Screen Flickering & Menu not opening Issue on macOS Sonoma

Hello,

I am fieldtesting macOS Sonoma and I encounter a few (very) annoying bugs with the latest Adobe CC apps (all up to date). For Photoshop I have the 2024 version, for all other apps mentioned it's the latest 2023 version of the app.

Bug 1: Adobe Indesign. The page is "flickering" when moving an object with the selection tool. This flickering can be avoided when hiding the "rulers" in Adobe Indesign with  CMD + R

Bug 2: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop (2024 release): When moving a panel to a secondary computerscreen the submenu can no longer be accessed. When moving that panel to the primary computerscreen it works just fine.

Adobe (and I do hope Adobe reads this) … are these Adobe CC related issues, or something Apple has to fix?  For many professionals this will be extremely annoying if this doesn't get fixed. As I mentioned, I am only field testing this at home, … not in a production environment, as I have the policy NOT to upgrade right away. That's why I'm field testing.

Thanks in advance!

Issue not solved in Sonoma 14.3 on my end.

MBP 16" 2023 / M2 Pro / 16 GB Ram

Sonoma 14.3 / Indesign 19.1

15+ years of experience with Indesign

And countless hours with technical support!

Had graphic issues for months (well years...) and decided to start 2024 with a functional InDesign, so I devoted a lot of time to make it work!

Support suggested I upgraded to Sonoma, didn't do it.

Then I was told to revert to Ventura (while waiting for "Apple" to fix the issue). I did, but guess what, that didn't work!

Then, upgraded again to Sonoma as I was told the issue was "solved".

I can assure you it is not!

Ever since switching to an Apple Silicon Mac in 2018, the graphics have been buggy, but there were workarounds in the past... but now, nothing works!

Will be back with more details and description of the bugs when I can find more time, as I'm realllllllly behind work.

Well, this is a disappointing report, @KarineCB. I got my hopes up when I saw the two posts above yours. What exactly are you seeing in InDesign on Sonoma 14.3? Are you still getting the widely-reported flickering and the white boxes? A lot of us are waiting to update and any details you can share will be beneficial.

I do have screen redraw issues on my M1, but with GPU Performance disabled, it goes away completely. Otherwise, it's been business as usual. (Ventura 13.6.2, 64GB RAM)

@Barb Binder ,

My configuration is close to yours (Apple M1 MacBook Pro) running InDesign 19.1. I've had excellent results with Sonoma 14.3. No problems to report.

Hi Everyone,

Please test and confirm if you're still experiencing the issue on macOS 14.3. Feel free to update the discussion if you need further assistance.

Thanks

Unfortunately, unresolved problem with the Sonoma update to 14.3. If InDesign has documents open and I plug in a screen or projector, the document remains open, but it's all gray. I need to quit InDesign and relaunch it. Displaying the rules doesn't change the problem...

Hi @reimlima,

Thanks for reaching out, and I am sorry to hear that you are running into this issue.

Could you please confirm the version of InDesign you're using? Also, it would be great if you could share a bit about your setup. Are you working with a secondary external monitor? If yes, what kind of physical connection are you using (like HDMI or USB Type-C)?

To help rule out system- or user-specific issues, could you also try launching InDesign in Safe Mode and test the issue in a new admin local user account? Reference:

Start up your Mac in safe mode

Set up a new user account

And if you're able to, a short screen recording showing your workflow up to the point where the issue appears would really help us understand what's going on better and pass it along to the team.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek

Today, Monday, January 22  at 10 am Pacific, Apple released the update to macOS Sonoma 14.3.

According to beta testers, this release should solve the display problems in earlier Sonoma versions. The problems did not occur for everyone. I ran Sonoma 14.2 with no problems so I can't verify that this solves the display problems.

If you are running Sonoma, download the update and see whether your problems have been fixed.

The problem should be finally fixed next week with an update to macOS Sonoma 14.3. Apple appears to have finally fixed to bug according to people who are working with the prerelease version.

Agreed! I am in the process of BIG app; translation Eng to Span - I will try the rulers but I USE the rulers at the same time. Old school forms design - it is necessary for my customer. - no auto tables, etc.. These have specifics and placements and form fields and different versions and matching stuff that is just like making a MESS! Hard to follow and easy to screw up. It's slow going now; and it's due Monday - ... the bug showed up today.... just after the latest update. It's required so I won't be changing it or it'll screw up all kinds of OTHER things.... so glad I can stop restarting now LOLOLOLOLOL Happy New Year!

Dec 5th: It's still an Apple bug.

The good news: The Sonoma 14.2 beta reportedly fixes it.

@BobLevine Re "hide rulers" works for now, I thought my document was corrupt intill I started Googling the issue. Hopefully Apple won't take as long to fix this. Going back and forth with show/hide rulers as I USE them as @Pamela32778623xf1m mentioned.

I'm still holding my breath for a functoinal Acrobat Pro desktop app update with scrollbars 😕😕

I have a Macbook Pro M2 Max (38 core GPU, 96GB RAM) running 2 Studio Displays and after installing Sonoma I had the flickering issue. The two fixes mentioned (enabling GPU and hiding the rulers) did not fix the issue. I have since had to re-install Mojave (after running out of space on my 4TB HD - my advice is never to let your Mac do this!) and thankfully no longer have the same issue.

What I do have, is ANOTHER issue which is that more often than not I'm presented with a grey InDesign artboard and no artwork showing when I cancel the screensaver by moving the mouse or pressing the spacebar. The only solution so far is to restart InDesign. This is among many, many bugs on each of the main apps I use - PS/Ill/Indd which I would bore you to death if I began listing. Thankfully, The last iteration of Photoshop had terrible flickering issues when moving objects which has now been resolved with the update.

The sad thing is I have come to expect issues with every Adobe update. As a professional designer who has used Photoshop since version 4 in 1996 and requires seamless and streamlined functionality, it leaves a bitter taste when they don't work as expected. Perhaps my expectations are too high?!? it feels like these apps do not appear to go through rigorous enough testing and are prematurely released. I'm pretty disgruntled tbh!

On a separate note, Apple is also in the doghouse as there are colour discrepancies between the two displays. You'd expect nearly £4000 worth of professional kit to work correctly out of the box. WTF! Rant over.

Hiding is not really an option, as it is pretty much an essential part of adjusting one's layout.  if I want an image to be a specific place in relation to other text blocks, images, guides, etc, you kinda need to know where you are moving them instead of guessing and using trial by error.

So not really a "work around"... and the GPU checkbox does zippo.

I agree. The first note on this chain was September 30, 2023. A month later and no fixes? Not having a ruler is a huge problem, and my GPU is grayed out. I've already spent over an hour with support. We are not paying for "workarounds"; we are paying for this costly subscription to work!

*TWO months later. I don't understand why this post is marked as resolved, as there are no updates or fixes.

Hello @John Beeckaert ,

Thank you for sharing your report.

The page flickering issue has been resolved. It was very helpful as I needed to use it for work.

OK, I updated to Sonoma 14.1 … and again … the submenu's don't't work anymore on a secondary monitor. Adobe assisted me to create a new useraccount  … this fixed the issue. Now … after updating to Sonoma 14.1 … the problem came back. …I am not supposed to create a new user account everytime Apple launches an update right?

At the beginning it was affected on all apps from Adobe, like Photoshop, Illustrator … In Photoshop and Illustrator it works, the submenu … now it only affects Indesign … 2023 AND 2024.
