Information On InDesign Overlays cc 2018

I'm creating a portfolio document in which I want to include some scrollable or pan&zoom photo's.

So I learned about the Overlays on the newer versions of InDesign & downloaded the trial of the current CC version (until now i used a very old version, that just suited my needs very well).

The problem is that i don't manage to create a document that works as it should. Although it looks quite straight forward.

Bigger problem is that I can't figure out why it doesn't work.
I've spend the past 3 days watching tutorials, reading discussions and forums (also here ofcours) but can not seem to find a clear answer.
A lot tutorials date back to 2014-2015 where there are talking about folio overlay, and folio builders, things that I can not find anymore.
And then there are references to Digital Publishing Suite, and that overlays only work there or through there...
But then I can not find up to date info on DPS either...

Though the Overlays are still there...

So is there anybody who can clarify whats the deal with these Overlays and how i could make them work.

I would reali love to create an interactive epub as documentation and promotion of/for my latest projects

Thank You,

h  .

Digital Publishing Suite is dead. Folios and folio overlays are only supported in a highly expensive product for enterprise users. Don't read or view old tutorials. Computer technology changes and evolves quickly.

What kind of output are you trying to do? If you don't want to use EPUB, read about using the Publish Online feature:

So basicly, overlays can not be used bu "normal" users, unless u use the in5 plugin?

or are there other ways  to create these kind of effects (don't have to be exactly the same) in a nice interactive publication?

Almost anything you can do with overlays can be duplicated in an interactive Fixed Layout EPUB and more. You can use native InDesign animations which are not supported at all in DPS/AEM. For scrolling content, this little utility from Ajar will do the trick:

Universal Scrolling Frames | Ajar Productions

I've been exploring the animations in inDesign, with some succes... but i'm not sure it is possible replicating the effect of panning an scrolling in a picture.

(google streetvieuw style/360 picture style, embeded in a bigger publication)

But maybe i'll find an other solution that way.

the Scrolling Frames gives an error while installing I have to have a closer look at the script and/or contact Ajar.

Thank you a lot for all your help.

DPS is a deprecated service that is now only available through AEM Mobile which is an enterprise only (very expensive) service. The overlays work with AEM Mobile only for InDesign versions later than CC2014.

in5, a third party product will let you use the overlays: Export HTML5 from InDesign with in5 - Home

All that out of the way, you can create an interactive fixed layout EPUB using InDesign. You should probably look into that but be aware that reader support right now is a bit spotty but the prospects for better reader apps is looking very good.

The in5 plugin is indeed a (possible) solution!

but it comes with it's own subscription-based-license and that I can't justify for one project (there are no similar publications in the near future)

That was exactly the frustration I had, only finding out-dated information!

So thank you very much for helping to clear this up.

What I don't understand from Adobe 's part is why they keep it still in "regular user" version... if there seems to be very exclusive packs for industries...

I don't have any preference what so ever about the output, i just would like to include panoramic pictures that you don't see as one picture directly, but that you have to drag, scroll, point-and-click...
So I'll study the link closely, hopefully I find some positive answers.

Thank you once again!
