Happens in new documents, GPU disabled, local files. Preferences reset did not help.  As a temporary workaround, I am currently using InDesign version 20.5.1, where the issue does not occur.

Update: I also tested this issue in an earlier stable version (InDesign 20.5.1), and the problem still occurs.
Undo works briefly after launching the app, then stops working again (only 1–2 steps), even in new documents.
This indicates the issue is not limited to a specific version.

Since the problem started out of the blue, in different versions, machines and so on, I guess this problem could be bigger than "just InDesign". In my opinion the bug could be related to something in the Adobe CC app itself, since now we have this useless (at least for me) IA and SHARING features directly incorporated.

Let's see what Adobe engineers will come up. And I hope soon... It's complicated to work almost with no UNDO at all!

No issue with Illustrator, but givne the amount of background junk the CC app forces into Windows I would not be surprised.

The Adobe Crash Reporter constantly locks up my files in Explorer after a crash until the task is killed.

Hello, started experiencing the same thing here today. Yesterday was fine. I've been working on this page for a half hour, and here's my history palette. I can only go back once. This has happened all day on mulitple pages. We'r using Indesing 20.3.1

To anyone trying to pinpoint this down to a date - I noticed this on and off before, and my google search history shows me looking for this problem on the 9th December -  specifically for working on cloud documents on the newer version of indesign.

How many people with this bug have either used the new online share for comment/incopy feature, or updated to the new version of indesign and rolled back?

December 18, 2025

Never used any of the "new" features of InDesign. I simply update because my publisher sends me new-version INDD files, and I just follow the trail. For me, I could be still using Illustrator from Adobe CS5!!!

About my current Windows setup:
Edição Windows 10 Home Single Language
Versão 22H2
Instalado em ‎30/‎03/‎2025
Build SO 19045.6691

And yes, it seems the problem started few weeks ago. I can't recall the issue back in November.

I found the UserVoice bug tracker for this: https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs/suggestions/50813147--id-4274243-indesign-clearing-undo-stack-frequent

But I have not received the Windows update that is being suspected of being related (I'm not sure why, as it was probably supposed to be the December "Patch Tuesday", but that's beside the point). So that's not the cause of these bugs. I'm running Win11 23H2, and the last update I received was on Nov. 20 (KB5068865).

23H2 is more than a year old. Current Windows version is 25H2. That may explain why you didn't get that specific update.

The UserVoice description says: "A Windows update has been pushed on 09 December 2025 for Win11 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2." And https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/december-9-2025-kb5071417-os-build-22631-6345-5b7b15d8-96a2-4c8f-a61d-b5e1bc9618f8 explicitly says KB5071417 is for 23H2.

As for why I haven't upgraded to 24H2 or 25H2: I use a plugin called ExplorerPatcher to allow me to have a Windows10-style status bar (on the side instead of the bottom, and other aspects of it), and it isn't compatible with the newer Windows major updates. I will eventually have to give up, but I'm giving ExplorerPatcher a little more time.

Just to report that I'm also having the same problem, Windows 11. This needs a fix asap!

The cause of the InDesign errors is unlikely to be the Win11 update. Because the errors also occur on a computer with Win10 in our department!
I've also noticed that since updating to InDesign 21.0.2, a whole host of other annoying errors have appeared that weren't there before. However, listing all of them would exceed the scope of this thread. Unfortunately, I don't have the time for that because the numerous bugs make my work take much longer than before...
It's good to hear that Adobe can now reproduce the problem with the Undo command. This gives us all hope that there will be a timely solution to the problem...

I still am having windows 10 and it's also present sadly 😞

I am also experiencing this issue along with the bug where the text disappears and reappears, as other users have reported. Reinstalled InDesign 2025, and the issues still occur. Running on Windows 11, and the only recent changes is that 2025-12 Security Update (KB5072033) (26200.7462) was installed on 12.15.2025. None of the mentioned fixes work, and no other users in my group (we all use the same PCs) are reporting the issue.

Clarification: Several people lately have said that in their case the history list consistently goes down to 5~6 steps, but that's not the same for everyone or all the time. In my case, it most often goes all the way down to only 1 or 2 steps besides "Open" (the last one or two things I did - the older ones disappear from both the History panel and what Ctrl-Z will do).
