InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

How can you say you don't understand?
We pay for programs that must be tested as stable BEFORE being released. We don't care about constant little innovations; we want STABLE programs that work.
Try to speak like professionals, as you should be.
Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.
We're not grumbling, we're angry.

Today I discovered I also have this problem. Normally I can go back a lot of steps, but even with the history panel open, the actions are being deleted in front of my eyes.

Hopefully you can find a solution to this problem and if I need to do anything to help you, please let me know.

I’m also having the same problem. On another PC, using a different Adobe account, it works, even though it’s the same version of InDesign. I’ve already reinstalled InDesign and deleted the preferences, but the problem persists.

Same problem here. I try many different solutions, but nothing works.

To all incompetent "experts" here: 1. the reported problem is crucial and devasting for our workflow, 2. it came out of the blue on one day after the last InDesign update, and -for many users- without any updates done to system etc., 3. so it's 100% not a matter of memory or local settings, 4. stop interrogating frustrated users like a cop (if you have nothing to say about (laready proved!) fixing of the bug - you are just adding noise within a serious subject! 5. Adobe, go to work immediately and present the solution!

I get your frustration but keep in mind that this discussion is a combination of many posts here that was put together once it became apparent that this was a widespread issue. When originally reported the first thing anyone is going to ask is for system specs so I suggest you keep your insults to a minimum.

I won't speak for anyone else but I'm not very incline to help anyone with your attitude.

..and here you go again - another useless comment in the thread. If you have nothing helpful to say apart from patronising sermon, why comment anyway? No one will regret your input since you have nothing to offer; your threats are therefore absurd. Facts: 1) The problem we have [resetting history + disspaearing text] is devastating for our work; 2) Came out of the blue on the same systems and hardware we were nicely working on untill the 21.x updates [Windows, plenty of RAM, good graphics adapter - as it is for most people dealing with professional layouts]; 3) None ideas so far were of any help [clearing preferences, resetting, rollback, etc.] 4) The problem is rooted in software itself and apparently it originates from the new InD architecture where the history is no longer simple and linear but more and more fused with shared document-state system: previews, GPU performance, dynamic UI panels, view synchronization, recovery etc.; 5) It's kind of a bug but deeply rooted - someone need to take of care of this fast and effectively. ... so - if I acted like you, Bob, I should now sum it up: "look and learn, this a post that bring something to the subject". You're welcome.

Add me to the list. I had to recreate 50 pages of a document today when I couldn't reverse the changes beyond 5 %##!** steps.

This needs to be a hotfix - now.

I have the exact same problem. I've tried literally everything. Cleared the cache, restart, installed an older version, uninstalled all programs using the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and reinstalled  evrything...the problem still persists, but only in InDesign. I have version 21.0.2 installed.

Same problem as everyone else. I hope Adobe has a fix quick because it truly disrupts the creative flow of being able to undo anything made. Only in InDesign.

Having this same issue as of this week. InDesign v 21.0.2, Windows 10. Tried all the suggested solutions and nothing has worked. Tried an older version of InDesign and uninstalled/reinstalled and still having the same issue.

December 16, 2025

I am having the same issue. I am on InDesign 2026 version and can only do 5-6 undos in my open file. I tried resetting my preference and also deleted Cache/Temp files. But have the same issue of limited numbers of Undos and History Panel

Hello @hardi_3708,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. We are currently checking this with the product team. Could you also share the following information:

For macOS computers:
System Report

- You can generate it from the Apple icon > About This Mac > System Report > Save to the desktop.

For Windows computers:

System Report:

- Please press Windows Key + the letter "R" on your keyboard to bring up the Run command window

- Type "msinfo32" in the Open field and left-click OK

- While viewing the Microsoft System Information summary, go to File, then choose Save (Please do not use Export)

- Save your MSINFO32 report as "msinfo32.nfo" on your desktop to easily locate it after. It can take up to a minute to generate a report.

Kindly upload the files and a screen recording of your exact workflow leading up to the problem to Google Drive/Dropbox/etc, and share a public link here or via DM so that we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hey Mr. Anubhav! Just sent you my MSINFO + VIDEO recording!

December 16, 2025
In our graphics department the problem described here has been occurring at three of seven workstations since yesterday. Two of three computers are running Windows 11, and one is still running Windows 10. The InDesign version used is 21.0.2 in each case, and the hardware on all seven computers is nearly identical (e.g., 16 GB RAM each).
All the proposed solutions described in this forum have been tried, unfortunately without success. An earlier version of InDesign was also installed, but the described problem occurs there as well. It's strange that this problem doesn't occur on four computers in our department...
Recently, additional errors have sporadically occurred at workstations affected by the described problemWhen editing a text, the entire text within the text frame is suddenly hidden. It is only visible again after scaling or scrolling the text.
Thanks in advance for a quick solution to the problems.

Also been having the text disappear issue as well, which ive seen other posts about. Hopefully another issue that will get fied and looked at soon, though its not nearly as disruptive as this Undo/History problem.

December 16, 2025

Yes, my text has been disappearing as well.

Also adding to this. During editing the text in a frame or table. the whole frame turn into white and it goes away, but once I zoom in, the text show again. This glitch I'm sure that is connected to the memory issue like the history issue.
