InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

How can you say you don't understand?
We pay for programs that must be tested as stable BEFORE being released. We don't care about constant little innovations; we want STABLE programs that work.
Try to speak like professionals, as you should be.
Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.
We're not grumbling, we're angry.

Hi All,

Thank you for your patience. The team has released a Fix for this issue is now available in the latest InDesign Prerelease build - 21.2.0.27

Maybe a short term fix could be to install an earlier version. Just untill the bug has been fixed. But what version should I go back to?

It does't work

In addition to the problem with the undo stack, text now randomly disappears as I click around documents while editing. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to its cause...sometimes I'm highlighting text, sometimes I'm just clicking on a different part of the document, or who knows what else.  Random actions like scrolling up and down or clicking in and out of the text box will bring it back for a while, but as I continue to work, it will just disappear again. This problem is more of a problem for me and my workflow than the undo bug. I spend hours editing documents each week, and using this program is so infuriating now.

Yes, my team and are experiencing the same thing. It's murder for getting things done.

InDesign 2026 is a nightmare.
The previous version worked like a charm, but now I'm stuck with slow, laggy software.

I have a pretty good machine with plenty of RAM and a good graphics card, but I am experiencing most of the problems described by other users here:

  • GPU performance disabled (Why?? All other Adobe apps detect my card!)
  • Undo states randomly lost
  • Text disappearing when selecting it
  • Software crashes more frequently than ever

Dear Adobe Support/Expert, please stop asking us to send you our system info... it's clear that this is a widespread problem. And stop always answering with the same canned, useless suggestions.

I don’t think the scale of this disaster has sunk in yet.

I agree with Doc.T: another big problem is that InDesign crashes more frequently than ever.
The problem isn't trivial because the file you're working on could be damaged, and we don't know how or where!
A message appears that tersely says something like: "The file may be damaged, and some parts may be missing."

We don't expect this from a professional program!
Because it's not the exception, it's becoming the rule!

Bonjour,

Merci.

Hi Patrick32827351kojh,

Thank you for reaching out. I assume you're experiencing a similar issue reported here: https://adobe.ly/4aQfrG6.

If so, this is a known problem, and the team is working on it. Please stay tuned to the UserVoice page for updates.

Thanks,

Harshika

Merci pour votre retour, apparemment le problème n'est toujours pas résolu.

Bonne journée.

Hello, my team and I work primarily in InDesign. Lately we have all noticed that text randomly disappears while we are editing. It just blinks out and we have to click out and back in, zoom in and out, or perform some other arbitrary action to get it to show up again. This is maddening and a huge blow to productivity (also, sanity). It's not an overset issue. We've installed the latest updates. Please help!

Hi Jubilant Moon,

The usual guess for this situation is to go into InDesign > Preferences > GPU Preferences... and experiment with turning it off or on.

Some report that the screen disappearance issue will go away for them. Others say it has no effect.

Some claim that a reset helps the matter.

Here is a roundup of troubleshooting ideas for InDesign.

Thanks! I've seen that suggestion, but that option is disabled for me:

I finally found something that seems to be working.

Complete uninstall, complete reinstall.
THEN... I created a new workspace.
I selected/grouped panels as I wanted, set all preferences (under Edit) as I wanted
Then saved the new workspace with a new name, checking the boxes for capture to both "Panel Locations" and "Menu Customization".
So far, this is working as it should be.

I'd love to hear how this goes for others.

Hasn't worked for me unfortunately. I've also tried importing user preferences from a machine with 64gb ram that doesn't have this issue.

This is why more and more people are pirating Adobe products or shifted to other options. The pirated versiones have been running way better than the official ones, fixing bugs faster or not even having them.
Lately, Indesign has been a headache for my teamwork and myself due to this and a large number of issues

Same here!
