InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

How can you say you don't understand?
We pay for programs that must be tested as stable BEFORE being released. We don't care about constant little innovations; we want STABLE programs that work.
Try to speak like professionals, as you should be.
Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.
We're not grumbling, we're angry.

Hi All,

Unfortunately, it seems to me that fixing the bug is not their top priority. There are more important programs like Photoshop and Primer that they work on more, leaving InDesign behind. The bugs that are added from update to update will prove it.

December 22, 2025

You would think that an $800/year program would test core features of their programs before releasing updates...

The problem is that the previous version also has the same problem, and so does the version before it.

Habe soeben das neueste Indesign-Update (21.1) installiert. Die seit einer Woche hier in diesem Thread beschriebenen Fehler existieren nach wie vor!
DANKE FÜR NICHTS, Adobe!!!

It's been more than a week and we still dont have a solution for this.

We are paying a not-so-cheap monthly amount to Adobe, and in my case I ve been unable to work. There is no way on Earth I can work on long files with this bug. I lost two projects this week, meaning Im losing a good amount of money, and Im assuming the situation is same for most people here.

This needs to be fixed now.

I agree with every word. I've had several big book projects fall through because of this damn bug.

I've been using InDesign version 20.0.1 on my desktop and laptop for almost a year. Even though I haven't done any updates, I've been unable to use the rollback history since the beginning of this month. Additionally, a "visual error" has started occurring where text in the text field I'm working on disappears.

I'm using Windows 11 Enterprise version 22H2 on my desktop and Windows 11 version 25H2 on my laptop. I've tried deleting InDesign user preferences on both my computer and laptop, and then individually installing all versions of 2025. Even after installing version 2026, the errors mentioned above persist.

I've also removed both Windows 11 updates from December, but the errors continue. Looking at Adobe's updates, I noticed that Acrobat, which is used across all computers and systems, was updated on December 7, 2025. Could this update be contributing to the errors in InDesign? Are you also aware that this issue has occurred in the past? Often a section of my text disappears when I am editing. I recover by Control Z, but I can only undo once not 25,000 times.  Something is wrong with my History storage.

For those who came upon this older thread now, here's the thread where the current issue with undo reset on Windows is discussed:

Also joining this terrible problem.
From what I understand, there is a Windows update that caused this whole problem. Does anyone know which update to remove for now?

That was one theory, but it's not true - it is happening on Windows 10 as well as 11, and many different versions. And for some of us, it started happening without having recently done any Windows updates. It's clearly something going on with InDesign - Adobe developers are aware of it, so we just need to wait.
