InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

I just noticed that just before my history resets, you see indesign 'reading' some images. (you see the message next to the preflight message in the bottom bar).

I recorded it.

I'm just moving one image around on the page here... nothing else.

also happens while typing etc...

Hallo!

Dies geschieht bei all meinen Dateien.

Same issue here!

Windows 10, plenty of RAM, only InDesign opened.

My history states to 4, 5... then they clear themselves automatically every few seconds.

Did anyone try to install the older version available in CC? InDesin 20.0?

Oh Zeus, how I miss the old Adobe CS6 package...

I've gone back to 20.5 and the problem still persists. My personal desktop computer doesn't show this issue though, it's still on windows 10... not sure if there's been a windows update that indesign doesn't like. Seems odd that the older versions start doing it too.

Just tried installing the indesign beta version (to check if  it also has this problem) and converted a file to open it... but the beta version has the same issue.

I'm having this issue too. Glad I'm not the only one. It's been driving me crazy. I've reset my preference  3 times now. The undos will work st first then stop at just 3 steps.

Hi Noir,

This appears to be an emergent issue. I am not seeing a solution yet, but you can read many others report about the problem. Here is just one similar discussion within this forum:

Hello @Fasih_5561,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. We are currently checking this with the product team. Could you also share the following information:

For macOS computers:
System Report

- You can generate it from the Apple icon > About This Mac > System Report > Save to the desktop.

For Windows computers:

System Report:

- Please press Windows Key + the letter "R" on your keyboard to bring up the Run command window

- Type "msinfo32" in the Open field and left-click OK

- While viewing the Microsoft System Information summary, go to File, then choose Save (Please do not use Export)

- Save your MSINFO32 report as "msinfo32.nfo" on your desktop to easily locate it after. It can take up to a minute to generate a report.

Kindly upload the files and a screen recording of your exact workflow leading up to the problem to Google Drive/Dropbox/etc, and share a public link here or via DM so that we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I’ve encountered the same issue as well. From what I’ve searched it’s often mentioned that this can be related to RAM or memory management, but it still happens even though I have sufficient RAM and it usually doesn’t occur under normal conditions. It feels like the Undo history clears unexpectedly without any user action, which is quite disruptive to the workflow.

I have the same issue exactly as everyone describe it.

I tried resetting, reinstalling etc. Disabling GPU restart....

December 15, 2025

My collegue and I are having the same issue, both on windows, both with the latest update 21.0.2 (though i noticed it with the previous update too - started last week!)

Have deleted preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled, still same issue 😞

Please help!!!! We have a huge print deadline looming!

Also, I got adobe to look into it on my laptop and unfortunately they were unable to fix it yet and the issue was escalated to their engineers. None of the fixes mentioned in this thread have worked. I am hoping that with enough people with this issue it will get fixed quickly 😞
